Introduction For students wishing to undertake Vocational Education and Training (VET) studies at Thomas Carr College, this Subject Selection Information will provide the student and their families with the information necessary to make an informed decision. Thomas Carr College looks to ensure that students can engage in pathways that suit their interests in the Senior School. VET is a growing part of the College curriculum. Participation in a VET program whilst at school, allows students to learn about industry, employment pathways and gain skills that are relevant to the needs of industry. By successfully completing the program, they can to add to their VCE or VCAL certificates and receive additional qualifications. Some VET courses can contribute a study score to the students’ ATAR. Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETIS) VETIS or VET is a great opportunity to get a head start on their chosen career path. Students attain industry theory and practical skills. VET courses can assist students in getting into further tertiary studies, apprenticeships or employment in their industry. Benefits for VCE students:

Can directly contribute to a student’s ATAR score

Gain familiarity in the workplace and employability skills

Provides a nationally recognised qualification

Can provide credit towards higher tertiary qualifications For VCE students there are three types of VETIS courses:

Block credit: gives students credits at Unit 1, 2, 3 and/ or 4 levels

VET courses that contribute block credit, as well as 10% to their ATAR score1

Scored VET courses. Students complete a Unit 1-4 sequence and sit an examination at the end of two years. They receive a score out of 50, which directly contributes to their ATAR if it is one of their top four subjects.

Contributes hours towards their VCAL credits (at least 2 credits per year)

Hands on applied learning, with a structured workplace learning requirement. This gives students industry experience making them more employable

External VET Courses Students who are interested in fields outside of the ones listed in the previous table can investigate courses with external providers such as Kangan, TAFE, The Gordon, Victoria University, etc. Students and parent/guardians will need to organise a meeting with the VET/VCAL Co-ordinator and a Careers Advisor to determine accessibility and costs, along with how to enrol. Please note that external courses attract higher Tuition Fee, as well as Ancillary fees and Materials costs. Costs range from $1300 to $3500 per year and will be payable in the first half of the year. Please remember that if the student exits the VETIS course or the College after the deadline of Friday February 28 2020, families will be charged the full amount for the course.

Important Information

Application Process for VET Students enrolling in new courses Students are to complete the following process:

Complete the online subject selection form and select their chosen VET course

A Care Monkey form will be sent out to successful applicants with additional information for enrolment

Students must register for a USI - usi.gov.au

The Online Enrolment Form must be completed in full, by the due date. Failure to do so will result in the student being withdrawn from the course

Please be aware that students will not be able to apply for mid-year enrolments into VET courses

Students enrolling in VET courses will need to complete several enrolments, one with Thomas Carr, one with Cluster, one with the RTO

Students continuing into second year of VET courses:

Complete the online subject selection form and select their chosen VET course

How are fees determined Thomas Carr College’s external and cluster-based VET courses are delivered by various RTOs including Victoria University (VU), RMIT, Kangan, TAFE and The Gordon. These institutions determine the charges for each course. Thomas Carr College enters into an Agreement with the provider in February of each year and once executed, the full course costs are payable.

There is a subsidy from the Catholic Education Office that is applied to all VET, which is dependent on a range of expectations, a breach of which will result in the subsidy being withdrawn and the full cost of the VETIS course being passed on to families. Cluster based VET courses are subsided by the College, so Thomas Carr students will only need to pay a flat fee, along with any additional material or ancillary fee each year the student is enrolled in the course. In addition to the tuition fee charged by the RTO, some courses require students to pay for materials, protective clothing/uniform and resources. These types of charges include textbooks, resource booklet, IT charges, make-up kits, art supplies, dance shoes etc. Some RTOs will provide these at the start of the year and parents will receive an invoice through Thomas Carr College’s Business Office. Other RTOs will provide students with a materials list that will need to be purchased by parents.

VET Expectations For all VETIS Courses there is a requirement that students successfully complete the course work and achieve a 90% attendance rate. Most VETIS subjects are one day per week and all Year 10 and VCE VET

students will miss regular classes timetabled on their VET day. Students in Year 10 and VCE will be allocated study periods to assist them staying on top of their workload. Students are responsible for liaising with teachers and keeping their normal class work up to date. All absences require a medical certificate. Most of the VET courses available to students run on Wednesday afternoon. Due to limited trainers, some VETIS Courses run on Fridays as well. As students will be representing that College during VET classes, all student policies apply. Students can be withdrawn from VET courses if there is a significant concern, ongoing behaviour issue, safety issues, etc.

