Francis Marion University 2013 Volleyball

FMU is named in honor of South Carolina’s Revolution-ary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nick-named the “Swamp Fox,” for using the terrain to out-foxthe British. Located about seven miles east of Florence,in the beautiful northeast section of South Carolina, the400-acre campus is about 90 miles from the state capitalof Columbia, 60 miles from the shores of Myrtle Beach,and 180 miles from the mountains of the Carolinas.

Francis Marion University placed89 student athletes, includingseven volleyball players, on last year’s

Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), nearly half of all our student athletes. FMU also placed eight vb student-athletes on

own fall and spring Swamp Fox Athletic- Academic Honor Roll.

Paul MacDonald - FMU Volleyball CoachPaul MacDonald, 40, is entering his eighth year as the head coach for the Francis Marion University

women's volleyball program. He owns an 167-153 career coaching mark in ten seasons, including a 118-104 record in his seven years at Francis Marion, during which his teams have produced eight All-Conferenceselections.

Last season MacDonald guided a relatively young Patriot squad to an 18-12 overall record, its bestmark in four seasons. The Patriots earned a fourth-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference standings andnarrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Four team members alsoearned PBC All-Academic Team recognition.

In 2011, the Patriots finished with a 12-18 record. Six team members earned PBC All-AcademicTeam recognition. Francis Marion earned an AVCA Team Academic Award (for the third straight year) -- one

of only three PBC schools to gain that honor for 2011. In 2010, FMU posted a 15-16 mark with a pair of Patriots earning All-Conferencehonors and two gaining PBC All-Academic recognition. The Patriot squad earned an AVCA Team Academic Award -- one of only four PBCschools to gain that honor for 2010. In 2008, MacDonald earned PBC "Coach of the Year" honors while guiding the Patriots to a 23-9record and the program's third-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament invitation. FMU placed second during the PBC regular-season and advanced to the title match of the PBC Tournament. In 2007, FMU was 13-21 and placed fourth during the Peach Belt regularseason. In a very successful first campaign (2006), MacDonald guided the Patriots to a 26-8record and a share of the conference regular-season championship.

MacDonald came to FMU from Mount Mercy College, an NAIA school in Cedar Rapids,Iowa. In three seasons with the Mustangs, he compiled a 49-49 record, including a 25-11mark in 2005 - the team's best record in more than a decade. Utilizing a roster that did notinclude any seniors, he also guided Mount Mercy to a second-place finish in the MidwestClassic Conference with a 6-1 record and to a spot in the NAIA Region VII Tournament for thefirst time since 2002. For that effort, he received conference "Coach of the Year" honors.

A native of Flat Rock, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, MacDonald earned a B.A. degree inbusiness from Michigan State University and an M.Ed. degree in physical education fromWayne State University. He earned CAP I certification through the USA Volleyball Coaches'Accreditation Program in 2007.

Prior to accepting the position at Mount Mercy, he was an assistant coach at Division IIWayne State for the 2002 season, an assistant coach at Macomb County Community Collegefor the 2001 campaign, and was an assistant and interim head coach during the 1999season at Division I Oakland University. He spent five years (2004-2008) with the USANational Olympic Development Program, and has five years of experience coaching at thehigh school level - including winning a district championship at Regina High School in HarperWoods, Mich. - and seven years of experience coaching at the Junior Olympics and club level.His Junior Olympic squads placed first in the state of Michigan in 1998 and third in 2002.

He is a member of the United States Volleyball Association and the American VolleyballCoaches Association. He has worked camps at the universities of Iowa, Michigan, andWisconsin; Michigan State University; Stanford University, Purdue University; Eastern Michi-gan University; Mount Mercy; and at high schools in Michigan. He was a coach for the 2006USA High Performance A2 Camp in Charlotte, N.C., the 2007 USA High Performance A2Camp in Davidson, N.C., and the 2008 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Baltimore, Md.

He now directs the FMU Patriot Volleyball Summer Camp programs and the FlorenceJuniors Volleyball Club.

MacDonald was married in the summer of 2012.

Carly Swisher - FMU Volleyball Assistant Coach

Carly Swisher is entering her second year on the Francis Marion University volleyball staff.

In her first season at FMU, the relatively young Patriot squad finished with an 18-12 overall record,its best mark in four seasons. The Patriots earned a fourth-place finish in the Peach Belt Confer-ence standings and narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.Four team members also earned PBC All-Academic Team recognition.

