AFL Victoria well supportedAFL Victoria, and our two main competitions, are well supported by our off fi eld partners.

VICTORIAN football has earned the reputation as the premier football State in the country. It can be viewed by Victoria’s dominance, either Vic Country and/or Vic Metro, at the NAB AFL Under 16 and Under 18 Championship levels; the high number of annual selections at the AFL NAB Draft as well as the VFL’s success in State representative matches over the years.

Such success is borne from many aspects: supportive development programs, well managed network of community football leagues, well structured administration, clearly defi ned talent pathways, trained resources, qualifi ed coaching, best possible facilities, latest technology as well as an army of volunteers who share an unswerving passion for the game.

And, it also requires productive and strong partnerships.

Victoria is fortunate to have the support of many valued partnerships, whose contribution and commitment has and will continue to play a signifi cant role in the ongoing growth, development and prosperity of the game.

The TAC – Transport Accident Commission – has been the sole major sponsor of the TAC Cup

competition, regarded universally as the fi nest football nursery in the country, since the competition was established in 1992.

One of sport’s most enduring partnerships, the TAC and the Under 18 competition complement each other across so many areas as young men make the quantum leap to being young adults.

Currently, the TAC and AFL Victoria have partnered to develop and promote the “Blood Oath” campaign which reminds young men that “Your mate’s life is in your hands” and pushes the road safety message through football clubs at all levels. Blood Oath aims to engage young people through the campaign Facebook page, www.facebook.com/mybloodoath and local football clubs.

Earlier this year, AFL Victoria was proud to welcome Peter Jackson Melbourne as the premier partner of the VFL competition.

Peter Jackson Melbourne, a Victorian-based company, has been synonymous with fashion and style for more than half a century as well as being passionate supporters of the game in our State.

Last week Box Hill Hawks and Collingwood contested the

education themed “Training For Life” Cup which was made possible through AFL Victoria’s partnership with Acacia. Skills Victoria supported the Acacia initiative to promote education and the value of training to a wide cross section of the community with Minister for Higher Education and Skills, the Hon. Peter Hall, on hand at the game to make the announcement.

Acacia, as a major partner of AFL Victoria, help ensure the on fi eld AFL Victoria pathway in the VFL and the TAC Cup aligns with the off fi eld component.

Another long-standing crucial partner of the VFL competition is ABC TV, whose analyst Phil Cleary, featured inside this edition, is celebrating his 25th season calling the VFA/VFL. We are very appreciative of the support that the ABC provides State league level football around Australia, including the Peter Jackson Melbourne VFL competition.

Partnerships play an important role in all levels of football and AFL Victoria is fortunate to have such collaborative partners.

Through the Blood Oath campaign, you have an opportunity to play your part in helping spread the road safety message.

note from the editor

IN the last week, the Blood Oath campaign has kicked off across Victoria.

The Blood Oath campaign is a joint project between the TAC and AFL Victoria to prevent young people, particularly males aged 18-25, from being killed or seriously injured in road trauma. Fronting the campaign is two of the AFL’s best known brothers, Brad and Chris Scott, who can both be seen in the ad campaign now airing on TV.

The TAC recognises the importance of young people, particularly young footballers, being road safety ambassadors in their community and this campaign promotes that. When we pick up the papers of a weekend, we want to be reading about the positive stories to come out of football, not of horrifi c road accidents and the damning stats that last year alone we lost the equivalent of 10 country footy teams’ worth of men due to road trauma (220 male deaths in 2010).

Since the Facebook site has been set up, over 10,000 people

have shown their support for the site by ‘liking’ it, but we need you to take the next step of pledging your ‘Blood Oath’. By taking the Oath, you are showing your commitment to your teammates, your club and the wider community to ensure that you understand that when on the road, “your mate’s life is in your hands”.

Stats for 2011 show we have already lost about three AFL footy teams worth of men on the roads, so now is the chance for football followers to put a stop to this trauma and encourage young people to drive responsibly by taking the “Blood Oath”.

Apart from publicly declaring to do your bit to curb the road toll for young drivers, individuals and clubs also have the chance to win great prizes.

Collingwood, Werribee Tigers, Frankston and Geelong were the early VFL clubs to be sitting in the top ten of their respective ladders, and each week during July we will update you with the biggest ladder movers, and prize winners from the Peter

Jackson VFL and TAC Cup. During July the TAC will be on the road at local matches as well, so keep an eye out for them at your local game.

How to enter:

Over the course of July Victorian football clubs can visit

www.facebook.com/mybloodoath select their team, select an oath to drive safely and post

their oath to their own Facebook page. This will encourage their friends to also take an oath and commit to safer driving. The aim is for your club to have the most oaths of all entries.

Prizes:

Prizes for clubs with the most oaths, in country and metropolitan Melbourne will be awarded each week. Individual prizes are also up for grabs.

At the end of July, one club in country Victoria and one club in the metropolitan area will each be rewarded with a $30,000 prize. Winning clubs will be those who receive the most pledges.

Williamstown vs East Perth

Saturday July 9,

5:05pm Etihad Stadium

Free Entry

NO shortage of familiar faces await Williamstown when they tackle East Perth in a Foxtel Cup Semi Final on Saturday at Etihad Stadium.

East Perth, who fi nished third last season on the West Australian Football League ladder, boast a plethora of ex AFL and VFL players as well as a number of Fremantle Dockers listed and rookie players.

Former North Melbourne forward Josh Smith, who played in all three North Ballarat premierships and won a Norm Goss Medal, headlines East Perth’s attack.

Smith, who kicked three goals in the Rooster’s Grand Final success last season, is likely to be joined by former Richmond No 1 draft selection Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls.

While Kayne Pettifer, another Richmond No 1 draft pick, played for East Perth earlier in the season, he’s since returned to Victoria and will not play after being transferred to Montrose in the EFL.

Another ex-Tiger Graham Polak played in East Perth’s Foxtel Quarter Final win against the Andrew McLeod NT Thunder, but subsequently he suffered yet another concussion.

East Perth also boast ex Hawthorn forward Gary Moss as well as former Port

Melbourne player Michael Swan, who won the 2000 Fothergill Round Medal.

The Royals ruck brigade is led by Fremantle’s Zac Clarke, who stands 203 cm.

For all its array of apparent talent, East Perth’s season in the WAFL has not risen to any great heights. They currently sit second last on the ladder with a 3-9 record.

East Perth progressed to its match-up against Williamstown on the back of a surging two-point win against reigning VFL premiers North Ballarat in the opening round of the Foxtel Cup.

The Royals defeated NT Thunder by six-points, but the victory was not without its anxious moments as NT Thunder kicked the last four goals of the match.

Williamstown, the odds-on favourites to win the Foxtel Cup according to various betting shops, advanced to the Semi

Final on the back of a 37-point win against Swan Districts in the fi rst round of the knock-out competition.

The Seagulls comfortably accounted for West Adelaide at AAMI Stadium, a match where the scoreboard fl attered the home team.

