GTA MAINLINE2015-2016Greater Toronto, ONMichels constructed a 49.6km natural gas pipeline in Toronto, Ontario. The project was completed in four sections.Spread 1: 7.6km of NPS 36 pipeline and crossings in dense urban area with restricted and limited workspace. Spreads 2, 3 and 4: Approximately 42km of pipeline (NPS 42 and 36) in a heavily utilized transportation, infrastructure and hydroelectric corridor. Trenchless installations: The project included 16 Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) and two Direct Pipe crossings. In total, 63 major road crossings were installed using trenchless methods. No roads were open cut. The pipeline crossed a total of 520 buried utilities. Michels precision resulted in receipt of the Excavator of the Year Award from the Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance for zero damages or contacts to buried infrastructure.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

16TH AVENUE TRUNK SEWER REHABILITATION PILOT STUDY2016-2017Markham, ONMichels was selected by the owner to perform a pilot study to rehabilitate a deteriorating segment of 2,642mm diameter sanitary sewer, approximately 30m long. The project involved injection grouting point repairs to stop groundwater leaking and infiltration at several pipe joints as well as the application of GeoSpray, a spray-on fibre reinforced geopolymer mortar lining system manufactured by Milliken Infrastructure Solutions, LLC to the interior sewer walls. Installations took place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. when water usage was low, and required the development of new processes to install the materials in an efficient manner. Following successful completion of the pilot study, Michels was selected to use the same process on an additional 1.5km of 2,642mm sanitary sewer main.

PIPE REHABILITATIONSPRAYED-IN-PLACE PIPE (SIPP) LINING Epoxy and polymer systems are used to prevent breaks, restore integrity and create fully structural pipes within host pipes. SIPP is effective for the trenchless rehabilitation of large-diameter storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, manholes and other infrastructure of all shapes, bends, curves and angles.

CURED-IN-PLACE PIPE (CIPP) LINING Trenchlessly installing jointless lining systems from manhole to manhole add 50 years of design life to pipes spanning from 6 to 100 inches in diameter. Suitable for sewer mains, water mains and pressure pipes, liners are installed by air or water inversion, and cured with steam, water or UV light.
