The inauguration ceremony also saw the launch of the Fair Directory and a specialpublication, "Promotion of Handicrafts for Inclusive & Sustainable Development-Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas", by Secretary Textiles, Dr. S K Panda.

Hon'ble Minister of State for Textiles (IC), Govt. of India, Mr. Santosh KumarGangwar said that our textiles and handicrafts sector have achieved a significantposition today, attracting buyers from all parts of the world. “Owing to our distinctproducts and some of our signature crafts that find no parallel world over, we canmake our buyers believe that our products can give them a new direction,” heemphasized and added, “moreover, our industry is supported by a strong skill base.We can combine this with tourism and flourish.” The Minister also said, "EPCH hasdone a commendable job in the past several years in making IHGF an importantinstrument for marketing Indian handicrafts worldwide," and shared that he isprivileged to have seen EPCH consistently add newness to the fair by expandingdisplay area and bringing in more exhibitors as well as products under its IHGFbanner.

“It is a rare privilege and opportunity to compliment and congratulate EPCH andthe industry’s stakeholders together,” exclaimed Dr. S K Panda referring to theadditional permanent structure at the India Expo Centre that came up in recordtime to offer 50% addition to the existing capacity offering a total of 14 exhibitionhalls in place of the earlier 8. “This could be possible due to the dedicated efforts ofthe EPCH and the handicrafts industry, with active support from officials from theUttar Pradesh Government and GNIDA for making this possible. He alsocongratulated the industry for its commendable growth of 17-18% annually andurged the exporters to work towards “inclusive growth” involving all segments ofthe value chain so that livelihood of the artisans who are the backbone of thehandicrafts sector can be improved. “This will put us in an advantageous position,”he said, highlighting the concept of “universal brotherhood”.

Chairman, EPCH, Mr. Dinesh Kumar called the inauguration of the show, a “proudmoment” for the entire industry that had seen the eventful IHGF journey from itsfirst edition in 1994 with 313 exhibitors to this show, with well over 2800exhibitors in 14 segmented halls across 190,000 sq. mts. He shared how the nameIHGF has touched all parts of the world, welcoming buyers from practically eachand every nation that imports home and lifestyle products “EPCH has toiled hard tomake this show take shape,” he said and shared about the massive publicitymeasures undertaken to reach out reach out to each prospective buyer in theworld, through print and online communiques as well as domestic volumeretailers and e-Commerce portals. The preliminary response is a great indication ofa good turnout and business.

With this edition, IHGF has achieved the tag of the world’s largest show, shared Mr.Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director, EPCH, mentioning about the addition of 6 newpermanent halls and their construction in record time to facilitate participation ofadditional exhibitors and inclusion of more product variety. He attributed theaccomplishment of this additional infrastructure at India Expo Centre to theChairman, GNIDA for his timely approval towards the project. This edition themedaround Garden and Outdoors, features 456 new(first time) exhibitors, he added.While thanking buyers, visitors and media persons for travelling long distances tovisit IHGF, Mr. Kumar said that with the metro getting functional in 2017,commuting to the Expo Centre from Delhi will be convenient and time-saving. Healso touched upon IHGF’s journey of 39 editions that culminated into an event ofinternational repute and a sourcing platform for major brands like M&S Home, Pier1 Imports, Cost Plus World Market, Ikea, Restoration Hardware, etc.

Lace & Crochet from NarsapurTHEME PAVILION THEME LOCATION, 2nd Floor, CFB

The elegance of lace & crochet as well asenthusiastic artisans dedicated to the craft greetone at the theme area of Narsapur, located onthe 2nd floor of the Central Function Building,India Expo Centre. There are few other lace craftentrepreneurs located in the home textilessegment of the fair. They are from Narsapur LaceCluster located in Andhra Pradesh that isinternationally renowned for handmadecrocheted lace and lace products.

A participant, K Kanak Lakshmi Durga isparticipating for the second time and this art is apart of her inherited family heritage. Theproducts she has on display are crochet tops,cushion covers and bags tuned for her exportmarkets-Malayasia and China. She is quitepleased with her first order for crochet topsworth Rs. 40 lakhs within the first two hours ofthe fair. She feels that connoisseur buyersunderstand the kind of painstaking effortsartisans put into each product. It takes at leasttwo days to finish a lace border, she says.

P Nagabhushanam and Divya Gangabhavani area husband wife team who has put up a vibrantstall with intricate crochet work in ponchos,tops, skirts, frocks, table mats and baby apparel.They have been participating in IHGF since thelast ten years and vouch for this “goodplatform”. They are getting good buyerattention, they shared.

Anantha Lakshmi from Society for Health,Agriculture and Rural Education has got alongartisans who practice this craft with a passion tomake products that move lace from its usualdomain. Here one can find varieties in lacebuttons and sleeves, borders and chunkydecorative balls which could be stitched on toany fabric. They have an intricate collection ofsari borders in interesting colour combinations.They also have toys that almost look machinemade.

Naga Lakshmi from Laces Park has interestingfinger puppets alongside mobile pouches, babyfrocks, ponchos and other crochet home textileslike cushion covers.

Among exporters, A.V. Exports represented byBrahma Rao is participating for the fifth time.They have a variety in curtains made from a mixof fabric and lace as he feels buyers do not liketo buy a lot of pure lace products. His customersare mostly from Germany and France. Being thefirst day, he had only received a few enquiriesbut seemed hopeful of signing off with goodbusiness.