After two matches on the road, Williamstown will appreciate a ‘home’ match although they’ve never played at Etihad Stadium.

The Seagulls have rested a number of its VFL Listed players, including captain Brett Johnson and recruit Brett Goodes, during the early rounds, but both are expected to play against East Perth.

The Foxtel Cup Grand Final is played on Saturday, August 6, with the game likely to be played in either Adelaide or Perth depending on who wins the other Semi Final between Port Adelaide and Claremont.

phil cleary

PHIL Cleary is a whole host of things to different people: ex-politician, anti-violence against women crusader, media commentator and political activist.

But for most Cleary is Mr VFA or VFL, depending on what era you grew up.

Cleary, a VFL life member, a 205 game player with Coburg, including its 1979 premiership, and dual premiership coach with the club 1988-89, is celebrating 25-years of calling the VFA/VFL.

Switch on the ABC TV any given Saturday and there, larger than life, is Cleary: sometime irascible, controversial, opinionated, cheeky, articulate, sometimes caught in the glory days, but always informative, entertaining and interesting.

It’s a labor of love for Cleary, never the shy and retiring type when it comes to the media, who called his fi rst then VFA match in the 1987 Grand Final between Port Melbourne and Springvale, the last time a Grand Final was played at the Junction Oval.

Cleary held court previously on TV. His interview with then Channel 10 boundary rider Tony Banks after he had been sent from the ground for 15 minutes after a tete-a-tete with Williamstown captain-coach Terry Wheeler in the 1986 Grand Final is part of VFA folk lore.

“What happened, Phil,” asked a dead-pan Banks. “Absolutely

nothing, it’s not a very good decision,” fumed Cleary through clenched teeth.

Along the ABC TV journey, Cleary has been joined by Sam Kekovich, Peter Gee, Ross Booth, the late Clinton Grybas, Drew Morphett, Peter Donegan, David Rhys-Jones as well as many of today’s VFL coaches.

Cleary is particularly fond of regaling all Kekovich’s mixed metaphors – “you’ve got to take your hands off to that bloke”, “the accumulative nimbo clouds”, “the battle of the titians” and “seeking the sanction of the boundary line”.

“There wasn’t a metaphor that ‘Keka’ could not muck up,” laughed Cleary, “but they were funny and highly entertaining Saturday afternoons. ‘Keka’ brought his own idiosyncratic behaviour to the telecast.

“We would joke about when ‘Keka’ would coach Camberwell by phone from the Warrnambool races. We had a lot of fun, but when it came to be serious we would be as graphic and incisive and compelling as anyone.”

Cleary still rates Gee’s call of the 1990 VFA Grand Final between Williamstown and Springvale as his all-time favourite.

“Peter said ‘Barry Round, the oldest man playing in the oldest game is doing everything he can and then some to lift his team over the line’,” Cleary said. “It captured the moment.”

The most enduring partnership, however, has been with Booth, who fi rst called a VFA match for ABC TV in 1988.

Booth, a former amateur star with Monash University, where he is now Course Director and senior lecturer of Business and Economics, has been the Bud Abbott to Cleary’s Lou Costello for much of the journey.

“I would and still do take the ‘mickey’ out of Ross, this toff from Toorak and even though he wasn’t a toff from Toorak, it still works,” Cleary said.

“Ross was painted by me as this squeaky clean amateur player, always very measured and one who would never, ever criticise umpires.

“In fact, he’s a boy from Numurkah and he was a very good, hard-at-the-ball amateur footballer. I’ve always been well, I suppose, out spoken and Ross has been very measured. We complement each other well.

“Ross is a very good caller. He adds that something special to our marvellous telecasts.”

Cleary does more than call or commentate. He’s been an innovator, he’s taken the viewer inside the game. Cleary was the fi rst to take the audience inside the quarter, three-quarter time huddle, do a live interview with a coach in the coach’s box during a game.

He interviews players on the sidelines, even those like Port Melbourne’s Toby Pinwill,

who was ordered from the ground after being reported during last year’s fi nal series. Certainly, Cleary goes where angels fear to tread.

“Because the VFA/VFL is a distinctive suburban competition, I provide what I would describe as a rare link,” Cleary said.

“Yes, I may have a preparedness to challenge authority, say what other people may be too afraid to say. But, that’s me.”

What also works well for Cleary is that he’s able to recall vividly the great tales and characters from when he played and football was a lot different to what we know it now. He’s particularly fond of recounting

personal anecdotes with the likes of Harold Martin or the Goss or Shinner brothers or ‘Buster’ Harland.

At a recent Port Melbourne match, Cleary provided a delightful vignette of the days when Wayne Johnston, father of Port player Mark, kicked four goals for Prahran alongside Sam Kekovich in 1978.

“I can draw the bridge on the past to the present,” he said.

While he’s moved in recent years from the broadcast booth to boundary rider, Cleary still brings the game to life. It may be an honest appraisal, an anecdote when he was more than the self-proclaimed super coach or an

insight from an incident in the huddle.

Cleary loves nothing more than talking to the coaches, the players, the celebrities - football, political or TV - from the terraces. More than anything, Cleary loves football.

These days he coaches West Coburg under 18s. He triumphantly notes he coached the under 16s to a premiership a couple of years ago and has moved with the game’s evolving strategies.

He’d like nothing more than be part of the ABC TV coverage for another decade or more. Simply, it’s the love of the game.

And, that’s something Mr VFL has never lost.

Toby Thoolen

Age: 21

Clubs: Collingwood, Frankston

Games: 64

Goals: 13

TOBY Thoolen was 17 when Collingwood used its second selection at the 2007 AFL National Draft to secure him.

At the end of the 2009 season, Thoolen was released by the Magpies without having played one AFL match. By his own admission, Thoolen was too raw, immature and not ready for the unrelenting and uncompromising demands of AFL.

Now, in his second season at Frankston, Thoolen, more confi dent in his ability, more mature body-wise and more football savvy, is staking a case for AFL clubs to have a second look at him.

Dolphins coach Simon Goosey believes Thoolen, listed at 197 cm and 100 kg, has much to offer an AFL club.

Goosey said Thoolen would currently be in the top three in the Frankston best and fairest count and is doing everything asked of him. He added that Thoolen had stood key opposition forwards and regularly emerged on top.

“He’s a 6’4”, 6’5” in the old measurements with a lot of

pace and he’s had at the most two goals kicked on him,” Goosey said.

“I’ve been impressed with him. He’s a good athlete and there’s no doubt he’s better now than when Collingwood drafted him.

“Guys this height take a while to mature and he’s just turned 21. Key position players are pretty hard to come by, I really rate him.”

Thoolen has no doubt that he’s better equipped in all facets of the game now than he was four seasons ago. He noted that he’s now more confi dent in his ability and what he can and can’t do.

He said it was simply a development issue and with that, he was now feeding on the encouragement of Goosey, the coaching staff and his teammates.

