M Y G R A N D F A T H E R U S E D T O S A Y T H A T “ I Fit ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I think that when considering doing an adaptation of any work, one must recognize and understand the strengths of the original. This is especially true with The Velveteen Rabbit. It’s a classic that’s been around for years. An audience of any age will have expectations. Therefore, for this adaptation, I have chosen to remain as true to the original as possible. The Velveteen Rabbit is a story, and I have chosen to tell it as story theatre, blending the text and the medium of theatre into one. The script was originally commissioned in 1988 by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, while I was acting as their Director of Education. HTY’s then-Artistic Director John Kauffman was dissatisfied with many of the other adaptations that existed and recognizing my interests in playwriting, asked me to create something “sweet and magical.” I’ve been surprised at the long legs that this text has subsequently enjoyed. It has since been produced at many of the major children’s theatres around the country; in fact one theatre has produced it annually for almost 20 years. Sadly, John Kauffman passed away soon after The Velveteen Rabbitt premiered—an early casualty of the first wave in the AIDS epidemic. Yet through these years, I have never forgotten the kindness and faith that he demonstrated in me by offering me my first commission as a young playwright. Like the Boy in our story, John helped me to become “real.” One of my first lessons that we teach our students is that theatre is a collaborative effort—that is to say that it requires the equal dedication, discipline, and effort of all involved to realize a result. At BCT, talented staff and students of all ages and backgrounds have assembled for this production. I’m particularly grateful to Marjorie Tudor of Tasha Tudor & Family for her masterful creation of the puppet characters. It has been a supreme joy to witness her process. It is through her designs and the cast’s work that The Velveteen Rabbit has become “real.” I’m enormously proud of our staff and students’ hard work through the past weeks, all looking toward this very moment when they share the results with you, our audience. I hope you enjoy the result as much as we have enjoyed creating it for you.
