Venezuela is unique in Architecture
Ciudad UniversitariaHello! We are Odelis Lozada
and Sabine Beyer. We are
doing this video for our Final
Project of English class at
Universidad Simon Bolivar. We
are going to talk about all the
concepts we have been
working in class and show
how those concepts make
Venezuela unique in
architecture. We are going to
approach this project to the
Ciudad Universitaria de
Caracas, because we consider
it one of the most beautiful
and complete examples of
Venezuelan architecture.
Plaza Cubierta UCV
El aula magna de la Universidad Central de Venezuela” is the most important example for
acoustic because the designers thought not only in the material but also in the way the
ceilings were made, since the inclination is very important. It is very important when the
architect designs any element, to pay attention to the sound level, because sound level may
or may not create an enjoyable atmosphere for human. To avoid the echo is necessary to use
sound absorbent materials.
AULA MAGNA (UCV)
In this stained-glass window, we can appreciate how the use of the
colors and light generate a really enjoyable atmosphere. The presence
of sublime light and the use of warm colors make a big difference in how
you perceive the space.

The horizontal circulation is
really important in the Ciudad
Universitaria’s outdoors. It
defined by roofed corridors that
make the walk across them
really pleasant. Also the palms
make nicer the cross over those
corridors and crate a regular
rhythm.
The vertical circulation is really important too in the Ciudad
Universitaria. Vertical circulation is really important because it’s
the connector between all building’s floors. It’s expressed by
ramps and stairs.

The use of columns define the
crossover of the “Plaza Cubierta”
without using walls, and giving the
space a special rhythm. Besides, the
highness of the roof is comfortable for
pedestrians and allows the
comfortable permanence
In these pictures we can see how
the natural light makes a pretty
amenable space. The white wall
has not only a decorative
function, also reflects the light
and illuminates all the space.

In these pictures we can see the use the natural light
again, truth apertures in the roof and in the walls. The big
corridor is defined by a series of columns that determine
the horizontal circulation. The use of hard and polished
textures like concrete and mosaic make the rooms feel
lighter.

In this picture we can see the elements we mentioned before: the use of
color, light, rhythm and texture to create a particular atmosphere.

In Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, we can find all the elements
that can make the experience of the space more pleasant.
The vertical and horizontal circulation is very clear and defined by
corridors, staircase and ramps. The aspect of a space can change
depending of the use of light, texture and color. The use of color
can make a same space looks really different. So the use of a
specific color can make us feel in a specific way. Lighting and the
use of textures also can make a big difference in how you feel
about a space or a room. And the highness of all the spaces
around the Universidad Central de Venezuela makes a nice scale
for pedestrians. The use of columns and trees make the university
have a special rhythm. All this elements make Ciudad
Universitaria unique around the world, because Carlos Raul
Villanueva achievement integrates all those elements in the same
work.