“I’m feeling pretty confi dent this year even though we’re not going that well as a team,” Thoolen said.

“My fi rst year with Collingwood was pretty disappointing, but I had a pretty big pre-season in ’08, but at the end of the year I dropped away.

“I didn’t have the consistency about my game that I needed to so that I could stay on the list. I was only 17 when Collingwood drafted me, I was raw, didn’t know much about the game and I was playing a key position.

“It’s not making excuses. I

just didn’t take my opportunity when it was handed to me.”

While Thoolen lives and works in North Melbourne he chose Frankston as the stand-alone concept appealed to him for a variety of reasons.

He likes the idea of everyone at the club playing with the aim of winning and while Frankston has not done that as much as he or his teammates would like it’s not that far away.

“We’re improving all the time, all the boys see that. We just have to start learning how to win.”

Thoolen ready for second chance

Ben Clifton

Age: 21

Clubs: Coburg Tigers

Games: 38

Goals: 13

CERTAIN things, innocuous to many, stick in some player’s minds.

For Ben Clifton it’s the Guernsey number he was allocated when he fi rst arrived at Coburg Tigers back at the start of the 2008 season.

Clifton, along with house mate Tom Groves, arrived from Assumption College to try their luck in the VFL.

As Clifton recalls they were

the last two added to the list and were given Nos 62 & 63 respectively.

The pair have stuck around and their numerical order of Clifton’s jumper – now No 9 – refl ects his growing status at the club.

After playing two senior games in his fi rst season, Clifton played seven in 2009, all 18 last season and every match so far this season.

While there’s a clear consistency path in Clifton’s career, it hasn’t been as apparent with Coburg Tigers.

Frustrating best describes Coburg Tigers season, a season punctuated by early narrow defeats, some terrible thumpings and then a few inspirational wins.

Certainly, it’s a season that hasn’t seen the club scale the heights the playing group, supporters or the wider VFL community thought it would reach.

Coburg Tigers would need to embark on a winning spree over the remainder of the season if it is to have any chance of making the fi nals.

Clifton, now in his fourth season at Coburg Tigers, is as frustrated as any by how the season has panned out.

He said Coburg Tigers is capable of playing “awesome” football as evidenced by how they played against Casey Scorpions and Collingwood as well as in the close losses against Sandringham and

Northern Bullants.

Clifton added that the team had played well in patches in other games, but attributed the defeats to lapses in concentration.

“It is frustrating when you are out there because you can see it all happening, but there’s nothing you can do,” Clifton said.

“The coaches prepare us and know exactly how the other team is going to play, but it just happens. We will start playing good football, come back and then fall away.

“We were with Werribee for three-quarters, probably should have beaten them, but then in the last quarter we didn’t show enough and they took advantage of that and smashed us.”

What is hard to digest is that Coburg Tigers have an emerging core of VFL players and this season have uncovered some talented youngsters like Glen Grgic, Dylan Murphy and Willie Wheeler coupled with the Richmond list.

Clifton said the group of 18 and 19-year-olds – Grgic, Murphy and Wheeler – have come into the team and made an impact, something the club did not have last year.

“It’s a good mix, but we haven’t put it altogether at the same time,” Clifton said.

Everyone at Coburg Tigers hopes that can be rectifi ed in the remainder of the season.

Number shortens for Clifton

kyle matthews

FOOTBALL is a character building game in so many ways, just ask Kyle Matthews.

It has been well documented how Matthews was cowardly and savagely attacked outside a suburban hotel early last year.

The Casey Scorpions captain spent several weeks in the Alfred Hospital as he recovered from a fractured skull, swelling and bleeding to the brain.

Then for a further six months, Matthews engaged in rehab as he attempted to pick up the pieces of his life.

Throughout such a devastating ordeal Matthews, club captain since 2008, was driven by a burning desire to again pull on his beloved Scorpions jumper.

Matthews much awaited come back struck an unexpected further hurdle on the door step of the 2011 season – a strained hamstring in the second last practice match.

Again, Matthews was forced to start over again. He returned for Casey Scorpions’ match against Frankston, the fi rst step to get his career back on track.

But, in the next match, Matthews copped what seemed an innocuous knee to a leg. Initially, it was thought to be nothing worse than bruising to bone.

When there had been little improvement a week later, Matthews undertook a scan, which revealed a small fracture. It resulted in the leg being put in a brace for three weeks.

Not surprisingly, Matthews was shattered by the latest set-back. So, too, his teammates, according to coach Brad Gotch.

“He was very emotional and so were the players,” Gotch said.

“It took Kyle a while to get over the latest set-back. It is

just shattering for everyone at the club, especially Kyle.

“For (James) Wall, (Rian) McGough, (Tim) Mohr and (Evan) Panozza this year was about getting Kyle back and playing with him and being successful.”

Through no fault of his, Matthews has had the best part of two seasons erased. And, as Gotch noted, he was in the prime of his career. Matthews had been in the VFL Team Of The Year in 2006-07 and was named captain in 2008.

Gotch said Matthews had still been on the radar of several AFL clubs.

“It’s been a big one to cover from his spirit and leadership on the ground. He is the heartbeat of the club,” Gotch said.

Matthews now has to start again the slow build-up. It could be anywhere up to one month before the 25-year-old could be back playing.

While Matthew’s character has been tested to the limit, Gotch has no doubt that the Scorpions leader will emerge from these set-backs stronger and more determined than ever before.

Matthews continues recovery

EACH week at a VFL game we will catch up with a fan in the crowd.

Name: Elizabeth Window, but I am known as Betty

Lives: Doncaster

VFL team you support: Box Hill Hawks.

How did you come to support

Box Hill? I have followed them since they were in the Eastern Suburban League, and then they went to the VFA, and my brother was the mascot. My father played for them in the late 1930’s. He brought me along in 1945 and I have been following ever since.

Favourite VFL player currently

at Box Hill: My favourite last year was Ed Curnow, but he has gone to Carlton, and I sponsored him. I fi nd they are all pretty good out here, so hard to pick a favourite. I just love them all.

Must be great to see a

number of Box Hill players

recruited to the AFL: We are very proud here, as Sam Isles came from Collingwood, and then came to Box Hill and is now playing for Gold Coast. Pedersen is playing at North Melbourne, Ed has been at Carlton and of course my number 1 Sam Mitchell at Hawthorn.

Favourite past player at Box

Hill: Sam Mitchell, then in the early days the likes of Butch Parks, Harvey Dunn, a lot would not know these players as they are ones from

the past. Geoff Kronk, he wore number 10. I have such wonderful memories of the past players.

AFL club you support:

Collingwood. It is tough on the allegiances (Box Hill Hawks playing Collingwood last week), as I am going to see Collingwood AFL Sunday. I have always had a soft spot for Hawthorn though, as they are brown and gold, and Box Hill are brown and gold. I always said if I had a second team it would be Hawthorn.

