Hello friends, and welcome to the bi-annual Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) newsletter. It is hard to believe another year has flown by here in the GSA, but we are excited to share with you all that we have accomplished in the last few months, along with everything we have planned for the upcoming convention in Las Vegas! We begin this issue with a sneak peak of the GSA scheduled events at the conference that you won’t want to miss. Next, we will report on the status of some of our major projects we implemented over this past year. Lastly, we will take some time to recognize our member’s accomplishments, including any awards, publications, or presentations they received recently! Oh, and by the way, if you haven’t bought yourself some GSA SWAG yet and find yourself desperately wanting some, we provide all of the information you need to know in order to secure your GSA merchandise so you can show it off in Vegas! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful GSA officers and volunteers for their dedication and hard work over this last year. Without their enthusiasm for the GSA and AECT, none of the things we do would be possible. Roughly, we had over 25 extremely active members this past year, producing GSA webinars, supporting our social media presence, developing and facilitating sessions for the upcoming conference, and supporting member initiated projects like a virtual writing group and the development of a micro-learning module. It’s been great getting to know each and everyone of you, and your commitment to the GSA is truly inspiring! If the projects and activities we have are of interest to you, or you are interested in finding out more about what we do in the GSA, please don’t hesitate to reach out! We have a fantastic community of graduate students, and we look forward to having you get involved. See you in Vegas! Each year, the AECT Internship program identifies emerging leaders in both AECT and the field of educational communications and technology. The program was recently renamed as the Addie Kinsinger Internship Program to recognize Dr. Kinsinger’s vast contributions to AECT.

Three GSA members were selected as interns this year:

Kiran Budhrani (Lee W. Cochran Intern) is a doctoral candidate and Instructional Designer at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her research is in the area of design epistemology, specifically examining course design knowledge and practice among STEM faculty-designers through visual blueprints. Her research interest extends into exploring online teaching competencies and learning innovation in international settings. Kiran resided in the Philippines prior to 2014, where she was an assistant professor for the Instructional Systems Technology at De La Salle University-Manila. Kiran joined AECT in 2016 as a student volunteer. The following years, she served as D&D Representative (2017-2018) and GSA Communications Officer (2018-2019). Kiran will serve as the GSA President for 2019-2020.

Lauren Bagdy (Lee W. Cochran Intern) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies program at Florida State University. Her research interests include informal learning, learning in online social networks, and open educational resources. Lauren has been a member of AECT for three years. She was a student volunteer at her first annual conference in 2016 and started presenting her research at annual conferences in 2017. She is an active member of two divisions: GSA and Technology Integrated Learning (TIL). She will serve TIL as the Communications Officer for 2019-2020.

Nate Turcotte (Earl F. Strohbhen Intern) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Learning, Design, and Technology program at The Pennsylvania State University. His research explores teaching and learning across formal and informal settings. Currently, his research focuses on how golf instructors and students effectively incorporate data to support their practice. With this, Nate is particularly interested in how personal data can be embodied and felt by the golf instructors and students. Nate's involvement with AECT can be traced back to his first conference in 2014. Since then, he has had multiple presentations at the annual conference, and has been an active member of the GSA, serving in multiple roles.

GSA Webinars on “Hot Topics” By: Bret Staudt Willet

Snapshot: The GSA Webinars initiative is guided by co-team-leaders Bret Staudt Willet (Michigan State University) and Pauline Muljana (Old Dominion University). The team has also benefited greatly from strategic input from GSA President Nate Turcotte (Penn State University) and the artistic talents of Okan Arslan (Texas Tech University). One of the lasting contributions of the 2019 webinar series was the mobilization and involvement of numerous members of the AECT community. First, additional GSA members assisted Bret in hosting and moderating the webinars: Nicole Wang, Sonia Tiwari, and Daniel Agbaji. Also, 19 scholars donated their time and expertise as guest panelists for these webinars: Ali Carr-Chellman, Andrew Tawfik, Briju Thankachan, Enilda Romero-Hall, Gabriella Richard, Jeff Carpenter, Jennifer Weible, Jill Stefaniak, John Curry, Michael Grant, Rebecca Reese, Silvia Rogers, Tian Luo, Tonia Dousay, Tutaleni Asino, Ty Hollett, Will Ashley, Xiaoxue Wang, and Xun Ge. It has been such a pleasure to work with and learn from these experts.

Goal: The goal of our team was to host a monthly webinar in partnership with other AECT divisions. Presentations drew on expertise from across AECT's broad pool of scholars and were planned to be of interest to graduate students, practitioners, and faculty alike. In total, GSA hosted six webinars in 2019. Links to recordings of each webinar are included below.

Inspiring Graduate Students Through Social Media By: Yam Chaivist

Dear GSA Members,

We want to inspire and cheer you on during your graduate journey! Our team, Kae, Noah, Rachel, and Yam, are doing our best to support you to enjoy your journey as we grow together. We keep you updated on GSA events and activities from AECT on our social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We regularly post content that support you to reach your full potential and live a healthy lifestyle as a graduate student. For example, we provide articles about mental health, classroom pedagogy and innovation, building your CV, survival tips, and research. Additionally, we highlight our GSA members in the spotlight campaign, so we can learn more about each other.

As indicated by the data above, our social media outreach is growing. We are proud to report that our content is reaching across the United States and has a growing presence all over the world. At the 2019 AECT International Convention, our social media team is partnering with Nicole from the international division to present an inspired! session called Growing Together with Social Media: AECT GSA Across Borders. We would like to expand our social media to connect with graduate students in other countries so that we can inspire each other and grow together. :)
