Big machines, big blind-spots, big problems. Vehicle and site worker safety is of paramount importance on mining, quarry and construction sites. The sheer size and weight of vehicles and mobile plant equipment pose a very real danger to site workers if safety measures and precautions are not adhered to. According to the Health and Safety Executive, 40% of fatal accidents on quarry sites involve moving vehicles.

Visibility is often limited due to blind spots around machines and this is often made worse by thick dust and dirt, poor weather and night time conditions.

According to Caterpillar, 70% of haulage truck accidents at mines occur during initial machine start-up and low speed movement because of poor visibility.

Site workers may also be wearing ear defenders, limiting their ability to hear machines approaching, which increases the danger of a collision.

Incidents and problems in the industry include;

Reversing accidents due to rear blind spot or driving operator position.

Collisions due to blind spots (rear, front, side)

Collisions due to poor visibility (darkness, fog, dust, smoke)

Site workers being struck by vehicles and mobile machines

Hearing defenders reducing site workers’ ability to clearly hear approaching vehicles and old style tonal reversing alarms

Old style tonal alarms being ignored by site workers used to hearing alarms outside the danger zone and/or tuning out the pervasive sound due to habituation.

Noise nuisance complaints – mainly about old style tonal reversing alarms – from local residents

Theft of cab equipment and driver aids

Camera monitor systems Range of robust camera monitor systems for all-round visibility of blind spots.

• Monitors with single, split, triple, quad and picture-in-picture screen options

• Up to four camera inputs

• Up to five trigger inputs (reverse gear, indicators, speed switch etc)

• Water and dust resistant cameras and monitors (to IP69K)

• Shutter camera options to prevent lens from becoming dirty

• Certified to ISO 13766:2006 standard for earth moving equipment

• Infra-red LEDs for ultra-low light performance

TTTTTThhhhhhheeeeeerrrrrrrmmmmmaaaaallllllll iiiiiiiimmmmmaaaaaagggggggggiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnggggggggggThermal imaging camera detects differences in temperature, enabling drivers to see in poor visibility or total darkness.

• The increased vision overcomes potential blind spots caused by the blanket of darkness, improving reaction times allowing the operator to assess the situation quickly

• Can see through; dust, smoke, light fog, moderate rain and snow

• Enables operators to see objects and pedestrians up to 800 metres away

• Rugged design meets stringent standards for durability and water resistance

White sound reversing alarms The innate locatability and alerting nature of white sound makes this the safest reversing alarm on the market – and unique to Brigade.

• NEW – Self adjusting white sound reversing alarms are ideal in varying noise environments. The sound adjusts to 5dB above the ambient

• Directional, concentrating the warning within the danger zone

• Localised sound eliminates habituation and environmental noise nuisance problems

• Instantly locatable sound

• Emit a broad spectrum of sound frequencies which will more effectively penetrate ear defenders

• LIFETIME warranty

Pulsed radar detection system Designed to detect stationary and moving people or objects in blind spots, providing the driver with a graduated in-cab audible and visual warning.

• Suitable for both on-road and off-road applications with up to 10m range

• Works effectively in harsh environments and in poor visibility (darkness, smoke, fog)

• Heavy duty version is designed to SAE J1455 specification, the recommended environmental practice for electronic equipment in heavy duty vehicle applications

• Effective through non metallic objects – can fit behind plastic or glass fibre body work

• Can be programmed to ignore fixed objects, bodywork and attachments

White sound reversing alarms Pulsed radar obstacle detection

Loading shovels and other similar machines used in quarry environments often have blind spots which can be hazardous when a vehicle is manoeuvring. Camera monitor systems can eliminate blind spots to a large extent but when working in conditions with poor visibility such as thick dust or night time conditions, the driver may be unable to see objects in his danger zone.

Tarmac Limited, producers of over 76 million tonnes of aggregate per year, take health and safety very seriously. To combat the blind spot problem they fitted Brigade’s Backsense to 15 of their loading shovels.

The pulsed radar system detects people and objects in the danger zone, providing the driver with a visual and audible warning in the cab.

Detection zones are programmable on heavy duty models via a remote service tool and can be set to ignore fixed objects, bodywork and attachments that are in the detection zone. Multiple sensors can be networked together to provide the greatest area of coverage.

bbs-tek® enables quiet construction When construction began on the Port of Houston Bayport Terminal the noise pollution was disturbing local residents. The biggest cause for complaint was the loud and constant beeping of reversing alarms.

Reversing alarms are a vital and necessary reversing safety aid, however conventional reversing alarms are fraught with noise and safety issues, especially when used out of normal working hours. Excessive exposure to a conventional beeping alarm can cause site workers to become desensitised and ignore warnings. The high pitched beeping can cause annoyance, fatigue and long term hearing loss, with multiple alarms causing disorientation.

A period of extensive product testing commenced before it was decided to fit white sound reversing alarms to all machinery working on the Port. The investment proved successful as noise related complaints from the Bayport Area fell dramatically, whilst worker safety improved.

The white sound bbs-tek® alarms emit a unique “ssh ssh” sound using multi frequencies. It is instantly locatable, so site workers and pedestrians are immediately aware of which vehicle is reversing and where it is coming from. It is directional, concentrating the sound in the danger area, reducing noise nuisance. White sound dissipates more quickly beyond the danger zone, so it is less of a noise nuisance to local residents and is less likely to be ignored by workers due to overexposure.

“bbs-tek is significantly less intrusive in surrounding environments than narrowband back-up alarms. Our testing and analysis confirm that bbs-tek provides a superior warning for those in the danger area. It is more easily located and less likely to experience interference from reflecting surfaces than narrowband back-up alarms.”

Les Blomberg, Director of Noise Pollution Clearinghouse