Ketan Jain of Jain Enterprises who is a regular atEPCH fairs congratulates the IHGF team on a“promising fair”. Bringing handmade crochetproducts to the fair for the past 15 years, he

shares that he observed that buyers do notdesire pure lace products and hence he hasexpanded his product range to include bath andkitchen linen. His buyers now are mostly fromEurope and Latin American countries as hiscustomer base in US and Japan have dippedover time.

M Gopal Krishna of Golden lace Exports hasbeen participating in IHGF since the past tenyears. They have brightly coloured cushioncovers, throws and curtains. He shared aboutenquiries from Italian customers and washopeful of getting more business.

B. Peedi Raju from P. Tayar and Company whocaters primarily to a European customer basefollows his family tradition in this craft. Theyoffer a range in cushions, bed sheets, curtainsand other crochet products. Their colourfulstriped curtains were quite a hit as they hadgenerated many enquiries.

The lace industry atNarsapur in AndhraPradesh is famousworldwide for over300 kinds ofdesigns whichmade by the homebased lace maker ofthis region. Thereare many exportersin Narsapur who areengaged in theproduction of laceproducts and havebeen exporting toUSA, Europe and Japan and now want toexpand their reach into new markets as well.

The Day 1 fashion shows at witnessed PragyaInternational with their hand embellishedevening dresses with floral prints and coloureffects, hand crafted by women artisans fromDelhi. Also showcased were hand craftedbeaded jewellery, ethnic evening wear andformal wear. From Studio Saloni there werehand embellished apparel and jewellery. Inkeeping with theSpring Summer 2016theme, dominantcolours includedpapaya, mangoyellow and pink rose.The afternoonpresentationhighlighted PragyaInternational’s boldstripes and citriccolours for SpringSummer 2016 with allsummer, silk resort/beachwear andrelated accessories.Beads Kingdom presented tribal jewellery-with gold matt finished hammered textured(forged) collections as well as inlay of irregularshapes of stone celebrating the spirit ofethnicity with cuffs, chokers and rings; PNRCrafts Pvt. Ltd. promoted buffalo leather- hardwaxed, travel bags, satchels, sling bags, etc.

They are heremainly for small handicrafts home and giftsitems such as kitchenware, wall hangings,décor, etc. They tell us that, these items arehugely popular back home in England,interestingly among tourists there from all overthe world. Besides India, they also source fromChina. They say that while China is more massproduction oriented, Indian markets offer morehand-made items. They see a lot of promise inIndian producers and market with fewmodifications to suit international taste andtrends.

Artisan products from Mega ClustersA line up of stalls with hand crafted and handembellished home textiles, decoratives andapparel accessories constitute the theme pavilionof artisan products from mega clusters ofLucknow, Bareilly, Bhuj & J&K. Focus is on handembellishments like chikankari, zari and zardoziof Lucknow; jewellery, cane & bamboo craft andwood carving from Bareilly; Kashmiri woodcarving, papier machie, hand embroideredshawls & stoles from J&K; and azrakh painting,bell metal art and leather craft from Bhuj.

Anil Kumar Sharma a State awardee fromBareilly, Uttar Pradesh runs a family workshop ofhand-crafted bamboo and cane products, withmostly relatives, hoping to pass this skill to thefuture generation. These products have theirregular buyers in in Delhi, Nainital, andsometimes Mumbai. This is their firstparticipation at IHGF and within the first fewhours of the show, attracted attention andenquiries. A firm Glorious Creations, fromBareilly with Mohmd. Farooq as theirrepresentative has an industrial unit producingclothing material, tops and dresses with intricatevalue addition in the form of sequins and beadson cotton and georgette fabric. This is their thirdparticipation at the fair and the first day gotthem an order for 1000 dresses from a Londonbased buyer.

Handmade home furnishings at this pavilioncome from Five Nine Consultancies headedby a father son duo from Bareilly. They havedisplayed a range in pillow covers and tablecovers, using sequins and beads. Theirproduction unit, consisting of 50 artisans usesfabrics like tissue, net, and cotton for the base.This is their 2nd participation and they haveattracted buyer attention.

With their base in Lucknow, Network ofEntrepreunership & EconomicDevelopment(NEED), represented here, workon the grassroot level with about 5,000women, men and young artisans based in andaround Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, namely thetowns of Kakori, Mehmudabad andMuzaffarpur. Their trade-oriented segment ofZarchi is affiliated to Fair Trade in the US, and isa business tie-up aimed at providing fair-wageemployment to poor artisans while providingskill-training and helplines to those in need. Theartists employ 'chikankari' and 'zardozi' work onvarious fabrics like 100% cotton, silk, jute, puregeorgette, silk, organza silk, all absolutelyorganic, shaping them into several products liketote bags, yoga bags, wallets, summer -coats,crop-tops, dresses, etc. The designs are mostlyoriginal with a mix of contemporary style andtraditional kalamkari work.

J K Sunflower Womens and Child WelfareSociety exhibiting entirely handmade productslike Pashmina, Semi-Pashmina shawls andwoolen kurtis is represented by Mdm Haseenawho has samples of needle-work, aari-work andzari-work from their collection of works.Connected to them are about 3,000 artisansbased in Srinagar and the district of Pulvama.Their products are in great demand in Delhi,Chandigarh, Mumbai, and even several places inKashmir. Their handmade shawls have attractedmany prospective buyers.

COLOR SWATCHES

OCEAN BLUES and GREENSRoyal blues in the range of indigo, sky blue,aqua, navy and cobalt are colors alwaysassociated with summer. Teal, a color of theblue green shade will play a key colordirection amongst the blues. Mixed withgreen, it reminds of us anything nature. Thesenature hues offer warm and cool huesspecially on apple green as a key color in thisbundle.