Most memorable VFL

moment: It was winning the Grand Final in 2001. Donald McDonald was coach and we played Werribee. Barbara, my friend, and I were crying our eyes out as it was the fi rst division 1 premiership we had won – we won 2 in second division, but not in fi rst division.

It must be good to cheer

on the Hawks with friends

at the footy: My friend Barbara’s husband was a life member of the club, and she is as well. We have been supporters and good mates for years.

What do you enjoy about

VFL football? I enjoy the community spirit. You get to know the people more, as far as players and staff, which you would not get to know in the AFL.

You would have noticed the

changes in facilities over the

years at Box Hill: It has been

marvellous. The wonderful pavilion at Box Hill, I thought I might have been dead and buried by the time it was built and ready. We have done well, a few times we thought we would no longer be in the VFA, we struggled but we fought back. We are still going when other clubs have fallen.

Favourite food at the footy:

My father reckons I used to always keep the lolly counter going, as I liked the Cherry Ripes and Polly Waffl es. I do like the occasional pastie or pie as well.

Grand fi nal prediction: I am hoping Box Hill can do a bit better, but I think it will be a bit of a toss up between Port, and maybe a team that is down a bit further on the ladder - would like to see someone like that get into the Grand Final

Liston Medal Winner: Sam Gibson has done very well this season, so he would be a chance.

COBURG Tigers General Manager Jake McCauley

Jake is new to the role at Coburg this season, and we fi nd out what his aims are for this year, as well as what his background in football is.

What was your involvement in football before moving to Coburg? I’ve played Australian Rules Football all my life, starting around 6 years old and played all my juniors on the Gold Coast with Surfers Paradise Football Club. In January 2007 I moved to Darwin to work with AFL Northern Territory as Commercial Operations Coordinator. I continued my involvement as a player by playing in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) with the Darwin Buffaloes. I moved to Alice Springs in January 2009 to take up the position of General Manager of AFL Central Australia. As I was running the league I didn’t play but stayed involved by umpiring. I then moved to Melbourne in March 2011 to take up the position of GM at Coburg Football Club. I currently play for Fitzroy Stars in the Northern Football League. I grew up supporting North Melbourne and have been a member for the past 7 years. My ‘little’ brother currently plays with the Brisbane Lions (Broc McCauley).

What brought you to the Coburg FC this year? I always wanted to get to Melbourne. Every-time I had visited on holidays or a weekend away, I loved the city. There’s always so much on. I’m a bit of a footy tragic so I enjoy the mass media coverage

it receives here. Melbourne is the epicentre of the AFL industry so it was always a natural progression to one day move here to work. When the opportunity presented itself here at Coburg FC it was too good an opportunity to pass by and I was delighted when I was accepted with the role.

How have you enjoyed settling into your role in the VFL? I’m absolutely loving the role. Having started on the eve of round 1 it was always going to be an extremely busy start to the year. Coupled with the fact that we relocated offi ces into our brand new offi ces at Mantello Holden Oval, Coburg, which was not without some moving pains (no internet or phone lines for 2.5 weeks). The role is everything I imagined it would be, and a whole lot more. I’m fortunate to work under the direction of a strong Board and have two very committed and very capable full-time employees. Like any Football Club, Coburg is blessed to have a fantastic support network of volunteers and casual staff that provide crucial roles on a weekly basis for the Football Club. This support has ensured a near seamless transition into the role.

What are some of your aims in the role? Like any Football Club the reason we are here is to achieve success, which is, to play fi nals football and win premierships. We last played senior fi nals in 2008 and made the Grand Final in 2007, that’s where we want, and need, to get back to. It’s my aim and job to ensure that we are successful

off the fi eld, in sponsorship, membership, events, business development and spectator attendance, to ensure that we give our Coaching staff the best possible player talent, support staff, equipment and technology to work with.

I also want to increase the ‘sense of club’ around the Football Club. Coburg, like a lot of VFL clubs, has had such a high turnover of players each and every year, that it makes it hard to build a strong club culture and club atmosphere. We have an extremely talented, but extremely young, playing list. Nearly every week the opposition club has a host of 50+ game VFL players and we are lucky to have one or even two. We want our players to ‘buy in’ to where we are going as a Football Club and we believe that if we can keep a large core of players together for the next 2-3 years, that will bring with it success.

We also want to continue to strengthen the partnerships with our aligned partners, Richmond FC and Calder Cannons. We have a strong working relationship with Richmond FC and we’re very fortunate to have such a great ‘football factory’ to tap into in the Cannons. We currently have around 17 ex-Cannons players on our list.

It’s now up to everyone associated with the Club, whether that be the Board, Staff, Sponsors, Members, Players or Supporters, to ‘buy in’ to where we are going and come on the journey with us, as there’s some very exciting times ahead.

russ gabriel

Russ Gabriel

Age: 22

Clubs: Frankston

Games: 47

Goals: 14

ALL the coaches he’s played under from the TAC Cup to VFL love big Russ Gabriel for the one simple reason - he leaves nothing in the change rooms.

From Graeme Yeats at Dandenong Stingrays, where he won the 2007 best and fairest, to both Shannon Grant and Simon Goosey, at Frankston, everyone has the utmost admiration for Gabriel.

Each and every week Gabriel gives his club and his teammates 110 percent and then some more. Sure, he may look ungainly at times, but he’s effective, he’s tireless and above all he’s a team fi rst man.

Many teammates and opponents view Gabriel as the heart and soul of the club.

Frankston start underdogs in most games, but try selling the notion to Gabriel that the Dolphins can’t or won’t win. He just doesn’t wear it.

Ask him what drives him and Gabriel shoots back “I want to win. I hate losing. I try to give it all to get over the line.”

It’s a philosophy that Gabriel has carried with him from his early junior days. “I just try to make an impact,” he said.

“I just try to do everything I can personally to help us win.”

At times that’s meant spotting opponents centimetres and kilograms, but it hasn’t dented the enthusiasm or his determination of Gabriel, who stands 197cm and tips the scales at 102 kg.

While outsiders may wonder how Gabriel or his teammates keep their spirits up, given the past two seasons have netted the grand total of two wins, the 22-year-old said the camaraderie and bond among the group was granite-like.

Gabriel said most of the Frankston list were “mates” on and off the fi eld and they all liked playing together for the club.

“When you are playing with mates it makes it a lot more enjoyable,” Gabriel said.

“There’s a few guys from the Stingrays who I wasn’t that close with, but now we’re at Frankston we get along really well.”

When Port Melbourne infl icted a crushing 20-goal defeat back in round 6 it proved the line in the sand for all the Dolphins.

Gabriel said the humbling loss proved an eye-opener at just what level of play was needed for the team to be successful.

He noted that most of the players were aged 23 or younger and apart from

captain Paul Kennedy, Toby Thoolen and the injured Clinton Proctor, none of the list had played 50 VFL games.

“We had 10 fi rst gamers in the opening round this year,” Gabriel said.

“It takes a while for everyone to get to know each other and the number of injuries we’ve had this year has messed us around a bit.”

