If you have trouble accessing these reports or you need password support then please contact the General Office. 2016 Parent Opinion Survey Returns Each year, as required by the Department of Education and Training (DET), the school conducts an opinion survey of 15 per cent of the school community. The use of the DET opinion data as an indicator of school performance is a very important step towards making Vermont Secondary College the best school it can possibly be. The College, via the DET, annually run anonymous opinion surveys for staff, students and parents. We use this information to inform and direct our plans for future school improvement, for example in the writing of the existing College Strategic Plan 2013 – 2016, accessible on the College website, and in the development of the new Strategic Plan 2017 – 2020. The Annual Implementation Plan (AIP), also available on the College website, likewise incorporates findings and recommendations from these three surveys. Parents/guardians are randomly selected by the DET. The College does not generate this contact list nor does it write the survey. If you have been chosen I would ask you to take the time to complete the survey (approximately 20 minutes) as your opinions are important to us and will be reflected in the management and organisation of the school. Many parents over the years will have completed these surveys. Please return your completed survey to school by Friday 29th July 2016. Thank you for taking the time to participate, your assistance is greatly appreciated. All parents who return a completed survey will go into the prize draw for a $100 gift voucher from Knox City Shopping Centre! I look forward to your participation in this important feedback process. Year 8 City Camp Congratulations to the Year 8 Macedon students who attended City camp in Week 1 of term. Despite forecasts of artic weather, the students approached all activities with enthusiasm and curiosity. The student’s behaviour was commended by Vermont teaching staff, tour leaders and strangers on trams! They were an absolute credit to the College. Good luck to the Hotham group on camp this week and the Year 8 Stirling students in Week 3.

Year 12 Progress Conferences On Wednesday afternoon, staff had many meaningful conversations with parents and students in Year 12 as part of the mid- year Student Progress Conferences. Our Year 12 students are well into the last Unit of VCE and are working conscientiously with their teachers at these interviews to target areas for improvement and to fine tune their efforts in the lead up to their final school assessments and exams. Student Progress Conferences for Years 7 – 11 will be held on Wednesday 14 September.

Senior Science Centre This week the school has been notified that a building company has been awarded the tender to build the Senior Science Complex. Hopefully building will start by the end of August and it is anticipated to be a 140 day build, so it is on track to be completed early in 2017. This is exciting news for the College and along with the development of the Year 8 Centre offers much improved facilities for students.

iPad Applications Over recent weeks we have received a number of enquiries from new parents with regard to the apps that are required for the iPad in Years 7 & 8. There is a full list of the apps required for the junior school on the website under the iPad drop down tab. The website is an excellent resource for parents and should be the first port of call for all parents.

‘Chocs for Chairs’ Given the announcement around the Senior Science Centre, it is very timely to remind parents that payments for chocolates are due this Friday. The money raised is to be used to furnish the new rooms in the centre. The school receives no additional funding for furniture to furnish the new Science rooms, so your fund raising efforts are greatly appreciated.

Fake Pokemon Go App Contains Malware and Can Steal Your Information: Alert Priority Moderate A malicious version of the popular Pokémon Go game is believed to be targeting Android users. The malware’s (malicious software’s) existence reinforces that smartphone owners should only install apps from legitimate app

stores (such as Google Play or Apple’s App Store) to reduce the risk to their devices and data.Pokémon Go was

released officially in Australia on 6 July. However, some people may be tempted to install unofficial versions of the app, using a method known as ‘side-loading’. The method involves downloading a copy of the game from a

location on the internet that is not an official app store, and installing it onto a smartphone. You are advised to be

extremely cautious in side-loading apps, and Stay Smart Online recommends that you do not install apps from unofficial sources. It can be hard to verify that unofficial apps do not contain malware or have otherwise been altered.

Year 11 English Guest Speaker On Monday 25 July, the Year 11 English students will be lucky enough to be visited by Najaf Mazari and Robert Hillman, authors of the text 'The Rugmaker of Mazar-E-Sharif'. This will be an invaluable opportunity for students to gain an insight into the lives of those who suffer during conflict and their ability to recover from tragedy.

Najaf Mazari was a shepherd boy from the mountains of Afghanistan who became a rugmaker but was forced to flee his homeland under the onslaught of the Taliban. He painstakingly rebuilt his life in Australia and rescued his family from the despair of Pakistan’s refugee camps. Robert Hillman has published more than sixty works of fiction and non-fiction. His books feature in school libraries all over Australia and his autobiography, The Boy in the Green Suit, won the 2005 Australian National Biography Award. His writing helps to bring Najaf's story to life, illuminating the plight of refugees and asylum seekers.

