We here at Town Hall are beginning to prepare for Town Meeting. The following offices are coming up for re-election:

Food for FinesThe Poultney Public Library

is holding a food drive now through Saturday, January 9. Patrons returning overdue books may donate non-perishable food items at the Library instead of paying their overdue fines. If you have returned overdue books in the past, but still owe fines, donate food to clear up your account for a fresh start in 2010.

Library patrons without overdue fines are also welcome to leave food donations at the Library. All food collected will be given to the Poultney Food Shelf.

Replacement fees for lost or damaged books will still need to be paid in cash.

‘The Little Prince’The beloved children’s story

by Antoine de Saint-Exupery comes to life as an opera with a enchanting score by Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman and the delight-ful rhyming libretto by Nicholas Wright.

Performing the leading role of the “Little Prince” is boy soprano, Taylor Ampatiellos, from Rutland, and singing the role of the “Rose” is Manchester’s soprano Lindsay Dyett. Described as “a work with heart-wrenching impact”, “The Little Prince” describes “what is truly important in life...that what is essential is invisible to the eye...that one sees clearly only with the heart.”

Featuring a local children’s chorus of 14 select singers, a stellar cast of principal singers from the New York City Opera, Houston Opera, and Boston Opera, with stage direction by Diana Stugger of Stratton and choreography by Ashley Hensel-Browning of Chester, this profes-sional production with orchestra will be presented at the Dorset Playhouse on Saturday January 9 at 4:00 p.m, with two addition-al performances at the Weston Playhouse on Saturday, January 16 at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $28 and $20 for adults, and $12 for ages 18 and under.

at 4 p.m. to hear “Tidings of Great Joy” — the holiday concert put on by The Tall Spire Ringers, the resident handbell choir of the church. Retirement Party at Equinox Terrace Executive Director Mary Jane Birkheimer, retiring after 20 years at

the Terrace, is given a grand send-off by residents, staff members, vol-unteers, and other guests, with a festive buffet lunch, music, and gifts. Mary Jane received a hat decorated with many buttons celebrating the joys of retirement, a giant greeting card bearing dozens of signatures and the legend “Take Us With You,” and blue-and-white china plates and a platter for her collection. Cook by the Book: Healthy Cooking Adventures with Yuval

Join Manchester Center resident Yuval Sela at the Mark Skinner Library on Thursday, January 14 at 6:30 p.m., for a “tasteful” culinary adventure. Sela’s presentation will feature easy to prepare recipes that are healthy and inexpensive. The program will emphasize recipes from “Back to Basics” by The Barefoot Contessa, with special attention paid to food containing Vitamin D, especially important in the winter months.

This presentation will include the demonstration of two recipes that everyone can sample.

Men Who Cook Event Goes Green

The annual Stratton Foundation fundraising event Men Who Cook goes green this year.The event traditionally falls on the Saturday of Martin Luther King weekend and each year guests are treated with a multitude of delicious dishes to sample. There has always been a large amount of waste involved with paper plates and plastic sil-verware. This year the commit-tee has decided to take a green approach and use real flatware and silverware and forgo the dis-posable. They will also be using cloth napkins rather than paper.

Knitting Hats for Preemies

During the month of January, Yarns for Your Soul will be con-tinuing with our charity knitting campaign, “Knit for Your Soul and Theirs” by knitting hats for premature babies. Finished proj-ects will be sent to Care Wear, an organization which provides newborns in neonatal intensive care units with hats and booties. Knitted hats are especially help-ful to these tiny babies for retain-ing body heat and relieving stress on their circulatory systems. Our donations will be going to the Neonatal Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Say Cheese! Celebration of the New Year

at Hildene got an early start, when on December 27, Hildene announced that the first Hildene Farm Cheese was ready for tast-ing. The fresh chevre is proof positive that the three long years of planning, building and working towards the goal of cheesemaking at the Rowland Agricultural Center at Hildene Farm had been well worth the wait.

