I think that they made a large contribution to us in many ways. Among other things, Ken was a master at pastoral care and initiated programs designed to expose All Saints to many who did not know that we exist. He counseled us and at times pushed us to accomplish ideas that could have just lain dormant. At the same time Shirley with her smooth personality and musical background helped ground us and make us feel welcome in our own Church. I believe that God smiled on us when Ken decided to do a year and a month of interim with us after retiring from Saint Chris- topher’s in High Point and I think that Ken is equally thankful in spite of all the hard work! So now what is in store for us??? Canon Ernest Graham visited us from the diocese on Sunday, August 7 th and conducted services. He has been in Greensboro with the diocese since August 2015 and has had several meetings with your vestry. Following Canon Graham, we will contract for “supply” priests for August 14 th and 21 st to fill in until our new permanent priest begins her tenure. For those of you who have not heard, our Search Committee, after a very long and grueling year, has selected our own Reverend Paula Rachal to be our permanent priest. Paula worked for All Saints approximately 13 years ago as assistant to Rever- end Warren Pittman but had to seek other employment when we could not afford to carry two priests. She is a very capable priest who has continued to attend All Saints and has continued to serve our members without pay when pastoral care was needed that Rev. Pittman could not cover. In the meantime, she continued to expand her role of serving others at the Servant Center in several capacities keying on our homeless and injured veterans. This service counsels and trains the homeless veterans, finds jobs for those that can work and pro- vides housing and food during and after rehabilitation. Paula, among other things, acts as Chaplain for the men and works to help them receive the benefits they are en- titled to from the V.A. I am very excited to be able to introduce Paula as our new permanent Rector. I be- lieve that we are breaking new ground with a permanent woman priest who knows us well and has many ideas for improvements for All Saints. Please extend a very warm All Saints welcome to Paula Rachal. Her official starting date will be on Mon- day, August 22 nd and the first Sunday worship that she conducts will be on August 28. HELLO ALL SAINTS… It was a bitter sweet good bye to the Reverend Ken Kroohs and his wife Shirley as they made quite an impression on All Saints during Ken’s tenure as our interim priest. I believe that God smiled on us when Ken decided to do a year and a month of interim with us after retiring from Saint Chris-topher’s in High Point and I think that Ken is equally thankful in spite of all the hard work!

So now what is in store for us??? Canon Ernest Graham visited us from the diocese on Sunday, August 7th and conducted services. He has been in Greensboro with the diocese since August 2015 and has had several meetings with your vestry. Following Canon Graham, we will contract for “supply” priests for August 14th and 21st to fill in until our new permanent priest begins her tenure.

For those of you who have not heard, our Search Committee, after a very long and grueling year, has selected our own Reverend Paula Rachal to be our permanent priest. Paula worked for All Saints approximately 13 years ago as assistant to Rever-end Warren Pittman but had to seek other employment when we could not afford to carry two priests.

This service counsels and trains the homeless veterans, finds jobs for those that can work and pro-vides housing and food during and after rehabilitation. Paula, among other things, acts as Chaplain for the men and works to help them receive the benefits they are en-titled to from the V.A.

I am very excited to be able to introduce Paula as our new permanent Rector. I be-lieve that we are breaking new ground with a permanent woman priest who knows us well and has many ideas for improvements for All Saints. Please extend a very warm All Saints welcome to Paula Rachal. Her official starting date will be on Mon-day, August 22nd and the first Sunday worship that she conducts will be on August 28.

Garden of Eatin’… A work in progress The community garden at All Saints delivered more than 100 pounds of vegetables to organizations that provide food for Greensboro residents in need this summer. This first season has been a learning experience. Planning for the fall season began at a meeting last week.

The Garden Steering Committee agrees that the summer garden presented challeng-es – a heat wave with not much rain, hungry rabbits, and crows that attacked toma-toes as they began to turn red, diseased squash plants, etc. Thanks go to parishion-ers who faithfully watered and weeded, harvested the crops, and delivered them to

drop-off distribution sites. The cucum-ber bed has provided the biggest yield, followed by peppers and squash. Work-ers are eyeing the healthy tomato plants and hoping to outsmart the birds this month.

To prepare for fall, volunteers are needed for a work day Saturday, August 20, from 9 to 12. We will clear the beds, enrich the soil, and plant col-lards, onions, spinach and turnips, all cool-weather crops. Workers will have plenty of bottled water all morning, followed by free pizza at noon.

Tutor One Child – Change Two Lives

In the summer of 2016, approximately 7,400 students in grades 1-3 were invited to a end summer school because they were iden -fied as needing extra help in reading, wri ng and spelling. Of the 7,400 invited, approximately 2, 800 a ended. Summer school lasted only 15 days, so these children and those who could not a end for various reasons need our help.

The Augus ne Literacy Project/Guilford County, NC (ALP/GCNC) seeks to support these children with free tutoring lessons with a volunteer tutor who is trained in systema c reading strategies that directly support the work being done in the GCS classrooms. Tutors are trained and provided with appropriate materials to directly support each child’s needs.

Volunteers work with one child, twice weekly, a er school and at the child’s school. Presently ALP/GCNC works with children at Oak Hill Elementary and Guilford Elementary schools.

The next training will be held beginning September 6-9 and 12-15 at All Saints Episcopal Church from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. The train-ing not only provides an introduc on to the materials and procedures, but offers opportuni es to prac ce with a child, before begin-ning actual tutoring.

For more informa on about the program and how to become an ALP tutor, visit our website at alpguilfordnc.weebly.com or contact us at [email protected].

You can also contact one of our tutors, Nancy Poulos, a member of St. Barnabas.

A Prayer for the Bishop Search

Most gracious God, who gave your only Son to be our Good Shepherd: Look favorably upon your Church, and guide the hearts and minds of those who shall choose a bishop to be a pas-tor to this Diocese, that we may receive a faith-ful leader, who will go with us out in the world, making disciples who make a differ-ence; and nurture in your servants who wrestle with this call a spirit of wisdom and confi-dence, joy and humility; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