The Benefits of Mouthguards A mouthguard is an easy and cost-effective way to reduce the risk of injury when playing sport. The Australian Dental Association has set out 5 good reasons why mouthguards should be worn when playing sport:

cushions teeth against impact

protects against jaw joint injuries

protects against soft tissue injuries

helps prevent neck & jaw injuries

may help reduce a concussion.

As a rule of thumb, the Australian Dental Association strongly recommends that custom-fitted mouthguards should be worn whilst playing and training for any sport where there is possibility of contact to the face. These sports can include football, hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, netball, basketball and baseball. Please ensure your son/daughter has a mouthguard for Physical Education classes.

Leos Club Update The Vermont Secondary College Leos Club have been hard at work this year, donating and raising money for a myriad of non-profit charities. Our members have been working diligently, partaking in local fundraising such as sausage sizzles and free dress days. Last term our Leos Club members were able to donate $420.35 to Interchange Inner East (a specialist charity for children and adolescent respite/recreation support to families in Melbourne’s inner east). The donation even caught the attention of the organisation’s executive officer, Marie Lugg. Marie emphatically congratulated our Vermont Secondary College’s Leos Club members in a recent letter, praising our student’s ability to raise funds, thereby enhancing Interchange’s recreation activities for their participants. These particular funds are going towards running a reptile show in the next school holidays. We at Leos Club work to raise money to aid people and animals alike, through activities both inside and outside of school. In the process, students have been able to acquire essential life skills of leadership, team and community ethic and diplomacy. Without making any journalistic conclusions, I can confidently state that most student members, including myself, have found being part of the Vermont Secondary College Leos Club (in partnership with the South Vermont Lions Club) exceptionally rewarding. Over the past financial year the club has donated over $4500 to a range of charities including the Breast Cancer Council, Irabina, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Beyond Blue, Cystic Fibrosis Australia, Orangutan Project, the Butterfly Foundation, the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Centre, Interchange and the Lions Club International Fiji Appeal. If supporting these charities as well as any other is something that you are interested in, please come along to our next meeting on Friday 29 July in L09 at lunchtime and find out how you can make a difference. Students in Year 8 are currently in the middle of attending their City Camp Experience. Highlights include an Etihad tour, MSAC, Melbourne Star Observation Wheel and a Queen Victoria Market tour. Their task will be to collect information and persuade their class on returning to school that “Melbourne is the city of …” -food/fashion/sport –whatever their research topic is on camp. Macedon Camp 13 -15 July Hotham Camp 20 -22 July Stirling Camp 27-29 July The Sports group on Year 8 Macedon camp were treated to a special Olympic themed tour of the MCG and an Olympian meet and greet in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. They were addressed by Trevor Brown, who competed for Australia in Table Tennis in the Athens 2004 Olympics. “Trevor told us of his achievements and challenges growing up with a dream of competing at the Olympics, including a life threatening brain hemorrhage that required surgery and unfortunately put him out of the running for Sydney 2000. We all had a fantastic time asking Trevor questions, playing at the 'Game On' exhibition and going on an Olympic themed tour of the MCG learning about why Melbourne truly is the city of sport.” Ms Glanville

Egypt Project Year 7s have been studying ancient civilisations in their IS classes. The Student Managers were able to come across some fabulous projects such as Donggeon Lee’s (7M4) massive set of coffins including a mummy. Well done!

German Poetry Competition Over the course of last term, German classes worked on a poem that was chosen by their teacher for the students to learn. They then had a class competition and the top three winners from the class then went on to compete against other classes of their year level. Then the top two winners of the year level went on to the Regional finals against other schools. Thomas Whitty of 7S3 competed and won against the other Year 7s. Everyone who competed should be very proud because it was definitely a tough competition!