The entire Hildene family invites the community to sample the new cheese at the Welcome Center during the weekend of January 9 and 10. The season for goat cheese production is near-ing an end as the season for kid-ding begins. While the barn will remain open for public viewing as cheese production with cow’s milk continues throughout the winter, Hildene Farm Cheese, cow or goat, aged or fresh, will not be available for purchase until summer 2010.

Haystack HustlersHaystack Hustler Seniors will

meet on January 12, at noon for a potluck lunch, at Pawlet Church. The program will be presented by Brad Tyler who will demonstrate his skills at Karate. He will also discuss and show us senior street safety and self defense. Bring a dish to share and an item for the Pawlet Food Shelf. We will also hold a 50/50 raffle.

Our second gathering in January will be January 26, at noon at Mettowee Community School for lunch followed by a presentation by the students. The students never cease to amaze us as we learn from each other. There will also be a brief discussion of future programs and activities.

Northshire Interfaith ChorusThe Northshire Interfaith Chorus will present its Winter concert, “A

Holiday Memory,” on Tuesday, January 12, at 7:00 p.m. at the United Church of Dorset in Dorset, Vermont, and again on January 13, at 7:00 p.m at the First Baptist Church in Manchester Center, Vermont. The first half of the concert will showcase works in the classical tradition by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Praetorius, Pinkham and others. Following a brief intermission, the second half of the program will consist of lighter fare, featuring such classics as “Let it Snow!”, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Silver Bells,” “Prayer from ‘Hansel and Gretel’” and “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” Featured soloists include Lindsay Dyett, Ruth Woodard, Judy Seltmann, Deb Lyon, Rev. Robert Carpenter and Jim Comar. Jeff Linebeck directs the chorus and Lynda Hobson is the pianist.

A suggested donation of $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors will be collected at the door. A “Meet the Chorus” reception will follow each concert. Please join us for this heartwarming tribute to the season.

Mads Tolling Quartet Comes to Vermont Lovers of jazz fusion in southern Vermont will be in for a rare

treat on January 21 and 23 when the acclaimed Mads Tolling Quartet (MTQ) will be giving performances in Dorset and Manchester. Led by violinist Mads Tolling, MTQ enjoys playing well-known pieces such as Thelonious Monk’s “Blue Monk” and Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog,” giving them a new twist, while staying true to the spirit of the original versions.

The distinctive Mads Tolling Quartet integrates the violin into a tra-ditional jazz combo. All four instruments play unconventional roles to make the music come to life.

The MTQ will be at Long Trail School in Dorset on Thursday, January 21 and at Maple Street School on Saturday, January 23. Both performances will be at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be $20 in advance or $30 at the door (18 years and younger $10 in advance, $15 at the door) and available from Manchester Music Festival 362-1956 or Northshire Bookstore. Northshire Nonprofit Network

The Northshire Nonprofit Network will be meeting on Friday, January 8, 8 a.m., at the Mark Skinner Library, 48 West Road, Manchester, Vermont.

Jen Peterson and Scott McArdle from the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF) will discuss the 2010 grant opportunities and how to apply online. Jen Peterson is Vice President of Grantmaking. She oversees the grantmaking programs and supports several Community Foundation fund-holders with their philanthrop-ic strategies. Ms. Peterson also worked for 13 years at Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE), most recently as their Annual Fund Director. In her career at PPNNE, she gained significant leadership and man-agement experience running their foundation and govern-ments grants efforts and over-seeing the development depart-ment. Scott McArdle is a Senior Philanthropic Advisor for the VCF and formerly served as the Foundation’s Vice President for Donor Relations. Previously, Mr. McArdle spent six years with the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps serving as Director of Development and Marketing and as a Program Director for a residential job training and edu-cation program for young adults.

This meeting is free and open to staff, board members, and volunteers from all nonprofit organizations in the region, as well as other interested people. Refreshments will be served. The meeting generally ends around 9:15 a.m., or so. SVAC Winter Members’ ExhibitionThe Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Annual Winter Members’

Exhibition opens in SVAC’s Yester House Gallery on Saturday, January 9; there will be a free opening party featuring hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and exhibiting artists in the galleries on opening day from 2 to 4 p.m.

