Venus Superior Conjunction
To we observers here on Earth, we see that it takes 584 days for Venus to travel one time around the
zodiac. At this time – here and now - Venus has just completed a full cycle around the zodiac and if we
study the planetary positions in the zodiac we see Venus is at 0 degrees conjunction to the Sun in the
sign of Capricorn. We call this set-up a Superior Conjunction.
Venus is at Superior Conjunction right now
What is interesting about Superior Conjunction is to an observer on Earth, Venus is not visible as it is
obscured by the Sun. However, about 3-4 weeks after the exact Superior Conjunction, Venus will be far
enough away from the glare of the Sun to become visible. With this present Superior Conjunction event,
in the first part of February, Venus will become visible in the early morning sky as the Morning Star.
Ancient civilizations followed the appearance of Venus with great diligence and timed their actions
accordingly. If any of you have studied the precepts of Freemasonry, you will also be familiar with
reference to the Morning Star.
What’s further interesting, every five Superior Conjunctions occur at the same sign and roughly the
degree. For example, the Superior Conjunction in 2011 was at 23 Leo. The Superior Conjunction due in
August 2019 will be at 21 Leo. Plotting the Superior Conjunctions in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017
events on the zodiac wheel will trace out a 5-sided pentagram figure. If you wish to study the data more
fully, take a look at https://alabe.com/VeCycle-1.pdf.
Let’s now take a look at how Venus Superior Conjunctions and the subsequent appearance several
weeks later of Venus in the sky. Is there an effect on the S&P 500?
2013 Superior Conjunction
In 2013 Venus was at Superior Conjunction in late March as shown by the shaded bar on the above chart
of the S&P 500. Some weeks later when Venus again became visible in the sky, the S&P 500 turned in a
120 point rally.
There is never any guarantee of a rally following a Superior Conjunction. One must carefully follow the
prevailing market trend using a suitable trend indicator such as the Wilder Volatility Stop or a key
Moving Average.
2014 Superior Conjunction
In 2014 Venus was at Superior Conjunction in late October as shown by the shaded bar on the above
chart of the S&P 500. I find it curiously interesting that the trend suddenly turned negative immediately
ahead of the Superior Conjunction.
More interesting is just as Venus Superior Conjunction arrived, the S&P 500 rallied over 200 points.
Some weeks later when Venus again became visible in the sky, the S&P 500 turned in just over a 100
point fall.
These events certainly underscore the importance of following the trend closely at Superior
Conjunctions.
2016 Superior Conjunction
In 2016 Venus was at Superior Conjunction in early June as shown by the shaded bar on the above chart
of the S&P 500. The exact conjunction between Sun and Venus marked a sudden trend change and the
S&P 500 dropped 120 points. The loss was soon re-couped, but some weeks later when Venus again
became visible in the sky, the S&P 500 levelled off and drifted sideways to down for the next five
months.
2018 Superior Conjunction
In 2018 Venus was at Superior Conjunction in early January as shown by the shaded bar on the above
chart of the S&P 500. In early February, it will become visible in the sky again.
What will the markets do? I say expect the unexpected in a market that is taking on an almost
parabolic pattern. The trend is positive. Watch for any suggestion that the trend may turn negative.
Act accordingly. An “at the money PUT option” taken out at the first hint of a trend change might be
the way to go in this situation.
McWhirter Case Studies
For the benefit of recent subscribers, let’s now take a look at some recent New Moon events using the
McWhirter methodology and the S&P 500 as a proxy for the market. Note the basic set-up in all these
cases. I have the Ascendant at 14 Cancer. The Houses are all equal. Therefore the top part of the zodiac
(the Mid Heaven) will fall at 24 Pisces. This is how McWhirter built her zodiac wheels.
The Sept 19 New Moon was NOT
in any aspect to other planets.
Jupiter was 60 degrees favorable
to Saturn and 60 degrees
favorable to the Node.
Prognosis: generally positive
Result of this lunar cycle: S&P up
about 62 points
The Oct 19 New Moon was within
orb of being conjunct positive
planet Jupiter. New Moon was 60
degrees favorable to Saturn. Mars
is square Saturn which suggests
some pressure. Saturn favorable
120 degrees to Uranus.
Prognosis: generally positive, but
with some volatility.
Result of this lunar cycle: S&P up
a net of about 20 points, but
during this lunar cycle there was a
drawdown of ~30 points at one
point.
The Nov 17 New Moon was NOT in
aspect to any planets. Jupiter is at
a favorable 120 degree trine to
NYSE co-ruler Neptune. This is a
good sign.
Prognosis: positive
Result of this lunar cycle: S&P up a
net of about 100 points.
The Dec 17 New Moon was at a
favorable 120 degree trine to Uranus.
Co-rulers Mars and Neptune are at a
favorable 120 degree trine to one
another – a good sign. New Moon is at a
0 degree conjunction to Saturn which
could be a problem.
Prognosis: generally positive
Result of this lunar cycle: as the Moon
passed over the Saturn point on the 18th
,
there was a small drawdown on the S&P
500. An explosive rally started Jan 2 as
Moon passed 14 Cancer point. January
11 saw a small bit of weakness as Moon
passed Mars.
The Jan 16 New Moon is at a favorable
conjunction to Venus. The New Moon is
at a hard 90 degrees to Uranus. This is
offset by a 60 degree aspect to Jupiter
and Mars. Mars is a hard 90 degrees to
the Node. Saturn is 60 degrees to NYSE
co-ruler Neptune.
Prognosis: a generally balanced situation.
Pay attention to the dates when Moon
passes 24 Pisces and 14 Cancer. Also
watch dates when Moon passes Neptune
and Mars.

Practical exercise: If you are practicing the McWhirter method at home, plot the planetary positions
for the New Moon of Feb 16th
. You can find the planetary data at a variety of sites on-line. Use the
following blank zodiac to plot the planets. Do you see any hard aspects between the New Moon and
other planets? Any aspects between NYSE co-rulers Mars and Neptune? Is this a warning sign?