Frankston has lost fi ve players for the rest of the season, including Proctor and Ben Crowe. Such has been the extent of injuries that Goosey pulled on the boots to help make up the numbers in the reserves.

It hasn’t stopped Russ Gabriel doing what he’s always done – playing to win.

williamstown vs northern bullants

WILLIAMSTOWN has won their third consecutive game after disposing of a disappointing Northern Bullants outfi t by 29-points at Preston City Oval on Sunday as James Hunter Smith reports.

Led by young guns Tom Liberatore and Mitch Wallis in the midfi eld, the Seagulls piled on seven unanswered goals in the second quarter to run out winners 16.13 (109) to 12.8 (80).

Despite being held to only two behinds in the third quarter to Northern’s six goals, their solid performance in the other three terms was enough to get them over the line.

Wallis led the way for Williamstown with 28 touches, while Nathan Djerrkura (27), Tom Liberatore (25) and Bulldog Justin Sherman (18) were also strong. Brian Lake and Jordan Roughead were prominent up forward with three goals apiece.

For the Bullants, Ahmed Saad was back to his usual best with fi ve majors, while Brock McLean had a day out with 27 possessions to his name.

The win solidifi es the Seagull’s top-two credentials as they fi nd themselves two games clear of third-place North Ballarat on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder. The Bullants on the other hand remain in the top four, however boast a relatively unhealthy percentage.

Williamstown coach Peter German said he was pleased with his side’s current form especially after their tough recent schedule.

“When I looked at the fi xture three or four weeks ago, we had [the] Bullants and Bendigo coming up, I thought it’s going to be a tough couple of weeks,” he said.

“So to come through both of them and get the four points…is pretty good.”

German admitted while his Seagulls are in a strong overall position, he didn’t want to get too carried away

as his team structures are vulnerable from week to week.

“Sometimes you’re only an injury or two away from changing your whole side and structure and all those sorts of things,” he said.

“In this scenario that we’re in, you can’t get too comfortable because things can change.

“But at the moment we’ve still got some depth…in our seconds [with players] who can come up and play some good senior footy, so I’d like to think we’re in reasonable shape at the moment.”

After what was initially a close contest in the fi rst quarter, the Seagulls slammed home seven straight goals in the second term to completely blow the game out of the water.

Helped by Liberatore’s brilliant clearance work and Djekkura’s tackling pressure, Williamstown were able to get on top of their opponents in a ruthless tirade of goals.

Patrick Veszpremi found an open Jason Tutt in the early stages of the quarter for a quick goal, and from there things went pear-shaped for the dumbfounded Northern outfi t who found themselves trailing by 59 points at the main break.

However, in traditional Bullants spirit, they clawed their way back into the

contest with their six goal to none third quarter to spark unseen life into the players.

Ahmed Saad slotted two early majors, prompting fellow teammate Brock McLean to nail a ripping goal from the tightest of angles.

Williamstown had no answer to Northern’s increased work rate and defensive pressure, and after Dennis Armfi eld later broke two tackles and converted from 45 metres out, the Bullants entered the fi nal term trailing by only 21 points.

An animated Peter German at the three quarter time huddle spurred his troops as they came out fi ring in the forth quarter, piling on the opening four goals and putting the game well out of reach.

Brian Lake slotted two quick majors with the help from fellow Bulldog Justin Sherman who worked hard to fi nd him open in the goal square, while Will Minson also got among the action with a goal to his name as Williamstown ran out winners 16.13 (109) to 12.8 (80).

This week the Bullants face a vulnerable Sandringham outfi t at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday in a vital clash, while Williamstown take on East Perth in the Semi-Final of the Foxtel Cup at Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

glen grgic

Glen Grgic

Age: 18

Clubs: Coburg Tigers

Games: 4

Goals: 1

GLEN Grgic headed to the City Oval, Coburg for the 2011 pre-season training without a friend, a profi le, but something much stronger – a desire to forge a name for himself.

Some may have considered it little more than a dream, but Grgic is not a dreamer. Yes, he has aspirations and ambitions, but they are based on the results of hard work.

And, that’s been readily evident from the time pre-season started.

The Northern Knights graduate may be one of the youngest on Coburg Tigers’ VFL list, but he created an impression with coach Adam Potter right off the bat.

So much so that Grgic, who fi rst broke into the seniors under the 23rd player rule, held his place under his own right when he’d played his cap of games under rules governing the 23rd player.

While he was technically aligned to the Northern Bullants, Grgic said he wanted to “try something different”. He spent one week training with the Bullants and another with Coburg Tigers before making his decision.

Apart from Alex McLeod, who played at rival TAC Cup club Calder Cannons in 2010, Grgic was faced with a sea of anonymous faces when he arrived at City Oval.

“I saw Coburg Tigers as a new challenge,” Grgic said.

“I didn’t know anyone. I saw it as a chance to make a name for myself. I just wanted to take every opportunity I had.

“I worked hard pre-season and things just worked out from there.”

Potter gave Grgic his chance against reigning premiers North Ballarat. He made an immediate impact featuring in the best players in a losing team.

Grgic uses the analogy of a boy transforming into a man to describe his fi rst VFL season. It was not so much the speed of the game, but adapting to the bigger bodies continually bumping into him.

“It was a big challenge stepping on to the fi eld, but it was exciting. It was a great feeling knowing that you are playing at the best level you can. I’ve learned a lot, the fi ner points of the game,” Grgic said.

“There is so much more to the game than at TAC Cup level.”

While he’s gone back to the reserves, it’s only strengthened his resolve to fi ght his way back for more senior games before the season is over.

Potter’s feed-back is for him to become more of a fi rst option player, something he’s striving to achieve. Grgic said he saw playing in the reserves as just another opportunity to “knock on the door” and hopefully force his way back into the seniors.

“I want to get back in there and then hopefully push for a rookie spot,” Grgic said.

As Glen Grgic knows anything is possible if you’re prepared to work hard enough.

Grgic works hard for senior spot

A DETERMINED Geelong outfi t posted its second win of season 2011, overpowering Frankston at Skilled Stadium last Saturday as Kane Hunkin reports.

Despite both teams entering the game with the undesirable tag of ‘cellar dwellers’, it was the Cats who led from start to fi nish in a dominant display, curbing Frankston’s resistance in all areas of the ground.

Buoyed by some recent competitive form and the return of a number of impressive youngsters (having received a taste at AFL level the previous weekend), Geelong virtually killed off the contest early.

The home side, with the aid of a handy breeze blowing to the Barwon River end, kicked the fi rst fi ve goals of the contest to enter quarter time with a signifi cant 33 point lead.

Frankston’s work rate lifted early when it was their turn to benefi t from the strong southerly in the second term, but despite the efforts of Khan Haretuku (three goals) and James Appleford (two goals) up forward, the application did not refl ect itself on the scoreboard. Geelong posted nine of the quarter’s twelve majors to effectively see the game over by half-time.

