REC-FITNESS CENTER

WWW.GOLEAFS.NET – 4

Location: Southeast corner of campus, just across the railroad tracks from College Men-nonite Church.Built: 1995

Goshen College student-athletes train and compete in one of the best small college athletic facilities in the nation. The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing col-lege campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basket-ball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete successfully.

The luxury of such a large athletic training facility allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. During their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an ef-ficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically.

In addition to these indoor facilities, Goshen College also boasts some of the finest outdoor playing fields in the nation. The baseball, softball and soccer stadiums all are equipped with automatic, in-ground irrigation systems while the 1,500-seat soccer com-plex is one of the few lighted soccer stadiums at the NAIA level.

2009 SEASON PREVIEW

5 – MAPLE LEAFS VOLLEYBALL

Experienced Roster Ready To Take Next StepFamiliar Roster

Set To Take The Floor In Hopes Of Taking

Program To NewHeights

GOSHEN, Ind. – It has been quite a year for the Goshen College Volleyball program. Nearly one year ago, a much-improved Maple Leaf roster took to the court and pulled off a huge shocker in their season-opener, knocking off NAIA #17 Walsh University at the Cornerstone Classic. An impressive offensive display continued throughout the season as Gos-hen rattled off 20 wins for the 11th time in program history. That was just the side notes, however, as the most important part of the season came after the regular-season schedule was complete. The 2008 Maple Leafs made history by heading to Michigan and taking down Spring Arbor University in four games to reach just their second Mid-Central College Conference Semifinals in team history. Heading into 2009 expectations are even higher. Goshen is returning all but one member of that 2008 squad, includ-ing all but 21 of the team’s 1,426 kills. A preseason knee injury to sophomore standout Katelyn Yoder has set the Leafs back, but the firepower is still plentiful for Goshen’s potent offense. Leading the way once again will be the dynamic one-two punch of junior Peni

Acayo and senior Brittany Herschberger. An NAIA All American Honorable Men-tion selection in 2008, Acayo racked up 420 kills, 76 blocks, and 69 service aces a year ago, while Herschberger – a second team All MCC pick – led the team with 371 digs to go with 216 kills. The Maple Leafs have another versatile option in senior Ashley Janssen – second team All MCC in 2008 – who tallied 263 kills at a 21% clip in 2008. Senior setters Allison Hawkins – within 300 of 2,500 career assists – and Lindsey Nofziger have multiple options to dish out to as they spearhead the Leafs offensive attack. With little transition in the roster, the most significant change comes in a completely new coaching staff. Four-year head coach Jewel Lehman resigned in January to focus on her duties as chair of the physical education department. After a nationwide search, Goshen found their man just down the road. A 22-year veteran at Concord High School, Jim Routhier brings a wealth of experience to the program. He also brings Jen Higley, a former Concord star who became an All American setter at MCC foe Taylor Uni-versity to serve as an assistant coach.

COACHING STAFF

7 – MAPLE LEAFS VOLLEYBALL

Following 22 seasons at the helm of Concord High School (Elkhart, Ind.), Jim Routhier will begin his first season as the head coach of the Maple Leafs in 2009. As the head coach at Concord High School, Routhier compiled an incredible record of 472-179 while leading the Minutemen to four Northern Lakes Conference Championships, two section championships and one Indiana State Elite Eight appearance before retiring from the position two years ago. Also a science teacher and assistant athletic trainer at Concord, Routhier received several phone calls from friends notifying him the position was open and that he should consider applying. Routhier is a three-time Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) Coach of the Year. Routhier also was a recipient of the NLC Service Award for his work as a coach and in starting Concord’s Athletic Training Program. Obviously no stranger to the local volleyball scene, Routhier also has experience with the college game. As a high school coach, Routhier has sent more than 50 of his former players on to play college ball at all levels, including the likes of Ohio State and Indiana. A former college player himself, Routhier played under volleyball icon Don Shondell at Ball State University.

A former high school player under Routhier, Jen Higley begins her first season on the Maple Leafs sideline this fall. A three-time all conference setter at Concord, Higley helped her Minuteman team to the state quarterfinals. She then went on to be a two-time all conference selection, two-time all region, and two-time NAIA All American at MCC foe Taylor University and graduated in 2000 with a degree in elementary education. While at Taylor, Higley posted the single-season record for assists with 2,037 in 2002 and finished her career ranked third on the program’s all-time assists list with 5,122. Following her playing days at Taylor, Higley served one year as a student assistant for the Trojans. She has coached a variety of high school and club programs including the Shank You Volleyball Club, Momentum, and Terra Houte High School.
