Reminders1. Knowledge-Thecrewchiefmustbeknowledgeableintuningthemotorcontrollerandsettingup
themechanicalaspectsofthekart.Theymustknowhoweverythingworks.Havingtheproperknowledgeallowsthecrewchieftomakedecisionsonwhatadjustmentstomaketothekartassituationsarise.Ifbeingacrewmemberwereaseasyassimplysaying"changetheaxlesprockettoasmallerteethnumber"or"weneedtogodownapoundofairintherightrear"thenanybodycoulddoit.Thekeyistounderstandwhatimpactthoseadjustmentswillmake,whytheywillmakethatimpact,andhowitwillaffecttherestofthecarssetup.
2. Leadership-Whencomparedtoothersports,acrewchiefistheequivalenttoamanagerinbaseballortheheadcoachinfootball.Notonlydotheymakeallofthedecisionsinvolvingstrategy,buttheyhavetobetheemotionalleaderforboththedriveraswellasthepitcrew.Whenadversitystrikes,thecrewchiefistheonewhohastokeepeveryonecalm.Moreoftenthannot,youwillhearacrewchieftrytoencouragetheteamtoperformbetteronthenexttrialasopposedtoblastingthemforajobpoorlydone.
3. Event/PitStrategy-WhatdoyoudoafterthatfinaltrialrunbeforeQualification?WhatdoyoudoafterQualifying?Howlongtoyouallowthebatteriestocharge?Thesearethequestionsthatthecrewchiefmustanswer.Attheendoftheday,thestrategythatacrewchiefchoosestouseiseithergoingtomakehimintotheheroorthescapegoat.Whileitisusuallythelastracethatgetspeopletalking,everysteprequiredtogetthereinvolvesimportantdecisions.Doyouoptformoretorqueoutofturnsandgiveupstraightwayspeed?Doyouflirtwithgoingoverpowerandruntheriskofbeingflagged?Shouldwejustleaveeverythingatdefaultsettingsandfocusongivingthedriverlaptimebeforetherace?Theseareallquestionsthatacrewchiefhastoaskthemselfbeforeanyevent.Andassoonasoneeventstopiscomplete,preparationsforthenextonearealreadyunderway.
4. Communication-Goodcommunicationbetweenadriverandtheircrewchiefiscritical.Whetherthecrewchiefistryingtocalmthedriverdownafteranon-trackincident,orwhetherthetwoarejustdiscussingracestrategy,itisvitalthattheybeonthesamepage.Whiletheofficialtitleiscrewchief,themaninthatpositionmustalsowaremanyotherhats.Attimestheyneedtoactthepartofacheerleader,encouragingtheirdriverthattheycanworktheirwaybacktothefrontofthefield,andtojust"getitbackonekartatatime."Othertimesheneedstobethecalminginfluenceinthedriver'searwhenthingsreallygobad.Thecommunicationdoesn'tjustpertaintothedrivereither.Whetherdiscussingmotorcontrollersetupbackatthe“garage”orpitstrategywithhiscrew,thecrewchiefmustbeabletohaveclearcommunicationwitheverymemberthatispartofhisteamsothateveryonecanbeonthesamepageallthroughoutanevent.
5. NervesofSteel-Thereisagreatinspirationalquotethatsays"inordertosucceedyoumustfirstbewillingtofail."Thatisespeciallytrueforacrewchief.Therehasneverbeenacrewchiefthatwentundefeated.Duringeveryeventallbutonecrewchiefsfailtowin,butthatdoesn'tstopthemfromcontinuingtosetupkartsormakethetoughcalls.Everyracecanultimatelycomedowntoonedecisionthatacrewchiefmakes.Eachdecisioncanfeellikeahigh-stakesgamble.Buttosucceedyoucan'tbeafraidofmakingthewrongdecision.Ittakessomeprettythickskintobeabletohandlecriticism,andawholebunchofnervestoknowthateverycallyoumakecouldbeyourlastoneasacrewchiefifitdoesn'tbringyourdriverandteamsuccess.