Prominent Cat big-man Cameron Mooney was assertive in the fi rst half, with his trademark lead-up efforts and confi dent set-shot conversions a welcome feature for Cats fans, which saw the key forward register fi ve goals.

With the result seemingly determined, self-preservation became important for both teams. However, that appeared easier said than done for the Dolphins, with Benny Lean, Mark Baguley and Luke Potts all receiving injury knocks at various stages in the match’s latter moments.

The last quarter went through the motions with both sides trading goals and momentum. Although cold comfort, Frankston won the last quarter, but it was nevertheless a red letter day for Geelong winning by 93 points.

After the game, Geelong coach Dale Amos was encouraged by the efforts of his side, citing their polished four quarter display.

“The way we were playing and the style of footy we want them to be playing, they were able to deliver that on a regular basis [today],”

Amos said.

Additionally, the victorious coach affi rmed that the win was symptomatic of some respectable recent form.

“We got overrun by a bigger, more powerful Port Melbourne [last week]. But [against] the Bullants and Werribee I thought we played some pretty good footy and had ourselves in a position to win but just couldn’t quite get it done. So it’s a bit like a reward for effort.”

With Geelong AFL coach Chris Scott showing his willingness to blood youngsters this year, the VFL side has had a revolving-door of line-ups in 2011. However, as Amos comments, the club is well versed in handling players coming back to play important roles in the VFL.

“The environment’s really competitive here; as it should be and it’s important that those guys continue to stake a claim to play in the AFL. Having our own VFL program, our own VFL side allows for those guys to play exactly as they would if it was in the AFL,” he said.

Mooney, Trent West (three goals) and Mark Corrigan were important in an afternoon where you could throw a blanket over the entire Cats side for best on ground honours. Similarly, Dawson Simpson’s towering ruck work was again telling. While for the beaten Dolphins, Haretuku, Appleford and Matt Clark (two goals) were serviceable.

Geelong now enjoy the week off while Frankston will look to regroup quickly when they host Werribee on Sunday.

werribee tigers vs casey scorpions

THE Werribee Tigers continued their winning ways with a 12-point win over Casey Scorpions at Avalon Airport Oval last Saturday as Ben Carbonaro reports.

After a strong game against Coburg the previous week, the Tigers faced a test against a Casey team that was above them on the ladder.

Werribee opened the game with a strong fi rst quarter performance kicked three goals to Casey’s one. The Tigers back six led by Robbie Tarrant did a good job in cutting off many of the visitor’s attempts to drive the ball forward. Despite losing captain and ball magnet Dominic Gleeson in the early minutes to concussion, the Tigers led by 13 points at quarter time.

The home team continued to play better football during the second quarter as they were able to maintain consistency and make Casey work hard at the stoppages. Werribee held a handy 14 point lead at the main break.

Despite Casey’s best attempts to get back into the game, the delivery to their forward line and general ball movement was stalled thanks to a strong Werribee performance. The Tigers took advantage of some costly skill errors and got the ball down the ground with ease. A 35 point lead at three quarter time was enough to suggest that the home side were over the line.

While the Scorpions kicked seven goals in the fi nal quarter, the Tigers were able to hold on to win what was at times a fi ery clash. This came after they led by 47 points early in the quarter and were cruising to what looked like a strong home win.

Tigers coach Paul Satterley didn’t think the game was won until the fi nal siren had sounded.

“I didn’t think we had it won until the siren blew at the end,” Satterley said.

“I just thought we just dropped off with a bit of composure with the footy when we just needed to slow things down a bit.”

Satterley was frustrated with the fi nal quarter as his team let Casey back into the contest.

“It was a stressful game of footy towards the end,” he said.

“Our boys were fl at on their feet and I thought they were, too, but because they got a sniff of the game obviously their momentum grew a bit and they just got a little taste of perhaps winning the game.”

Robbie Castello and Ben Warren kicked three goals each for the Tigers, while North Melbourne listed Robbie Tarrant was best for his efforts in defence where he held Casey spearhead Brendan Fevola to two goals.

Lynden Dunn topped the goal kicking for Casey with 3, while teammate Addam Maric (30

disposals) was best on ground for the Scorpions.

This week for Werribee is a trip down to the Peninsula as they face Frankston on Sunday, while Casey hosts the Box Hill Hawks also on Sunday.

Tigers continue to rise

Robbie Tarrant was named amongst the best for Werribee last weekend against Casey.

COLLINGWOOD: Today is a sad day for the Collingwood VFL team as we lose our much loved VFL Football Manager, Paul Licuria to the corporate world. Our game against Port Melbourne will be his last, where he has offi cial club duties to perform. Over four years ago, he took on the job as Football Manager of a ‘standalone’, Collingwood VFL team. Starting from scratch, he got together all the coaches, staff and volunteers that enable the team to take the fi eld and the club to operate as successful as it possibly can. He is a wonderful football person and with another child on the way, he can now devote more time to his family. ‘Lica’ has given 14 wonderful years to the club, he will be greatly missed but very much welcomed if he fi nds time in the future, to come down and watch a few games.

PEOPLE have been telling Koe Ngwati for as long as he can remember that he has potential. It’s something that doesn’t sit easily with him.

Ngwati, a soccer convert, thanks his older brother for introducing him to football after family fi nancial restraints made it diffi cult early in his life.

“My mum couldn’t afford it, but my older brother Dylan made me go play football,” Ngwati said.

Right from the get-go, Ngwati showed talent, especially in winning contested ball situations. He puts that down to his love of boxing and never wanting to be beaten.

Ngwati’s boxing coach, who watches many of the Bendigo Pioneers games, tells him he’s got talent as do the Pioneers’ coaching hierarchy, but still the Year 12 student remains sceptical.

“I don’t think I’m as good as people make out. I’m not sure how far I’ll go,” Ngwati said.

“I just play for enjoyment and a bit of fun.”

Ngwati displayed some of that potential as Bendigo broke the shackles to post its fi rst win of the season when they defeated Calder Cannons in round 10.

Pioneers coach Mark Ellis said Ngwati had been “threatening” for a while to produce his best-on-ground performance against the Cannons.

Ngwati proved a pivotal player in the Pioneer’s fi rst win of the season as he amassed 27 possessions, collected eight hand ball receives and laid four tackles.

“It was pleasing to see him play well for the effort he’s putting in,” Ellis said.

Ngwati said he’d been training every night for the past couple of months and that his preparation had been “spot on” for the match against the Cannons.

Ellis said Ngwati still had much to learn, but the encouraging sign is that he’s heading in the right direction.

He said Ngwati had strength at the contest and he possessed a ‘never say die’ attitude.

“He’s learning the disciplines of being in a certain place at

a certain time and as a result he’s had a terrifi c year,” Ellis said.

“You can’t fault him. He’s started to work really hard. The penny might have dropped that he has ability and if he works hard he’ll be rewarded.”

During the development weekends, Ngwati has returned to the Sandhurst Football Club, his local club, where he’s played senior football.

