ISU VDL Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to provide comprehensive and cutting edge diagnostic services to veterinarians, producers, and animal owners in Iowa and nationally. The lab is responsible for delivering accessible, timely, accurate, valid, and consistent test results to aid in the protection of animal and human health. Other services include a wide range of surveillance testing for early detection and identification of foreign animal and emerging domestic disease agents, as well as acts of bioterrorism directed at human and livestock populations and agricultural food supplies. The VDL also provides educational opportunities to professional and graduate students, as well as local, national and international scientists, diagnosticians and practitioners. Research is an important component of the tripartite mission as faculty and staff develop state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and techniques and also direct studies which provide new insights and deeper understanding of pathogenesis, transmission, and immunomodulation of infectious diseases.

Our Tripartite Mission

• Provide comprehensive and cutting edge diagnostic services • Deliver accessible, timely, accurate, valid and consistent test results • Provide educational opportunities to professional and graduate students, scientists, diagnosticians

and practitioners

CYCADS - New VDL Section Formed CYCADS - Cyclone Custom Analyte Detection Service The CYCADS section of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Iowa State University is composed of a board-certified clinical pharmacologist and toxicologists supported by analytical chemists. The group is centered around a laboratory facility with a focus on high throughput analyses intended to quantify exogenous and endogenous compounds (e.g. drugs, toxins and biomarkers) in organic matrices. It provides analytical services in support of multiple sample, known analyte, pharmacological and toxicological research for academic, industry, and government entities. CYCADS has rigorous and robust procedures in place to deal with regulatory scrutiny and has a vast array of developed and validated analytical methods focused on pharmacology.

• 80 existing extraction methods • 250 analyte detection methods • 150 validated immunoassays

Points of Pride 1. The first unit within a Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to offer confirmatory drug residue testing

for practitioners. 2. The first unit within a Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to offer analytical support for

pharmacology researchers. 3. The first lab to do anabolic steroid testing in horses in the USA. 4. The only US lab that offers steroid profiling by GC/MS. 5. The lab has an assay that can screen for 300 + compounds in a single run. 6. The only lab with a resident board-certified veterinary clinical pharmacologist on staff. 7. Five staff members each with over 20 years racing lab experience. 8. The lab is large enough to offer complete testing capabilities, small enough to offer individualized

customer service to the client.

Dr. Hans Coetzee Dr. Coetzee serves as Section, where he oversees operation of the Racing Chemistry laboratory, conducts pharmacokinetic services and research, and will initiate new services such as antimicrobial residue testing. Dr. Coetzee also teaches clinical pharmacology related topics in the veterinary and graduate curriculum and collaborates on animal welfare-related research and outreach activities in FSVM. Dr. Coetzee earned his veterinary degree from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. After practicing veterinary medicine for several years in Northern Ireland. Dr. Coetzee worked in the private pharmaceutical industry for 2 years before coming to Iowa State University to pursue a PhD in Veterinary Microbiology. He completed his PhD in 2005 and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology in 2006. Since 2005, Dr. Coetzee has been on the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University (KSU) where he was promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure in 2010. At KSU, Dr. Coetzee directed a research program focused on discovery of biomarkers of pain and distress and the development of novel pain treatment regimens. Over the past 3 years, Dr. Coetzee has received a substantial amount of competitive funding for his research from the USDA NRI Animal Well Being program and from the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Coetzee has also demonstrated entrepreneurial success by establishing Pharmacological Clinical and AnalyTical Services Laboratory (PharmCATS) at KSU. This innovative service unit performs contract pharmacological and toxicological studies and provides assay development. Dr. Coetzee has authored or co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 2 book chapters in the area of clinical pharmacology, food animal production medicine and welfare.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles

• Note: The susceptibility information presented below is a summary of data gathered at ISU VDL for the time period listed. The information may be useful to understand susceptibility trends or as an aid in making clinical decisions, but may not be accurate for specific disease situations.

• In vitro antimicrobial test results do not represent therapeutic recommendations from the VDL or personnel therein. Extra/Off label usage of an

antimicrobial which is limited/prohibited for certain species may result in legal action by FDA-CVM

• Data is reported as: % susceptible (# isolates tested) – not all bacteria isolated at ISU VDL have been tested for antimicrobial susceptibility

2 See Salmonella serotype table on page 18 for most common serotypes isolated within each group 4 A result of <=2 ug/ml for Carbadox is a conservative indicator of bacterial inhibition by this antimicrobial agent. The result shown is based on pharmacokinetic research

indicating an average Carbadox level of 4.5 mcg/ml in the small intestine of pigs fed a dose rate of 50 g/ton. (De Graff 1988).

Key:

1 Data is reported as: % susceptible (# isolates tested) – not all bacteria isolated at ISU VDL have been tested for antimicrobial susceptibility 2 See Salmonella serotype table on page 18 for most common serotypes isolated within each group

3 Isolates resistant to oxacillin are interpreted as potentially methicillin resistant. 4 A result of <=2 ug/ml for Carbadox is a conservative indicator of bacterial inhibition by this antimicrobial agent. The result shown is based on pharmacokinetic

research indicating an average Carbadox level of 4.5 mcg/ml in the small intestine of pigs fed a dose rate of 50 g/ton. (De Graff 1988). 5 Multidrug resistant isolates were found resistant to most classes of antimicrobial in the 1st round of testing. This table represents additional Disk Diffusion