Dress Code Students are expected to attend external secondary schools in their full Thomas Carr summer/ winter uniform. VET Sport and Recreation students are to wear their Thomas Carr PE uniform. If students are required to wear work wear, facilities have been provided for students to change once they are within the school. Failure to wear the Thomas Carr uniform will result in the student being unable to enter the school grounds. For external providers like TAFEs, students will need to comply with the TAFEs clothing

policies. Students participating in trade courses, should be wearing clothing outlined in information (track pants are not permitted) sent out later in the year to successful applicants. They are required to wear a Thomas Carr Blazer or Jacket over the top of the trade uniform, if it takes place at a Trade Centre in a secondary school. Not all schools have facilities available to change in. They must change out of their Thomas Carr uniform to participate in Prac Classes.

VET Assessment When selecting a VET course, it is important to remember that all courses will have assessments. Some assessments are hands on, other are presentation, tests, workbooks, examinations etc. Students are expected to participate in all assessment to achieve a satisfactory result. VET courses that attract a Study Score are academic courses and require significant theory. These courses will also require students to sit the GAT examination and an end of year performance or theory examination, in the year that scored assessment takes place (usually second year). All courses have Occupation Health and Safety theory components.

External VET Locations VET courses provided by Victoria University TAFE sector are held at either the King Street, Footscray Park, Sunshine or Werribee campuses. VET courses provided by RMIT are delivered at their City Campus. Kangan TAFE delivers their VET courses at Docklands, Broadmeadows, Sunshine and Melbourne. The Gordon deliver some courses in Geelong and others at new Wyndham locations. William Angliss VET courses are in Melbourne CBD. Box Hill delivers at their city campus; however, there are days when you may need to attend their Elgin or Box Hill campus.

Wyndham Cluster The Wyndham Cluster is made up of several secondary Colleges within the Wyndham area: Thomas Carr College, The Grange P-12 College, Wyndham Central College, Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, Werribee Secondary College, Manor Lakes College, Mount St Joseph’s Girls College, Al-Taqwa College, Good News Lutheran College, Heathdale Christian College, Tarneit College and Mackillop College. Each school offers a selection of VET courses to the cluster, so that students can access a larger variety of courses at a subsided rate.

Leaving School grounds Students, who are completing VET courses at Thomas Carr College, are not permitted to leave College grounds before VET courses start. Students wishing to access Canteen facilities must complete a lunch order through the canteen and state what time they will be collecting order. Students attending external secondary colleges are not permitted to leave the College’s grounds once they have arrived by bus or transport, most schools have some type of canteen facilities. If canteen facilities are unavailable, students will need to bring their own lunch.

Study Hall

Students undertaking a VET course, will be allocated to a Study Hall. Students are required to attend the location noted on their timetable. This time is provided to allow students time to catch of any time missed due to VET or Travel to VET. Students are not allowed to leave early.

Cluster bus A bus is provided to assist students getting to their Cluster and Trade VET courses for a small fee. Buses run on a loop on Wednesdays and Fridays to ensure students get to classes on time. The bus will drop students at the location for all cluster courses except Horticulture and AM VET courses, every week during the School Term. The timetable will be available at the beginning of the year. Students will need to organise

their own way home from VET courses due to the varied finish times. VET courses that run during the holidays will need to make their own way to and from the courses. If you would like to use the Cluster VET bus, a CareMonkey notification will be sent out later in the year with further information regarding timetables and fee.

Early Withdrawal from Courses If a student exits a course or Thomas Carr College after the TAFE and Cluster deadline of Friday February 28 2020, families will be invoiced for the full tuition amount charged to the school.

Any subsides given by the Cluster and the College will no longer be applicable (Cluster courses full costs range from $1700 to $3000 prior to subsidy). Any College allowance applied for studying off site will also be withdrawn.

Structure Workplace Learning Students involved in VCAL and some VET courses are required to complete a Structured Workplace Learning within their chosen industry. Similar to the Work Experience program, students can expect to receive a minimum of $5 per day (students involved in employment with not for profits/ hospitals/ schools etc. will not receive payment). VCAL students will be completing their placements on Thursdays, while Year 10/ VCE students will need to complete their placements during the holidays.

Some VET courses have a minimum number of hours that need to be completed for their SWL (approximately 40- 100 hours per year), these hours are connected to Units of work, if a student does not complete the hours, they will not be deemed competent in that Unit of work.

Year 11 VCAL students undertaking a full VCAL program are expected to participate in two one week blocks at the end of semester.

Year 11 VCAL students choosing to commit to a year-long SWL experience, must have paperwork completed before Head Start in 2019. Students will need to complete approximately 18 days per semester. Due to the legislation restrictions, students will need to work with a new employer every 20 days completed.

Year 12 VCAL students need to undertake a minimum of 20 days of SWL, every Thursday during school terms.