Ellis said the 18-year-old is a key component to the team’s midfi eld and he was admired by all his teammates.

“He’s not frightened to put his head over the footy and work hard. It’s been a credit to him for what he’s been able to do,” Ellis said.

“Now he has to learn to be consistent with that form.”

bendigo pioneers

WINS have been as scarce for Bendigo Pioneers these past few years as fi nding nuggets of gold on McIvor Highway.

The Pioneers have won six games in the past three seasons, including the 2011 season, not that you would know it speaking to Mark Ellis, now in his seventh year as Bendigo’s coach.

Ellis is as upbeat, enthusiastic and positive as a coach who has won a swag of premierships during that time, not someone who’s usually cast as a spectator come fi nals.

While Bendigo played fi nals last year in the elongated fi nal’s format, the club has not fi nished higher than 10th in the past seven seasons.

Although they posted their fi rst win of the season against Calder Cannons in round 10,

Bendigo would need to win most of their remaining games to make the fi nal eight.

Ellis would dearly love to coach the Pioneers at Etihad Stadium late in September, but just because he won’t it doesn’t mean the season has been a failure.

Saddled with such a backdrop, Ellis, somewhat surprisingly to an outsider, said it’s not hard to wear a smile or be encouraging or positive.

“It’s a fantastic competition to be involved with and that extends beyond football,” Ellis said.

“Our aim is to always win games, but we also make sure that everyone on our list plays to the full potential of their ability.

“And, their full potential may be AFL, VFL or local footy. We

need to ensure that when they leave our program they leave as better people and better players.

“Obviously, we would love to be winning more games, but there’s been signifi cant improvement in the players.”

Ellis notes there is little for anyone to be gained if the coach was continually down or sulked or didn’t have faith in the playing group.

Signifi cantly, the player’s spirit refl ects their coach’s personality. They enter each game believing in one another and believing they can win.

And, that’s important when you have a dispersed group of players stretching from Bendigo to Kerang to Swan Hill to Mildura to Kyneton.

Ellis is a subscriber to the belief that if you work hard, stick to the basic tenets and never lose sight of your goals then success will come your way.

He said Bendigo was fortunate to have so many good people – regional manager Ray Byrne, the development coaches in the various regions etc – involved.

“The great thing is the players have never, ever got down on themselves and that’s what has kept the spirit around the place pretty good,” he said.

“I’ve got no doubt the wheel will turn, whether it’s for me or someone else. I believe if we keep working at it, the wheel will turn.”

SANDRINGHAM Dragons coach Dale Tapping knows the potential possessed by Dylan Gabron-Uhe, but he’s unsure if the St Bede’s student is aware of his talent.

Gabron-Uhe emerged from what Tapping described as a roller-coaster season to headline the Dragons’ comfortable win against Murray Bushrangers in round 10.

“Dylan has a lot of natural, raw ability: he can mark, he can jump, he can run,” Tapping said.

“His decision making needs to improve, but that will come with more football. It’s just about him being aware of what ability he’s got.

“He’s certainly got a lot of upside, he has a lot of raw footy ability. He has to learn the game, gain a lot more game knowledge like body positioning, when to stay and when to leave an opponent.”

Gabron-Uhe was cut from the Vic Metro squad, an obvious disappointment, but Tapping said it was hard to gauge the youngster’s feelings.

“He was probably burning inside, but externally he doesn’t show much,” Tapping said.

“It’s the same when he plays. You don’t see much different when he plays well and then just average. At times there’s not a lot of difference in emotions.”

Gabron-Uhe was rotated around the defensive half against the Bushrangers, where he acquitted himself well in all the match-ups.

He collected 19 possessions, had 10 hand ball receives

and took three contested marks in a performance that saw him gain fi ve votes in the TAC Cup Coaches award.

Tapping said the coaching staff had been waiting for Gabron-Uhe to spike in his form after a season that was disrupted early because of a shoulder injury.

He said the slow start to the season, coupled with the disappointment of not progressing through to the Vic Metro squad had made for an emotional roller-coaster ride for Gabron-Uhe.

“I said to the boys in the box against the Bushrangers ‘when he’s marking the ball well and he took some really strong marks, you know he’s in good knick’,” Tapping said.

“He’s a fantastic vertical leap, a bit of a spring-heel Jack. He’s very clean and clutches the ball well. There’s no doubt he can play, hopefully he turned the corner against the Bushies and can fi nish the year off in a positive manner.

“If he can reproduce what he did on the weekend there is a lot to like about what he does, but he has to fi nd that level of consistency and that extends to his training habits and preparing well.”

SOMETIMES, all a player needs is a change of scenery, so to speak, to spark him.

For Lachlan Fairley it came when he received a call up as the 23rd player for Williamstown in its match last month against Frankston.

From the moment he arrived at Werribee’s Chirnside Park, which this season acts as Williamstown’s home base, Fairley felt at ease and ready to make the transition from TAC Cup to VFL.

All the Williamstown and Western Bulldogs players, especially Lukas Markovic, welcomed Fairley and reinforced the belief that he could handle the step up.

“They just came up to me, reassured I was good enough to be playing, and told me just to concentrate,” Fairley said.

Seagulls’ coach Peter German gave Fairley about 55% game time, virtually exclusively playing in defence, but the 18-year-old acquitted himself well allowing just the solitary goal, late in the game, kicked against him.

German’s post-match feedback was positive. “It gave me a fair bit of confi dence,” Fairley said.

And, importantly, Fairley found himself more focused with greater concentration than he’d had with the Western Jets when he returned to the TAC Cup.

Fairley said that he’d had goals kicked on him when playing for the Jets when his concentration lapsed.

Jets’ coach Steve Kretiuk also noted there had been concentration issues, but added that when Fairley was “on” he was one of the “premier marks” in the TAC Cup.

“One on one he’s as good as anyone going around. He’s a bit like Jayden Post (a former Jets player now with Richmond) he just loves marking the footy and sometimes when he’s not in the right position he still goes for it,” Kretiuk said.

“We’ve put him on some key forwards like (Jonathon) Patton and he’s handled himself manfully all year.”

On his return to the Jets for its match against Dandenong

Stingrays in round 10, Fairley felt as good as he had in any game and he was also glad of the opportunity for the move away from the last line of defence to a run in the ruck and time in attack.

It resulted in Fairley collecting 24 possessions, won 19 hit outs, grabbing 11 marks, including four contested, laying four tackles and capping off his best-on-ground, maximum fi ve TAC Cup vote game, with three goals.

“I ran alright at times for a big guy in the pre-season (Fairley is 193 cm), but we need key position defenders,” Fairley said.

“It was good to have a run in the ruck and go forward and kick a few.”

One area that Fairley has been working on in tandem with the Jets coaching staff is his kicking. He candidly admitted that his disposal effi ciency had been lacking.

Fairley said he’d been concentrating on not turning the ball over. “I’ve always had a bad kicking technique, I used to drop the ball with both hands, and it’s something I’m always working on.

