Personal Property Security, by Officer Truscott, PSL

An unfortunate part of our society is theft. While

stealing is wrong in itself, prevention is the number

one way to avoid going through this unfortunate

circumstance. As we begin our school year, I

would like to take time to remind parents to

encourage and stress to their students the

importance of locking up valuables while at school.

We often see cell phones, IPODs, and other

valuables left unattended around the school.

Particularly in the gym locker rooms items are left

in bags and unsecured. Unsecured items create

opportunities for those that are looking to take

things that are not theirs.

Please help prevent thefts by securing your

personal items if they are not going to be directly in

your pocket. Also please encourage students to not

keep these items in their backpacks especially in the

outer mesh pockets as they invite thieves to take them

when out in plain view.

I also ask that you take the time to write down the

Make, Model and Serial Number of all valuables,

especially electronic devices, which will be brought to

school. Having these items plays a critical role in the

Police Department’s ability to track down, locate and

return these items to their rightful owners.

Thank you for time, and remember prevention is the

number one w ay to combat thefts.

2013 PSAT REGISTRATION, by Theresa Brown, Counselor

The PSAT/NMSQT will be given at VAHS on Saturday, October 19th in the K-Wing

beginning at 8:00 a.m. Letters are being mailed to all sophomores and juniors the

week of September, 16th. This letter will include a registration form to be turned in to

the Student Services office, along with the designated fee of $20.00. Fee waivers are

available for those who qualify. When students register they will also be given an

official guide to the PSAT/NMSQT. Additionally, your child received information on

how to register via his/her school email account.

The PSAT/NMSQT is a college preparatory test that uses a similar format and scoring

system as the SAT, a commonly required college admissions test. The PSAT/NMSQT is

designed for juniors, however sophomores who are enrolled in advanced

coursework such as Advanced Algebra, may elect to take the test.

The PSAT/NMSQT is used as a qualifier for National Merit Scholarships and additional

scholarship services, but only scores

posted by juniors qualify. Sophomores

who score well on the test should

retake the test their junior year in order

to qualify for such scholarships.

Additional information can be found at

the College Board website:

www.collegeboard.org

Student Council Kicks Off, by Katie Goetz and Lilli Pankratz

Student Council is off to another passionate start this

year! We began planning for the Homecoming dance

during our summer meeting, and we’ve started making

plans for some of the things that we hope to accomplish

this year. We will be collaborating with the middle

school student councils, and we hope to continue the “I

Won’t Stand For…” campaign to foster a greater sense

of acceptance, tolerance, and community throughout

the Verona School District. We look forward to another

great year, and we have a wonderful council full of

leaders to help make that happen!

This year’s Homecoming dance theme was Electric

Explosion. The gym was decorated accordingly with neon paint and glow sticks. A dress drive was held

to provide gently used dresses to low-income students; over thirty dresses were donated to our cause!

Leading up to the dance and the football game was the traditional dress-up week. Monday was

Superhero day, followed by Transformation Tuesday (where students were encouraged to dress as they

did in middle school), and “When I Grow Up…” Wednesday. Thursday was Class Color day with

freshmen in green, sophomores in red, juniors in blue, and seniors in togas. Friday was Spirit Day in

anticipation for the homecoming football game. Girls were also encouraged to play football in the spirit

of Homecoming during the annual Powderpuff competition.

Our executive board for this year is as follows. A new executive board position, Environmental Leader,

IT'S TIME FOR PROM! By Sarah Greenlaw, Prom Advisor

A meeting for parents interested in working on the 2014 Junior Prom will

be held on October 7 from 6:30- 7:45 p.m. in the KITC located in the K-

wing building. Contact: Sarah Greenlaw at [email protected].

On March 24, 2013, after months of preparation, twenty eight Verona

Area High Schools students embarked on the trip of a lifetime to

France with their French teachers Ms. Shari Thompson and Ms.

Jennifer Wolfe. The group landed in Paris and spent 3 days getting to

know the capital city visiting sites such as the Arc de Triomphe, Sacré

Coeur, the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and Notre Dame.

