National Statistics Day at Economics Dept

A one day seminar on 'Quality Assurance in

Official Statistics' was held in the Department

of Economics on 29 June to celebrate 'National

Statistics Day ' to mark the birth anniversary of

the renowned statistician, Prof P C

    Mahalanobis. The Government of India

    acknowledged his outstanding contribution in

    2007.

P C Mahalanobis was an eminent statistician

best known for founding the Indian Statistical

Institute (ISI) in 1932. Dr Mahalanobis made

several contributions to the field of statistics,

    including the Mahalanobis Distance, a

statistical measure. He was also a pioneer in

the field of anthropometry, the study of human

measurements, in India, and helped design

large scale sample surveys and sampling

    methods. He developed the Feldman-

Mahalanobis Model, a Neo-Marxian model of

    economic development, which was employed

in the Second Five Year Plan of India.

A man of diverse scientific interests,

    Mahalanobis combined statistics with other

    emerging disciplines, including anthropology,

physics and economics to develop novel

    approaches for estimating population

    distribution, crop yields and household

consumption. Based on his approach, National

Sample Survey has conducted more than 70

    rounds of surveys since independence,

providing the much needed data about

    household consumption, social inequality,

    educational attainment and health care

outcomes. NSS data serves as the backbone to

    Indian economic planning, public welfare

    provision and academic research.

The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice

    Chancellor, Prof Ramesh Sharan.