“Training with Willy over pre-season, the skills are so much better, it teaches you to kick under pressure and at 10 paces. It feels like I’m kicking a lot better this year,” he said.

Fairley hopes he gains another opportunity to play for Williamstown before the season is over.

VIC METRO has prevailed over South Australia by 26 points to show why they are favourites to take out this year’s AFL NAB Under 18 Championships as Toby Prime reports.

Gun centre-half forward Jonathon Patton proved the difference between the two teams with fi ve majors, doing his draft prospects no damage.

Vic Metro captain Billy Longer was superb in the ruck for VIC Metro, utilising his height and 95 kilogram frame to full advantage around the stoppages to help set up outside run for the Metro midfi elders.

Basked in sunlight at Skilled Stadium, Metro started the better of the two sides locking the ball inside their forward 50, not allowing South Australia the chance to carry the ball through the middle.

South Australian Chad Wingard was concussed late in the fi rst quarter after a fi erce tackle saw his head driven into the Skilled Stadium turf.

At quarter-time, Metro held an 11-point lead with South Australia down to three men on the bench due to Wingard’s concussion.

Vic Metro had the better of the play in the second quarter but couldn’t capitalise on their forward 50 entries.

On the contrary, South

Australia took full advantage of their entries trailing by one point late in the second quarter.

But on the half time siren, Patton goaled to put Metro up by seven points at the main break.

Metro continued their imposing style early in the third quarter opening up a 20-point lead halfway through the quarter.

It appeared South Australia might be able to will themselves back into the contest replying with two goals of their own to close the margin to eight points.

At this stage, it was all South Australia with the visitors increasing their tackling rate for the fi rst time in the match putting Metro under scoreboard pressure.

However South Australian coach Brenton Phillips would have been seeing red after a double 50 metre penalty gifted Alex Woodward a goal from the goal square.

Once again, it was that man Patton who stepped up in the fi nal minute to give Metro their 20-point lead at the fi nal change.

The big Eastern Ranges centre-half forward then stepped up again in the fi rst minute of the fi nal term booting his fourth major, giving Metro a 26-point lead.

For South Australia, the 26-point margin could have been a lot worse had Metro

been accurate in front of goal with 10 scoring shots to four in the fi nal quarter.

Metro faced their arch rival Vic Country on Wednesday night at Etihad Stadium, while South Australia met Western Australia. Scores were not available at time of print.

VIC COUNTRY were able to take enormous confi dence into their match with Vic Metro last Wednesday night after defeating Western Australia the previous Friday as Toby Prime reports.

Country built on their lead at every change, in the end running out comprehensive 49-point winners 12.13 (85) to 5.6 (36).

Clay Smith was a star for Country with clean possession the highlight of his game, while Devon Smith, Sam Docherty and Coleman Schache were pivotal in defense with their rebound out of 50 crucial.

The fi rst term was a tight affair with Country kicking the fi rst two goals before Western Australia hit back to tie scores up with fi ve minutes left in the term.

A late goal to Country gave them the advantage on the scoreboard, leading by one kick at the fi rst change.

The second term saw Country move the ball with precision and pace through the middle of Skilled Stadium basked in sunlight.

Geelong Falcons captain Taylor Adams started to become infl uential in the contest with his clearance work impressive for Country.

At half time, Country had stretched their lead to 17 points kicking four goals to two in the second term.

Emotion started getting high in the third term with spotfi res breaking out on the ground.

Halfway through the third term, Country had extended their lead to 33 points with Western Australia wasteful with their forward 50 entries.

On the three-quarter time siren emotions fl owed over, but the scoreboard saw Country with a 28-point lead heading into the fi nal quarter.

Country were able to hold Western Australia goalless in the fi nal term as Country kicked 3.5 to score their most impressive victory of the championships to date.

A damning stat for Western Australia was their inability

to fi nd a target inside their forward 50, with Country taking 16 marks inside their 50 compared to the visitors four.

Robert Hyde would have been hoping for a similar performance on Wednesday night when they faced favourites Vic Metro at Etihad Stadium, with results of that game available at www.taccup.com.au.

western jets vs gippsland power

WESTERN Jets soared into TAC Cup fi nals calculations after upsetting competition leaders Gippsland Power by 34 points at Shepley Oval on Saturday as Anna Harrington reports.

An immense fi rst half gave the Jets an insurmountable 59-point lead at the main break before they held steady for a comprehensive 13.12 (90) to 8.8 (56) victory.

Jets ruck-forward Lachlan Fairley was a clear best on ground, kicking three goals amongst his 25 possessions and 10 marks, while Jordan Mead racked up 23 possessions through the midfi eld.

For the Power, half back Jack Johnstone performed solidly all game and kicked two goals, while Shaun Marusic provided a solid presence at centre half back.

With the victory elevating

the Jets to seventh on the ladder, Jets stand-in coach Scott Korczynski said he was particularly pleased with his team’s ability to maintain the intensity shown in last week’s victory over Dandenong.

“I’m extremely proud of the boys, I think we’ve got a good group here and I spoke to the boys about getting consistency of effort… [after] we beat Dandenong last week [and] put a really good effort in,” Korczynski said.

“We were up against the top team in the competition [this week] and we’ve put together two really good efforts and hopefully that’s enough to get us into the eight.”

The Jets took advantage of two minor scores from Gippsland and registered the fi rst goal of the match through Fairley, who snared a contested mark and converted from close range.

With a strong breeze behind them, the Jets maintained their intensity and with the ruck combination of Fairley and Dylan Jones feeding a willing midfi eld, kicked a total of six goals to one for a 33-point lead at quarter time.

The Jets powered on in the second term, controlling the midfi eld and playing cleverly into the wind, with three goals coming from marks inside 50 and Jaxon Cooke earning another close-range major from a 50-metre penalty.

Fairley’s third goal closed out an excellent quarter of

contested football as the Jets kicked fi ve goals to one to enter the main break ahead by 59, the greatest margin of the match.

Despite stepping up in the third quarter, the Power largely failed to capitalise on the scoreboard, with goals to Shannen Lange and Jordan Staley the visitors’ only majors for the quarter.

For the Jets, midfi elder Kym Taylor stepped up, working hard across the ground and kicking his side’s only goal, ensuring the Jets held a 53-point lead at three quarter time.

The Jets maintained their composure in the fi nal quarter, Jones kicking the opening major to seal the result, four goals to the Power merely consolation prizes.

Gippsland coach Adam Dowie said while his team worked hard, the Jets’ fi rst-half performance was simply too good.

“I’m probably more disappointed in our fi rst half,” Dowie said.

“We’ve got a few injuries but... they really outplayed us in the fi rst half pretty comprehensively.

“It’s disappointing to lose but we got what we deserved.”

Next week the Jets will head to Box Hill Oval on Saturday to take on Eastern Ranges while Gippsland return to Morwell Football Oval for their clash with Northern Knights.
