Our school community received ashes on our foreheads as reminder of our mortality and sinfulness. Christians traditional observe Lent by fasting or giving up things that they enjoy, whether that’s eating sweets or meat or even watching television. This is a way for us to prepare our bodies and souls for the coming of the Resurrection at Easter, and in a greater sense to improve and better ourselves in preparation for our own deaths and our return to God. But Lent doesn’t have to be just about giving up the bad things; it can also be about making a conscious effort to do more of the good things. In a prayer I shared with our faculty last week, we were reminded that Lent can be about both fasting and feasting: Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling within them. Fast from the emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of all life. Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from worry; feast on trust. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence. My prayer for Lent is that we as a school community can give up those things that separate us from God and work toward those things that bring us all closer to God. Dear Verb Families,

On February 17, we began the season of Lent in prayer during

our Ash Wednesday liturgy.

In a prayer I shared with our faculty last week, we were reminded that Lent can be about both fasting and feasting:Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling within them.Fast from the emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of all life.Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify.Fast from anger; feast on patience.Fast from worry; feast on trust.Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.

My prayer for Lent is that we as a school community can give up those things that separate us from God and work toward those things that bring us all closer to God.

I look forward to seeing you at Parent-Teacher confer-ences on Thursday, March 18, and at the WASC parent meeting on Sunday, March 21 at 5pm!

Scripture of the Month

We are in the Lent season, and the church at this moment asks each of us to take some time from

our busy, hectic life and spend time to pray, to fast and to share with one another. With so many things that are going on in our lives; with work, with worries and with concerns, let us keep one thing in our mind and to reflect on: “You shall worship the Lord your God and serve only him.” (Luke 4: 8)
