Vern: Tour USS Iowa CONTINUED Thu 8/28/2014 12:08 PM

After leaving the flag bridge, then headed up to the captain’s bridge. As aboard USS Hornet, the flag bridge

is a deck lower than the captain’s bridge.

Entrance to the bridge armored conning tower, and the engine order telegraph and helm inside

Forward of the armored compartment where the engine order telegraph and helm are is the captain’s bridge

which has a good forward view. It is interesting that the captain’s chair is on the other side of the bridge

than the captain’s chair aboard USS Hornet. Aboard USS Hornet, the flight deck is to the port of the bridge.

The top of the conning tower and the view from there. Judging by the gyro compass repeater and other

equipment the commanding officer and / or the officer of the deck can command the ship from here.

Inside the round building near the bow is a fire boat, the bow is pointing to the Los Angeles Maritime

Museum, and Ports O’ Call Village is where the boats are.

In the photo ABOVE is a CIWS and the radar gun director for the port 5 inch guns;

and on the photo BELOW shows chaff launchers.

Aboard USS Iowa are two types of missiles, Above is a Tomahawk launcher

Below is a Harpoon launcher.

Both types of missiles are aboard our ships currently.

The aft 16 inch triple turret.

Departed USS Iowa approximately 2:10 PM. Took a slightly different route back to Ports O’ Call Village. Saw

a ship’s mast and decided to investigate.

Saw the mast and anchors of USS Los Angeles,

and a 16 inch gun and a shell from USS New Jersey, a sister ship of USS Iowa.

It was a mistake to turn USS Wisconsin and USS Iowa into museum ships.

The Iowa class battleship is unequal in its ability to provide naval gunfire support.

21st Century Battleships

Not only do we need new light and heavy cruisers (the current light cruisers should be called cruisers and

not “destroyers” and they need more guns and missiles), we also need more battleships; battleships with

modernized 16 and 5 inch guns, CIWS or 40 mm, VLS silos for SM, Tomahawk, and Evolved Sea Sparrow),

and launchers for RAM.

Made it back to my car in the Ports O’ Call Village parking lot at 2:50 PM, picked up a copy of Without

Remorse by Tom Clancy, and found a place to read. Was in no condition to tour SS Lane Victory. During

the walk, people who I would normally be walking faster than were walking faster than me. Had dinner at

Ports O’ Call Village consisting of two tacos and a soft drink.

After dinner, headed South for some exploration.
