Art is a direct by-product of societal, cultural and historical fluctuations, and at its
heart,
Norval Foundation provides an open platform for the creative expression of art and
culture.
It was with this focus in mind that Norval Foundation was created – a new centre
for the research and exhibition of 20th and 21st-century visual art from South
Africa and beyond. Located in the Steenberg area of Cape Town, adjacent to Table
Mountain National Park, Norval Foundation combines the experience of art with an
appreciation for nature.
Its sculpture garden, outdoor amphitheatre, purpose-built exhibition spaces and
research library are situated within a unique setting that offers visitors a multi-
sensory experience. This is complemented by a sophisticated restaurant and bar, a
bespoke shop and a children’s playground.
For the discerning event planner looking to host a memorable, unmissable and out-
of-the-ordinary event, look no further than Norval Foundation.

Norval Foundation was designed to include
adaptive spaces that can be transformed to align to
the needs of each event, therefore, the foundation’s
event spaces offer unlimited possibilities. From the
very first glimpse of Norval Foundation, set in the
heart of the Steenberg wine region, one can sense
the ambition of the project, but by stepping inside
the venue, one understands that you are surrounded
by the art that has shaped our world. Africa’s history
is indelibly intertwined with each space.
The foundation runs the gamut of artistic endeavour,
from Irma Stern’s Arab, and Cecil Skotnes’ Head
Study, to Gerard Marx and William Kentridge’s Fire
Walker, among hundreds of other works. The Norval
Foundation is honoured to be the custodians of the
Gerard Sekoto Foundation, Edoardo Villa Estate
Collection, and the Alexis Preller Archive.

ECOLOGICAL IMPORTANCEThis area plays a vital role in sustaining aquatic biota and in providing essential resources to terrestrial animals.
SUSTAINABILITY The aim is to preserve this natural ecosystem and its unique species to allow evolutionary processes to continue indefinitely.
THREATENED SPECIESThe Steenberg area has been identified as a breeding habitat for the endangered Western Leopard Toad and as such the rehabilitation of this site has been of utmost importance.
AESTHETIC, RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL VALUEThe sculpture park allows visitors to be inspired not only by the artworks, but also by the flora and fauna of the Steenberg area.
Norval Foundation’s Art Museum and Sculpture Garden occupy a site that is of environmental and ecological importance. This sensitive wetland site had over many years deteriorated into a wasteland of invader species of plants. The development of this site has brought about renewal and regeneration of the wetland by removing all alien and invasive plant species. These areas have been sensitively replanted by Keith Kirsten International, with indigenous flora that is local to the area. The adjoining seven residential platforms will be landscaped using the same principles.

Our concert series aims to bring the very best musicians into an intimate, creative space. Our vision is to create an entirely unique experience for the listener, where an eclectic collection of music genres blends in effortlessly with a museum and gallery experience. The concert programme will feature not only the best South African classical, jazz, rock, folk, contemporary and electronic musicians, but also some of the world’s best international touring musicians. We are already in talks to realise the exciting possibility of hosting musicians from New York and various parts of Europe and, of course, South Africa’s very best in our 2018 programme. Kyle Shepherd is the Adjunct Curator of the music concert programme.

Situated on the upper floor of Norval Foundation, our apartment has been purpose-built to host honorary artists-in-residence, curators, academics and collectors. Like the foundation itself, the apartment was designed by DHK Architects as a modern meeting point between nature, architecture and art.
There are two large bedrooms, both en suite. The spacious balcony offers elevated views of the Sculpture Garden and vineyards beyond, while the front door allows direct access to the foundation and galleries below. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering and The Skotnes Restaurant and Bar is just below on the ground floor.