Students were able to use their French in restaurants, buying crêpes on

the streets and shopping for souvenirs. Said Junior Kat Billings, “the

Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d’Orsay were incredible, but

the museum itself is a work of art, too.” On the third day, the students

were taken to meet their French families about an hour outside of Paris

in the town of Chartres, famous for its 12th century cathedral. Many

students stated that this was the best part of the trip. Senior Britta

Pigorsch said, “Staying with a family opened my eyes to how people

you meet can change your life forever.” While staying with French

families students had the opportunity to attend French high school and

many of the French families took their “correspondant américain” to

sites all over France such as Versailles, the D-Day beaches and the

chateaux of the Loire Valley. After a busy five days with their families

the Verona students were reunited and returned to Paris where they

topped off their trip with dinner on the Eiffel Tower. Junior Tatum

Teskey commented, “We had so many common experiences to share, it

was like we were one big family”.

Yearbooks for $ale Full Color Yearbook

with Your Name on the Cover

If you have not yet had an opportunity to purchase your 2013-2014 Yearbook, this is the time to do so! If you purchase a yearbook by Tuesday, October 8th, you are guaranteed to have your name on the full color yearbook. The yearbook staff works very hard to ensure that we have great coverage of all activities throughout the year and we capture your wonderful high school memories. In addition, we always invite and welcome both students and parents to submit photos so that all students are represented.

Please note, due to the cost of the book, and the number of opportunities made available to students to purchase a book, we will not be ordering many “extras” for resale at the end of the year. The extra books purchased are intended for new students who arrive to our school after the deadline and would still like to purchase a book.

 Sincerely The Yearbook Staff Rita A. Mortenson (845-4445) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

October 2013 VAHS Wildcats

VAHS OFFERS EXTENDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, by Mindy Grant, Learning Resource Coordinator

Verona Area High School is pleased to introduce Extended Learning

Opportunities (ELO) during the 2013-2014 school year.

We believe that learning is a continuous, lifelong process. However, our

traditional grading terms require teachers to assign grades every nine weeks.

In an effort to reconcile this difference, Verona Area High School will be

offering Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO). The ELO program focuses on

helping students earn credits so that they stay “on track” for graduation.

We will be offering this Extended Learning Opportunity for students taking

traditionally 9th and 10th grade core classes such as English 9 and 10, U. S. and

World History, ALEKS math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, or Geometry, and Integrated

Science and Biology, who, at the end of a quarter, have earned a failing

grade. As the ELO program continues to develop, there may be more

extended learning opportunities available in the future. To be invited to

participate during ELO, students must have attended class regularly and

participated in the learning activities during the quarter. Teachers invite

students who they believe can successfully show proficiency in required

knowledge, skills, and processes with just a few more hours of further practice

with up to 16 hours of additional learning. Students who can successfully show

proficiency by the end of ELO will earn a passing grade to replace a failing

one that was earned earlier.

Extended Learning Opportunities will run after school and Saturday mornings

for two weeks closely following the end of each quarter. Transportation will be

provided. Look for communication from your student’s teachers as to whether

this opportunity is recommended for your student.

We are excited for the opportunity to further meet the

needs of all students and to support the continuous

process that is learning!

SUMMER LEARNINGThis summer, over 100 Verona Area School District staff members participated in

summer workshops and grad classes held at VASD. Staff learned new and innovative ideas that would be beneficial to their curriculum. Some of the technology related courses included a summer laptop program, SMARTBoard training, Google training, digital content - learning how to create content for the web or iTunes U, the flipped classroom and more!

Some of our very own district staff members were the “professors” for these courses.

2013 Y E A R B O O K P R O D U C T I O N FALL

By Madelyn VogelOn Thursday, September 12, the Verona Area High School yearbook staff spent the morning with their partner class at Glacier Edge Elementary School! The 22 high schoolers, advised by Rita Mortenson, paired up with Amy Klubertanz's second grade class to

work on an art project connected to an app called Colar Mix 3D coloring book to bring drawings to life! The app uses scanning technology to read the drawing and transform it into 3D objects on screen. These two classes have been collaborating for a year now, and this is one of several projects they

have worked on together. Over the course of the year, they will work together on other various ventures, including the second graders taking a field trip to the high school. Both classes benefit greatly from these experiences, and always love the opportunity to work together!

Yearbook Students Build Connections!

STUDENTS COLORED THEIR DOTS AND THEN USED AN APP TO TRANSFORM IT INTO A 3D OBJECT.