A highlight of the Northshire’s winter art season, the Annual Winter Members’ Exhibition fills the ten galleries of the landmark Yester House Gallery with some 200 pieces of juried art.

...rose parade...Every year I watch the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s

Day. It was such a part of our lives when we lived in Pasadena.Very early in the morning we would load up the kids’ red wooden

wagon with a thermos of coffee mixed with brandy and egg nog, anoth-er thermos with hot chocolate and marshmallows, pack up a dozen Winchell’s Donuts, blankets and two folding chairs.

We put the wagon in our VW camper and the four of us headed down a few blocks from the bottom of the hill, parked the car, and searched for a good spot along the curb to sit and watch the parade. It was about 8 a.m. by the time we were all set and snuggled in our chairs and the kids sitting comfortably all bundled up in their wagon.

The parade wasn’t scheduled to begin to pass by our viewing area until 9 a.m. There were always breakdowns. Drivers of those beautiful floats were scrunched down in the bottom of the float, practically lying on their backs driving these massive works of art. We sat only a block from Victory Park adjacent to Pasadena High School, where the floats are available for several days for viewing. We could look up the hill behind us and see our house from where we were sitting.

Neighbors Bob and Anita Jones and their kids would come over for New Year’s Day festivities and potluck. We watched the Rose Bowl game while enjoying a few Tom & Jerry’s, wings, sandwiches, chips, salsa, cookies and cake.

Ah, the comfort of good memories...they keep me company while the dog snuggles next to me and I sip my coffee in the early dark hours of this New Year’s Day morning.

Public Skate and Bowl MakingA Public Skate and Bowl Making will be held on Sunday, January 10,

from 1:45-3:45 p.m. at Riley Rink at Hunter Park. Cost is $1 ages 13 and under, $2 ages 13 and up. (rentals not included, clay provided).

Families and individuals are welcome to skate and make bowls to benefit Empty Bowls at Long Trail School on May 1.

Town of Pawlet Raising FundsThe Town of Pawlet must raise at least $15,000 in order to match and

not lose ARRA grant funding (stimulus funds) and other grants total-ing over $120,000 to make the Town Hall compliant with the American with Disabilities Act so that all three floors will be accessible by install-ing an elevator, ramp and additional door.

Checks for the matching funds should be made payable to the Town of Pawlet with the wording “Town Hall renovation: elevator/ADA phase” in the memo field and sent to Judy Coolidge, Treasurer, Town of Pawlet, PO Box 128, Pawlet, VT 05761. The donations for the matching funds are made as conditional gifts to be used only if sufficient funds are raised to qualify as the matching funds.

On Tuesday, January 12, author and historian, Jason Emerson will make the first presentation of the 2010 Winter History Series, speak-ing on “Robert Todd Lincoln and His Parents.” The focus of this year’s series is the multifaceted personality and life of Hildene’s own Gilded Age gentleman and former turn of the century Manchester resident, Robert Todd Lincoln. As the only child of President Abraham Lincoln and wife, Mary, to survive to adulthood, Robert carried what was often seen as a burdensome name and legacy with him throughout his life. In this first talk, Emerson, an emerging Lincoln scholar who is currently completing a biography of Robert Todd Lincoln, will look more closely at Lincoln’s relationship with his famous parents, specifically examining his role as the president’s confidant during the Civil War, and explaining his belief that Mary Todd Lincoln was actually closer to her son Robert than she was to Abraham.

The presenter has written about both Robert’s father and his mother, penning “Lincoln, the Inventor” in 2009 and “The Madness of Mary Lincoln” in 2007. Emerson’s new biography of Robert Todd Lincoln will be published by Southern Illinois University Press in 2011. When asked about his decision to write a book about Abe Lincoln’s son, Emerson responded, “It is exciting to write a new, detailed book about Robert Todd Lincoln because every day, in the course of my research both at Hildene and elsewhere, I am finding unknown, unpublished information about RTL, his family, and all the events in his life. If

RTL weren’t overshadowed by his father, he would be studied by schoolchildren just for his own accomplishments.”

