This is one of the 4 DEECD pupil free days allocated throughout the year for such purposes. As a result Friday 30 August is a DEECD Professional Development PUPIL FREE DAY. The day is set aside for further planning and development of the schools move into the 4 period day starting on Monday 25 November 2013. PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY Last Wednesday was the annual ‘Principal for a Day’ program organised by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research). This year I had two representatives for the day, Councillor Bill Bennett and Mike Symon the Federal Member for Deakin. The day involved touring the College, spending time at the Production Matinee attended by local primary school children, observing the Year 9 into 10 Pathways transition interviews and a discussion with Ms Eames, our Pathways Leader, about student options in the VCE/ VET program and beyond. We also discussed the need for a new senior Maths/ Science wing and visited our much out-dated senior science rooms. There was also discussion about the Vicroads proposal for the land south of our border that was originally set aside for the proposed **Healesville Freeway. At recess Bill and Mike met with the Assistant Principals for a great morning tea provided by our College Canteen. Thanks to Bill and Mike for participating in the day and being actively involved in our school program. **Note: The Healesville Freeway Reservation Community Consultation Report is now available to view online at http://consult.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ hfrconsult IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL STUDENTS THAT USE THE VENTURA BUS SERVICE Ventura Buses are reporting that large numbers of students are still failing to touch on or off their myki when travelling on our buses. Most students believe that if they using the myki pass (weekly, monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly) that they have pre-paid for their trip and are therefore not required to touch on or off as they enter or exit our buses. If your myki cannot be touched on for any reason it is not valid for travel, and to travel without a valid myki means that you are a fare evader. Ventura Bus Lines (incorporating Invicta Bus Services) would like to remind students that you are required to “touch on” your myki as you enter the bus and “touch off” your myki as you exit the bus, failure to do so could result in issuance of an infringement notice by one of our revenue protection officers. The other reason why students should be encouraged to touch on and off is that the trip information gathered by the ticketing system may be used to identify areas where additional bus services are required to cater for increasing patronage. All students are asked to follow the touch on/off process of the myki ticketing system to ensure that they are not issued an infringement notice and also to ensure services that your schools have come to rely upon are maintained and perhaps increased. LIBRARY NEWS

VSC Students Celebrate State Library

Dome Centenary with Minecraft

Four students from VSC were recently selected to help the State Library of Victoria celebrate the Centenary of the Domed Reading Room by recreating it on Minecraft. Henry, Kian, Janina and Ethan joined a team of fourteen students from across Victoria for the first two weekends in August to create a replica of the Latrobe Domed Reading Room using MineCraft, a web tool that allows players to build and create constructions from textured cubes in a virtual 3D world. The team based their model on original architectural drawings from the library’s collection and from photographs they took as they toured the building. The students worked exceptionally hard and ended up with an online version nearly as awe-inspiring as the original building. It was a great opportunity for students to gain some understanding of the complexities of architectural planning and to work as a collaborative team to problem-solve mathematical and spatial dilemmas. The Minecraft Domed Reading Room will soon be available for the public to tour. We will post a link as soon as it is made available. Congratulations to all the students on being selected to participate in this very special event.

Vietnam Veterans Visit

On Wednesday 14 August four members from the Vietnam Veterans Association visited the Library and gave a talk on their experiences to some of our Year 10, 11 & 12 History and Literacy students. The Vets spoke about conditions that common soldiers experienced, conscription, the Battle of Long Tan, how war effects more than just soldiers, social conditions in Australia in the 1970’s and much more. Our students were engrossed in the descriptions of life under fire and many stayed around long after the end of the school day to ask questions and examine the various pieces of memorabilia and equipment that the Vets had bought in.

SPORTS REPORT

VSC UPCOMING SPORTS EVENTS

Thursday 29 August Division Athletics Thursday 5 Sept Senior Girls Table Tennis All Schools Championships Monday 9 Sept Year 8 Division Round Robin Friday 13 Sept Year 7 Division Round Robin

Division Intermediate Round Robin

The Division Round Robin was held on Monday and the various sports played were Basketball, Table Tennis and Hockey. The Table Tennis team of four very talented Year 10 boys smashed their opponents out of the water. The team convincingly won all their matches against Mount Waverley SC, Glen Waverley SC, Highvale SC and Ashwood College. They managed to only lose 3 points for the entire day! A fantastic achievement and the boys have progressed to the Eastern Regional finals on Wednesday 30 October. Good luck! Thanks to Ms Freeman for organising and looking after the students on the day. Basketball was played at Dandenong and with two boys and two girl’s teams from each of the five schools in our Division, it turned out to be a busy day of Basketball. The girls ‘A’ team only lost one match for the whole day and convincingly won all other matches played. They fin-ished 2nd place over all. The girls ‘B’ team showed great fight and ex-cellent talent in both defensive and offensive plays and won all their matches to finish in 1st place over all. Well done girls! The boys ‘A’ team won two of their four matches for the day. Narrowly losing to Mt Waverley SC and Glen Waverley SC the boys had good wins against Highvale SC and Ashwood College. A great effort boys to finish in 3rd place overall. The boys ‘B’ team were a solid unit and they won all their games except one, losing by only 1 point! The game was a nail biter with the boys playing it out until the final buzzer. Well done boys on finishing 2nd place overall. Thanks to Ms Alison and Mr Stevens for coaching and organising the teams during the competition and to student teacher Toni for convening the day. Also thanks to the many student helpers who acted as coaches and scorers. Hockey was played at Waverley and both the boys and girl’s teams were under the direction of super coaches Billings and Trollope. Coach Trollope was in charge of the girls’ team. Through great man-agement and even greater skills from the girls, they started the day well with a win. They went on to win one more match and despite some great shots at goal and team work across the field, lost two games for the remainder of the competition. A great effort by the girls to finish in 3rd place overall. The boys were Coach Billings’ charges. He had them trained up and ready to win. And that they did. Three wins and one draw was enough to allow them to finish top of the table. There were some awesome saves by our goalie and some equally awesome goals scored by the attackers. A great effort boys, and good luck at Region early in Term 4. Thanks to Mr Billings and Mr Trollope for training and coaching the students.

Division Athletics

The VSC 2013 Division Athletics team has been posted on the Sports Noticeboard. Students need to check carefully and let Ms Macfarlane know if they have any questions or concerns. Any students wishing to run in the hurdles events need to come and register with Ms Macfar-lane directly. Term 3 Sports

Sports on offer this term are Basketball, Table Tennis and Hockey. A list of teachers coaching the teams has been posted on the Sports Noticeboard.
