What is Vedic Mathematics?

▪ Vedic mathematics is a system of mathematics consisting of a list of 16 basic sūtras, or aphorisms. They were presented by a Hindu scholar and mathematician, Bharati Krishna TirthajiMaharaja, during the early part of the 20th century.

▪ The calculation strategies provided by Vedic mathematics are said to be creative and useful, and can be applied in a number of ways to calculation methods in arithmetic and algebra, most notably within the education system.

Multiplication by 5

▪ 2x5=10

▪ 4x5=20

▪ 6x5=30

As you can notice there is a pattern. Every even number multiplied by 5 the product will be its half with a 0.

2x5=10 4x5=20

6x5=30

Multiplication by 15

▪ Multiplication by 15 is rather different but very simple.

▪ 2x15=30

▪ 4x15=60

▪ 6x15=90

An easier way of doing this process is by getting the half of the first digit and adding to it. And then multiply it by 10.

Examples

2x15=30

The half of two is one. So, you add 2+1 and then multiply it by ten, and that’s your answer!

2+1=3

3x10=30

So:

3x10=2x15

▪ The same applies for the other problems.

22x15=?

1. Find the half of 22, which is 11.

2. Add it to the original digit. (22+11=33)

3. Multiply by ten. (33x10=330)

You can do even more complicated problems using this method without using a calculator.

Subtraction ▪ It’s tedious when you have to subtract from huge numbers,

but we also have a method for this. Let’s say with have this problem:

▪ 10,000-1049=?

First convert 100,000 to 99,9910 and you subtract.

▪ Thanks for your attention. Hope this is useful. As usual, feel free to leave your comment.