She is a 2012 graduate of Carson-Newman College, where she earned a B.S. degree in biologywith a pre-physical therapy concentrate. A native of Fort Collins, Colo., she was a three-yearstarter on the Carson-Newman volleyball team and registered more than 1,000 career kills.

She was named to the 2008 South Atlantic Conference All-Freshmen Team. Three times during her career, she was namedto the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for her work in the classroom. In the final 2009 NCAA Division II national stats, sheranked among the Top 25 for service aces per set. She recorded a single-match career-high of 21 kills twice during timeplaying for the Eagles.

She attended Tusculum College as a freshman.

She served as an office assistant for the Carson-Newman volleyball program in 2011, and has worked summer camps duringeach of the past four years.

FMU 2013 Volleyball Outlook

The Francis Marion University volleyball team will begin its 2013 campaign by hosting its annual FMU InvitationalTournament, Friday and Saturday (Sept. 6-7) in the Smith University Center. The six-team event will feature playon Friday between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., and on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Admission is free.

On Friday, Francis Marion will play Mars Hill College at 4 p.m. and Lees-McRae College at 8 p.m. The Patriots willthen play a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon: Newberry College at 11 a.m. and Mount Olive College at 3 p.m.

Eighth-year head coach Paul MacDonald welcomes back 10 letterwinners, including five starters, from last year’s18-12 squad that narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The season markwas the best in four years and the Patriots tied for fourth place during the Peach Belt Conference regular season.

Returning starters include 6-1 senior middle blocker Megan Mooney, 5-11 senior hitter Jessica Imbimbo, 5-10senior setter Kailey Smith, 6-0 junior middleblocker Alex Matz, and 5-9 sophomore outside hitter Alexzandra Reed.Junior Rebekah Davis also returns at the libero position.

Other returnees include 5-10 senior outside hitter Paige Perreault, who started 13 matches last year; 5-10 seniorhitter Shelby Jones; 6-0 junior setter Sloane Shank; and 5-4 sophomore defensive specialist Brianna West.

The Patriots also welcome in three newcomers: junior 5-11 outside hitter Emily Sears, who transfers from theUniversity of Southern Mississippi where she played two seasons; freshman 6-2 middleblocker Carolina Boonefrom Roanoke, Va.,; and freshman 6-1 outside hitter and middleblocker Carlie Smith from Hampstead, N.C.

Three of the returnees – Mooney, Perreault, and Shank – earned PBC All-Academic Team recognition last season.

The Patriots’ 2013 schedule includes 16 home dates among the squad’s 29 matches. FMU will also serve as thehost for the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Tournament, Nov. 22-24 in the Smith University Center.

SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTERNamed in honor of the university’s first president, Dr.Walter D. Smith, the Smith University Center providescomprehensive facilities for student services and activi-ties as well as for recreation and athletic programs toserve students, faculty, and staff. Opened in 1974, thecenter’s gymnasium seats 2,547 for volleyball/basketballand has recently undergone several renovation projects.Improvements include new theatre-style seating on theeast side, a hardwood floor, new scoreboards, a newlighting system, a new sound system, and a new paint job.

The FMU women’s volleyball team owns a 350-193 (.645)record in the Smith University Center, including a 10-4record last year and a 14-1 mark in 2008. Between 1995 and 1997, the squad won 30 consecutive home matches,and between 1995 and 2000, won 54 of 56 home contests (including undefeated home seasons in 1996 and 1998).

In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises.Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament. FMU hosted AIAWregional volleyball tournaments in 1978 and 1981 and the Peach Belt Conference volleyball tournament in 1992,1993, 1998, and 2006.

2011 FMU Team: Front Row (L-R): Drewry, Crook, Mooney, Parker, Mitchell, Perreault; Back Row (L-R):Sasan, Legg, Peji, Shank, Matz, Porter, Bennett........For the third consecutive year, the Francis MarionUniversity volleyball program has earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Aca-demic Award, this time for the 2011-12 year. The 13-member Patriot squad recorded a 3.359 GPA for this pastacademic year. The AVCA honored a record 535 programs – men’s and women’s teams nationwide from highschool through all levels of college participation. Francis Marion was one of three Peach Belt Conferencemembers recognized and one of only six Palmetto State schools honored (two in NCAA Divisions I and four inDivision II). The award, which was initiated in 1993, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams thatdisplayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative teamgrade point average on a 4.0 scale.