Held on the second Tuesday of each month, each Winter History Series talk will be held in the Beckwith Room at 7:00 p.m. The 45 minute presentation is fol-lowed by a 15 minute question and answer period and all are free and open to the public.

As I write this, the moon is almost full for the second time in December. It is usually called the Full Cold Moon or the Full Long Nights Moon but because it is the second full moon this month, we call it the Blue Moon. Two full moons appear in the same month approximately forty-two times in a century; thus the saying ‘once in a blue moon’, meaning some-thing rarely experienced. Two figures in the sky that are easy to find are planet Mars making quite a showing in the eastern sky with its brilliant orange color and the Big Dipper seen near the horizon as it moves across the northern sky.

The frigid weather brought

scores of birds to the feeders. The northern birds like the redpolls and siskins haven’t made much of a showing yet, but some of our summer birds like the White-throated and Song Sparrows are still lingering. The wind was blowing so hard a couple of days ago that the seeds were flying all over the yard.

The Bennington Christmas Bird Count was held on December 27. Even though the weather was frightful (rain, fog, low-hanging clouds), we man-aged to find fifty-five species of birds. Some of the outstanding finds were: Northern Pintail, Bald Eagle, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Belted Kingfisher, Northern. Flicker, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Carolina Wren, Eastern Bluebird,

American Robin, an Eastern Meadowlark and a Dickcissel.

Don Lucas from Arlington called to say he has been see-ing a black squirrel; a melanistic subspecies of the Eastern Grey Squirrel There is a small colony of them in Manchester so per-haps they are expanding their territory south. Is anyone else seeing them?

Northshire Artist Group to Exhibit at Dorset Library

Opening on Saturday, January 9, the Dorset Library will present a group show of local artists who paint together in a variety of media and styles.

The group has been working together since the spring of 2009 when Maynard Deen, artist, interior designer and owner of the Gallery/Studio on Main Street, Route 7A in Manchester offered his studio as a place where they could meet and work together. Deen had met sev-eral of the artists through SVAC workshops.

Members exhibiting are Dorothy Mulherren, Mary Cardel, Carole Tannen, and Muriel Roeth of Manchester, Marilyn Morrissey of Dorset, Connie Evans of Arlington, Maggie Murphy of Cambridge, and Jean Malone of Troy. The exhibit will feature

works by a number of artists in the group, and will continue through the month of January. In February the exhibit will change to allow the artists to show additional works All will be for sale, and the art sales will benefit the library.

Auditions Being Held

The Dorset Players’ will be holding auditions for their winter production, John Cariani’s whim-sical play “Almost Maine”, on Monday January 18 and Tuesday January 19 at 6:30 p.m. at The Dorset Playhouse on Cheney Road in Dorset, Vermont. Under the northern lights in the mythi-cal town of Almost, Maine the residents fall in and out of love in unexpected and often hilari-ous ways.The upcoming pro-duction will not be limited to a cast of four but will pull together the strongest cast possible from those auditioning. Actors ranging in age from sixteen to mid-for-ties are invited to audition. Auditions for Missoula Children’s Theatre production of

‘Jack and the Beanstalk’The Dorset Players’ are delighted to announce that the Missoula

Children’s Theatre Company will be back to present “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Auditions will be held on Monday January 18 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Dorset Playhouse. Amoung the roles to be cast are Jack, Mother, Milky White, the Magic Harp, Farmers, Merchants, The Giant, Jill, Circus Performers and Magic Beans. Students grades kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to audition. Those auditioning should arrive by 4:00 p.m. and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the older cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immedi-ately following the audition from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This is a group audition so no advanced preparation is necessary. MCT Tour Actor/Directors will conduct rehearsals throughout the week from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. each day. “Jack and the Beanstalk” will be presented on Saturday January 23 at the Dorset Playhouse.