On Thursday 16 June, Ms Moraitis and I were fortunate to be part of the audience at Swinburne University for the culmination of the exciting BrainSTEM program that four of our senior students have been involved in. The event was an opportunity for the students to present the findings of their investigations to their parents, teachers, University mentors and the teams of students from other involved schools. The Vermont students, Georgia Dunstan, Tahlia Tritt, Alex Dobroff and Tim Dempsey researched the impact of man made surfaces to the temperature of the local environment. This phenomena is known as the ‘urban heat effect’. The students collected surface temperature data from neighbouring Bellbird Dell and streets surrounding Vermont Secondary College. Particularly interesting in their findings was the increased radiant heat from artificial grass as compared to concrete. Our students, by this stage named the “urban heats” presented to the audience their video, reporting on their learning of the Urban Heat Phenomena, capturing their findings and posing further research questions. Following their presentation they responded to questions from the audience in a confident and knowledgeable manner that showed the extent to which they had fully engaged with their subject matter. This was an incredible opportunity for the students to be involved with Science at a University level and to be exposed to the many avenues that pursuing a career in Science can take. Thank you to Ms Moraitis for coordinating the program for Vermont and taking the students to the four sessions at Swinburne University. Well done to our students for the magnificent way in which you represented the Vermont Secondary College. Good luck to the four students and Mr Sanders in your involvement in the next BrainSTEM program later in Term 3. Suzanne Plant, Assistant Principal

Victorian All Schools Diving Championships On Saturday 14 May both Billie and Piper Bennett represented VSC at the Victorian All Schools Diving Championships as well as the trials for SSV selection for the Schools Nationals. In the All Schools Billie dived very well to achieve a silver medal with equal second place in the Year 9/10 springboard event. Piper also dived well to place 5th in the Year 7/8 Springboard event. In the SSV team trials, the top 3 divers of each event were selected for inclusion in the State team. Piper missed out on selection with a 4th place in the platform and 6th place in the springboard. Billie, however made the team with 3rd place in the girls 15 year old springboard event. She will therefore go on to represent VSC and Team Vic at the National schools diving competition in Lightning Ridge in Aug/Sept this year. State Cross Country In 2016, Vermont had three students qualify to run at the State Cross Country Finals at Bundoora Park on Thursday 14 June but unfortunately Alex Jones was unable to attend so we had two students actually running on the day! Both Chelsea Smith and Daniel Harding did an exceptional job on the day, both running excellent times and placing well. Daniel ran his 3000m race in an outstanding time of 10:46, placing him 51st in the State in his age group. Chelsea ran her 3000m race in 11:26, placing her at an amazing 22nd in the State for her age group. Congratulations to both of you, you should be extremely proud! Global Lyncs Citizenship Program

Vermont Secondary College is pleased to announce that we are now participating in DET’s Global Lyncs Citizenship Program. We are very proud to announce that we are now affiliated with the Dong Byun Middle School in Daegu , South Korea. The project will see a group of VSC students in regular communication with students at the Dong Byun Middle School via video conference. Students will create and work on promotion and celebration of our two school communities along with some cross curriculum content. This is a wonderful opportunity for developing true global citizenship. Dong Byun Middle School is a small school with 459 students and 34 staff. It is located in the northern suburban area of Daegu Metropolitan City. Students range from 11 (Year 1) to 15 (Year 3) years of age. Students who are interested in participating in the program please contact Ms Simpson in the Library.

VSC Community Association News Welcome back to Term 3 at Vermont SC. Hope you all had a very pleasant break, despite the inconvenience of an election right in the middle of the holidays. First of all, a very big “thank you” to all the families who patronised our BBQ stand and Books Sale on 2 July. All funds collected go to providing better equipment and facilities for our children and we truly appreciate your efforts to chip in. When the results last came in, it appears that we grossed almost $2,000 for our efforts. Of course, our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Leanne and Shannon Hudson and the merry band of CA volunteers, who generously gave off their valuable time to make this possible. The VSCCA is the social, networking and fundraising arm of the College. The benefits of participation are threefold. One, we help raise valuable funds for the College to buy additional equipment for the students, not covered by the Department of Education grants. Second, parent interest and involvement in the College sends a very powerful message of support to students and staff; and third, this is an excellent way of meeting new friends whilst seeing your efforts rewarded by an improved school environment. If you want to be involved, please leave your contact details at the College General Office or email Jenny Smith at [email protected]. The meetings and events provide a great opportunity to meet other parents, and also members of the College leadership team. In the meantime, the Chocolate Drive is now in over-drive. If you have not eaten your way through an entire box during the holidays, call your neighbours over for a choc fest! There are still a few boxes remaining, for those who do not want to feel left out. But hurry, contact Jenny Smith immediately. To those that have sold out their share, we would appreciate you returning the slips and money as soon as possible. Is there a prize to the class selling the most chocolates? There should be. Please note, if you did not wish to purchase chocolates, you could instead start the new financial year on a benevolent note and make a tax deductible donation to the College! For further information, contact the College General Office. Our other fundraising drive is the recycling of mobile phones and tablets. Please see the following pages for more information. And finally, if you have an idea – fundraising or social networking – please send it to us. See details on pages 18 & 19 of this Newsletter.