Students should look independently for placements using family networks, prior work experience connections or the SWL portal. If students are struggling to find a placement, they need to contact the Careers team or the VCAL VET Co-ordinator.

As part of the current government requirements for SWL, students are not permitted to work more than 20 days with the same employer. An exemption can be made only if there is a potential SBAT or Apprenticeship opportunity available at the end of that time. Ideally, students should seek a range of experiences with different employers during their time in VCAL.

Structure Workplace Learning Recognition

Students who are completing a VCE VET Certificate can elect to participate in the SWL Recognition program. This is designed to give students an additional credit towards their VCAL program after the completion of 80 hours of SWL in a relevant industry connected to their course.

Students are to complete a minimum of 80 hours and the supplied Workplace Learning Record (WLR) to a satisfactory standard, along with a log book to track their hours

Students can complete the 80 hours over more than one year

Students who complete multiple blocks of 80 hours, can be eligible for up 3 units of credit per VET course and a total of 4 credits if doing more than one VET course

SWL R will be introduced and monitored in WRS classes for VCAL students, with final assessment completed by the VCAL VET Co-ordinator. VCE students, who wish to participate, should contact the VCAL VET Co-ordinator by the beginning of Lenten Term, 2020.

School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships

School Based Apprenticeships or Traineeships in Victoria involve the student undertaking the VCE or VCAL, as well as being employed part time and training under the following arrangements: At Thomas Carr, students:

Should be undertaking VCAL, as this program is able to accommodate the time off required from school

Have paid employment under an Industrial Agreement that recognises School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Have a training contract that includes a nationally recognised qualification and duration of training to be undertaken. This contract must be registered with Skills Victoria

Have a training plan and be signed by an RTO within two months of commencement of the School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship

Undertake training over two years at an average of 13 hours per week for employment and training. The 13 hours should be divided into at least 7 hours of employment and 6 hours of training per week, which may be averaged over three periods of four months in each year of the program

Spend at least one timetabled day during the normal school week on the job or in training In effect, the employer will be either:

Covered by an Award with suitable provisions

Party to a Workplace Agreement, including Individual Transitional Employment Agreements, Australian Workplace Agreements, Collective Agreements or Pre-reform Certified Agreements

Covered by the minimum terms and conditions of Part 21 of the Workplace Relations Act School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in the following industry areas have been approved by industry bodies and VCAA for students undertaking the VCE:

Some SBATs have minimal to no costs associated with training. However, students who are eligible for Health Care Cards should make sure it is available at enrolment in the course.

Part Time Apprenticeships and Traineeships Students who undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship that is not integrated into their learning program and study timetable will be undertaking part time apprenticeships or traineeships. This type of arrangement will still provide credit for VCE or VCAL if it is recorded on VASS. This is called Block Credit Recognition. However, a part time traineeship or apprenticeship does not replace any subject requirement at Thomas Carr College

Course Description Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance provides students with the knowledge and skills that will enhance their employment prospects in the Health industry. These qualifications cover workers who provide assistance to allied health professionals and other health professionals with the care of clients.

Course Description This course will equip you with skills and knowledge to care for animals in a range of environments. Major areas of study include working in the animal care industry, assisting with general care of animals, first aid for animals, Veterinary reception duties, daily clinic routines and assisting with surgery preparations. The course will also develop your skills to provide information on animal welfare products and services to the public.

Certificate II Applied Fashion Design Technology Contribution to VCE: Unit 1-4+ 10%

Course Description Thomas Carr College are proud to introduce VCE VET Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design & Technology. The college has all the essential facilities and equipment to complete the 2-year course. To provide students with the knowledge, skills and competency that will enhance their employment opportunities within the textiles, fashion and clothing related industries. This course can also develop students’ skills to support their portfolio development in Product, Design and Technology (Textiles).

The Certificate II is typically completed over two years with VCE credits at Units 1 - 4.

Pathways: There are a multitude of courses at diploma, advanced diploma and Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design. In addition, there is a Certificate III in design also available to secondary

Course Description Certificate II in Dance aims to provide students with the technical and performance skills to begin the process of establishing a career in the entertainment industry. Students will learn the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to participate in a variety of dance routines. Units 1 and 2 of the program include developing basic levels of physical condition for dance performance and basic dance techniques, sourcing information on the history and theory of dance and applying it to an area of work. Units 3 and 4 offers scored assessment and incorporates units such as sourcing and applying entertainment industry knowledge, preparing for a dance performance, refining basic dance techniques and applying basic dance techniques for performances. Course Description The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care (formerly called Children’s Services) prepares students to be competent in a range of skills, knowledge and attributes identified by the Children’s Services sector. School-based new apprenticeships and traineeships may also be available in addition to entry-level employment.
