VAULT 2120 OVERVIEW

VAULT 2120
Vault 2120 is an unprecedented social,
cultural, historical and scientific project to
create a Time Capsule Vault Complex in
South Africa where approximately 4700
individuals, companies, institutions and
even countries will be able to securely
deposit artefacts, documents, art works,
information, music, technologies,
personal/family items, etc. in individual
containers also known as time capsules.
The time capsules are then placed in secure airtight and watertight concrete chambers for a specific
time period – ranging from 5 years to 100 years.
The centerpiece of the Vault complex is a concrete Vault that contains the time capsules, visible in the
architect representation.
Around the concrete vault in the center of the building, there are large open spaces with interactive
stations where visitors can send physical letters, messages, or drawings to the future. They can donate
DNA, watch videos about history, time capsules and the vault and they will be able to send Whatsapp
and text messages to the future that will also be displayed on screens inside the building as they are
uploaded. These messages will also be cached and retained for the next 100 years.

TIME CAPSULES

45cm, 60cm x 45cm x 30 cm)

HALL OF FAME DISPLAY TIME CAPSULES
In addition to the time capsules in the main concrete vault and its various sealed chambers, inside the
complex, along the back wall of the complex, there will be there are 5 display chambers with large
viewing windows. These viewing chambers are also known as Halls of Fame and through their large
windows visitors can observe special display time capsules inside these 5 Hall of Fame Chambers.
The capsules inside the display chambers are large time capsules, constructed from stainless steel, each
with a branded display window through which visitors can get a glimpse of the contents.

STORY-TELLING ON AN UNPRECEDENTED SCALE
In essence, Vault 2120 is a unique story-telling project, on an unprecedented scale. With this project we
are enabling 4700 individuals, institutions, groups and even countries to tell their story in an absolutely
unique way – in the form of the content of a time capsule. We believe that the time we live in, is
significant, and that our stories matter and that they are worth telling to future generations.
The people of the future are not nameless, faceless aliens. They are the flesh and blood of people living,
breathing today and as such have a vested interest in what we leave behind – be it the story of a
grandmother, or a school, or a church, or a company.
With Vault 2120 we will be sending countless stories into the future -- our individual stories and our
collective story, the story of the time we live in now. And we are telling these stories in an
unprecedented manner – with time capsules.
