Vol. 12, Issue - 4, December 2012 The quarter gone by was characterized by unpredict- able change in the environment due to floods in the different states like Bihar, Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, etc. and has caused damage to life, property and crops. In Maharashtra there was mixed type of monsoon this year, some parts received heavy rains specially in the dry region and in some parts there were no rains in month of June-July and after a break of 20-25 days in mid of September again some parts received heavy rains. This change in the monsoon pattern has affected the sugarcane crop yield as well other crops. The change in environment due to varied monsoon pattern is of a great concern. So it is very much im- portant to concentrate on the use of water for the growth of crops. And there is a need to switch over to the use of the drip-irrigation system for the sugar- cane crops. Apart from water problem now a day’s soil health issue is alarming. Over use of water not only leads to wastage but also makes land less pro- ductive. The imbalance use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides has created soil problems like immobiliza- tion of nutrients in soil & salinity. The soil & plant health management is important in improving soil fertility. In this context VSI is creating awareness in the form of training farmers and sugar industry. The institute organized couple of workshops in this quarter like “Oos sheti Dnyanlaxmi and oos sheti Dnyanyag” “Water Conservation and Wastewater Management in Sugar Factory”, “Sugarcane Planting Techniques and Mechanization”, “Biological Soil and Plant Health Management in Sugarcane Agriculture” and “Intercropping in pre-seasonal Sugarcane and their economics” for sugarcane growers. This type of train- ing/workshops has created awareness in sugarcane grow- ers regarding the use of water efficiently, maintain the soil & plant health with the help of intercropping, use of beneficial microorganisms in the form of micronutrients and organic fertilizers. VSI’s multidimensional role has now elaborated to much broader subjects in the field of agriculture, sugar & al- lied industry and this is evident from the companies like Anntone Parr, Flvinocraft and Novoenyme visits to VSI for the future collaboration. Delegates from Tanzanian Sugar Board (TSB), Sudanies Sugar Company and Sudeco Inter- national UK, visited VSI and had discussion regarding development of sugarcane agriculture and industry.
