Definitions
Informatics
• the sciences concerned with
gathering, manipulating,
storing, retrieving, and
classifying recorded information
(AHD).
Informatics-
• The study of how information is
collected, organized,
manipulated, classified, stored,
retrieved, and visualized (ASU).
"Informatics is the discipline of science
which investigates the structure and
properties (not specific content) of scientific
information, as well as the regularities of
scientific information activity, its theory,
history, methodology and organization."
FID NewsBull. XVII. 73/2 as listed in The Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd
Edition.
Health informatics
• is the knowledge, skills and tools which enable information to be collected, managed, used and shared to support the delivery of healthcare and to promote health (NHS careers in health informatics website. http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/details/Default. aspx?Id=767. Visited 30 May 2006).

Veterinary Informatics
• is the discipline concerned with
the application of information
science, engineering, and
computer technology to support
veterinary teaching, research,
and practice (Boschert, K.
1998).
Growth of Information
• Daniel 12:4 But as for you,
Daniel, keep these words
hidden and lock up the Book
until the end of time. Many will
travel here and there and
knowledge will be more and
more.
Estimates
• Information doubles every 5 years
• There are nearly 10,000 randomized controlled trials annually,
• The information exceeds the inherent limitations of the unaided human mind.” (Millenson, 1997)

Why do we NEED to study informatics?
• To equip us to manage massive
info
• To aid veterinary practice,
research and education
• To empower the practitioners
“Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are
powerful beyond imagination”
Albert Einstein
