Page 3: VCCF Annual Report 2002

When we launched the Ventura County Community Foundation 15

years ago, we opened doors of opportunity to many residents –

those seeking to give resources to help their fellow citizens as

well as those needing funding and education to improve the quality of life in

our community.

Over the years, we’ve built 15 Doors of Opportunity to better serve the

residents of Ventura County. Those include Destino 2000: The Hispanic

Legacy Fund, which builds a permanent source of funds to address the

needs of underserved Hispanic youths and families in a focused and

strategic fashion. The Women’s Legacy Fund provides grants to organiza-

tions focused on local women’s issues. Our Resource Center for Nonprofit

Management offers comprehensive education to nonprofits and their staff

and volunteers. Other funds promote a cleaner environment, meet our

community’s greatest needs and provide scholarships to students so they

can walk across the threshold of success.

Each year, the level of giving through the Ventura County Community

Foundation grows, allowing us to open more doors of opportunity to area

residents. And we couldn’t do it without our donors, volunteers and nonprofit

organizations, all of whom we thank and salute for their accomplishments.

While we have surpassed many of our goals, there are still many more

opportunities to make our community an even better place to live. Each year

donors create new funds, more organizations choose to keep their

endowments safe with us and more individuals benefit firsthand from the

generosity in our community.

The Community Foundation has opened the door, and I invite you to take a

look inside at the good we do. I think you’ll be proud of all you have helped

to accomplish.

It’s a time of celebration and dedication. It’s all for good. For ever.

“What sets the Community Foundation

apart is its efforts to develop leader-

ship in the community. Leadership

development is one of our greatest

challenges and the area for our

greatest reward. The Community

Foundation is a leadership model. It’s

manifested in how it trains people, in

its responsible administration of

funds and in bringing the community

together to solve problems. The

Community Foundation is developing

a network of leaders to create a vision

for the future of Ventura County.”

–Pierre Tada,

President and CEO, Limoneira Company

and Community Foundation Volunteer

V O L U N T E E R A D V I S O R S / C O M M I T T E E SCommunity involvement is at the core of the Community Foundation. In fiscal year

2002, more than 200 volunteer advisors gave their time and expertise to our county

through the Community Foundation. Their specific knowledge and technical information

increase the quality of our grants and programs and help us identify other Doors of

Opportunity to create and open.

“I feel that the Foundation’s greatest

accomplishment and the thing that

gives me the most satisfaction is the

tremendous legacy we’re leaving in

endowed dollars. We make it easy for

donors to create a personal legacy.

What started so small 15 years ago is

now going to be a part of this county in

perpetuity. It’s staggering to think how

much great work has been done and

how much will be done in the future.”

Donor Advised Funds open the door

to charitable giving. A donor can make

a contribution in one fiscal year and

suggest grants for many years to come.

Anyone may establish a Donor

Advised Endowment Fund with a

minimum gift of $10,000. The donor

selects a name for the fund, may build

on the fund at any time, takes a tax

deduction at the time the fund is

established (or carries the deduction

forward over the next five years, if

necessary) and can recommend

disbursements for charitable purposes

of all of the eligible earnings of the fund

or the principal in a Pass-Through Fund.

Grants must be a minimum of $250.

To ensure confidentiality of the

donor, no public listing of grants from

these named funds will be made by the

Community Foundation without donor

approval. Grantees, however, will be

notified of the donor’s recommendations

unless otherwise requested.

ITY “Our county is unique in that we have

10 distinct communities with no point

of central leadership. It’s a diversified

county, making it difficult to fundraise

and challenging for organizations to

serve the community as a whole. This is

where the Community Foundation

serves as an expert convener, allowing

different communities to come together

to solve countywide issues.”

“It has been personally satisfying for me

when we have helped donors reach their

philanthropic goals. It provides even

greater satisfaction when we have helped

them feel the joy of giving during their

lifetime. Several years ago, we helped

Cynthia Fairburn structure her estate to

provide a substantial planned gift as an

educational endowment in the name of

her and her late husband, William

Fairburn. To help her feel the joy of giving

while still living we suggested she

provide an annual scholarship. Cynthia

“The Community Foundation is doing

a tremendous job of reaching out to

grassroots organizations and trying to

remove barriers to health care and

human services. Because there is a

limited amount of charitable funding

available, the Foundation is helping to

bring people together so that financial

By providing flexible dollars that can be

S C H O L A R S H I P F U N D SThe Community Foundation’s scholarship program opens doors of educational

opportunity for students of all ages. By educating individuals, the entire community is

strengthened. The Community Foundation links donors with financial resources to

students with potential for future achievement. A scholarship is more than a financial

award—it is the key that unlocks the future for our youth by building their confidence.

Many recipients write that they deeply appreciate the faith this shows in their abilities.

For many students, it confirms their potential and is an important building block

toward success.

“When I think of the Community

Foundation, I’m struck by how inventive

the philanthropy has been. Programs like

the Women’s Legacy Fund and Destino

2000 really set people on their ear. By

making philanthropy so accessible, we

inspired a number of first-time donors

who have really learned how great it feels

to give back. As for me, I’ve always gotten

14“The Community Foundation is well

known in certain circles but not by the

general public. In the last year, we

have made great strides toward

communicating our messages. We are

trying to let people know what the

Community Foundation is, what it

does and what it can be if we all work

together. The Community Foundation has

the opportunity to be the catalyst that

brings together the diverse communities

of Ventura County and help them to work

together as one entity.”

15“Graham Greene notes, ‘There is always

one moment in time when the door

opens and lets the future in.’ It has been

a special privilege to be part of the

Foundation during its first 15 years

and to help build an organization with

such strong values of involving the

community in building a better future.

VCCF donors, volunteers, and staf f

have used more than one moment to

open doors of opportunity for every

interest and charitable cause in Ventura

County. I have no doubt that VCCF will

continue to ‘seize the moment,’ open the

door and help shape a better future for

all of our county’s residents.”
