angal Pandey was born on 19July 1827 in the villageNagwa, of Ballia district in

Uttar Pradesh of India to BhumiharBrahmin family.[1]

He joined the East India Company'sforces in 1849 at the age of 22. Pandeywas part of the 6th Company of the34th Bengal Native Infantry and isprimarily known for his involvement inan attack on several of the regiment'sofficers. This incident marked anopening stage in what came to beknown as the Indian Mutiny of 1857 or,recently, as the First War of IndianIndependence. In line with the modernIndian perspective of his historicalrole, it is now claimed] that Pandeywas a devout Hindu who practiced hisreligion diligently.

At Barrackpore on the afternoon ofMarch 29, 1857, Lieutenant Baugh,Adjutant of the 34th Bengal NativeInfantry (BNI), was informed thatseveral men of his regiment were in anexcited state. Further, it was reported tohim that one of them, Mangal Pandey,was pacing in front of the regiment'sguard room by the parade ground,armed with a loaded musket, callingupon the men to rebel and threateningto shoot the first European he set hiseyes on. It was because Mangal Pandeywas a Hindu and he was forced to usethe Enfield Rifle whose casings arecoated with beef which is taboo to theHindus . Baugh immediately buckledon his sword, placed loaded pistols inhis holsters, mounted his horse, andgalloped to the lines. Pandey tookposition behind the station gun, whichwas in front of the quarter-guard of the34th, took aim at Baugh and fired. Hemissed Baugh, but the bullet struck hishorse in the flank, and horse and riderwere brought down. Baugh quickly

disentangled himself and, seizing oneof his pistols, advanced towardsPandey and fired. He missed. BeforeBaugh could draw his sword, Pandeyattacked him with a talwar (a heavyIndian sword) and closing with theadjutant, slashed him on the shoulderand neck and brought him to theground. It was then that another sepoy,Shaikh Paltu, intervened and tried torestrain Pandey even as he tried toreload his musket.

English Sergeant-Major Hewson,had arrived on the ground, summonedby a native officer, before Baugh. Hehad ordered Jemadar Ishwari Prasad,the Indian officer in command of thequarter-guard, to arrest MangalPandey. To this, the jemadarexpostulated that his NCOs had gonefor help and that he could not takePandey by himself. At this, Hewsonordered Ishwari Prasad to fall in hisguard with loaded weapons. In themeantime, Baugh had arrived on thefield shouting 'Where is he? Where ishe?' Hewson called out to Baugh, 'Rideto the right, Sir, for your life. Thesepoy will fire at you!' At that pointPandey fired.

Hewson had charged towardsPandey as he was fighting withLieutenant Baugh. He then locked incombat with Pandey and was knockedto the ground from behind by a blowfrom Pandey's musket. The sound ofthe firing had brought other sepoysfrom the barracks; they remained mutespectators. At this juncture, ShaikhPaltu, a Muslim traitor, held him whiletrying to defend the two Englishmencalled upon the other sepoys to assisthim. Assailed by other sepoys, whothrew stones and shoes at his back, hecalled on the guard to help him holdPandey, but they threatened to shoothim if he did not let go of Pandey.

Some of the Hindu sepoys of thequarter-guard then advanced and struckat the two prostrate officers. They thenthreatened Shaikh Paltu and orderedhim to release Pandey, whom he hadbeen vainly trying to hold back.However, Paltu continued to holdPandey until Baugh and the sergeant-major had had time to get up. Himselfwounded by now, Paltu was obliged toloosen his grip. He backed away in onedirection and Waugh and Hewson inanother, while being struck with thebutt ends of the guards' muskets.

In the meantime, report of theincident had been carried to thecommanding officer General Hearsey,who then galloped to the ground withhis two sons. Taking in the scene, herode up to the guard, drew his pistoland ordered them to do their duty byseizing Mangal Pandey. The Generalthreatened to shoot the first man whodisobeyed. The men of the guard fell inand followed Hearsey towards Pandey.

Pandey then put the muzzle of themusket to his breast and discharged itby pressing the trigger with his foot.He collapsed bleeding and with hisregimental jacket on fire but notmortally wounded.[2][4]

Pandey recovered and was broughtto trial less than a week later.. He statedsteadfastly that he had mutinied on hisown accord and that none had playedany role in egging him on. When askedto defend himself, he said, "I did notknow what I was doing. I did not knowwho I wounded and who I did not.What more shall I say? I have nothingmore to say. I have no evidence". Hewas sentenced to death by hangingalong with the jemadar after three Sikhmembers of the quarter-guard testifiedthat the latter had ordered them not toarrest Pandey".

Mangal Pandey's execution wasscheduled for April 18, but was carriedout ten days before that date. JemadarIshwari Prasad was executed byhanging on April 21.[2]

The 34th B.N.I. Regiment wasdisbanded "with disgrace" on May 6 asa collective punishment, after aninvestigation by the government, forfailing to perform their duty inrestraining a mutinous soldier andprotecting their officer. This came aftera period of six weeks while petitionsfor leniency were examined inCalcutta. The Muslim traitor, ShaikhPaltu was promoted on the spot to thepost of Havaldar (native sergeant) byGeneral Hearsey, for his conductduring the incident.

The Indian historian Surendra NathSen notes that the 34th B.N.I. had agood recent record and that the Courtof Enquiry had not found any evidenceof a connection with unrest atBerhampur involving the 19th B.N.I.four weeks before (see below).

However, Mangal Pandey's actions andthe refusal of the armed and on-dutysepoys of the quarter-guard to takeaction convinced the British militaryauthorities that the whole regiment wasunreliable. It appeared that Pandey hadacted without first taking other sepoysinto his confidence but that antipathytowards their British officers within theregiment had led most of those presentto act as spectators rather than obeyorders. Many Indian soldiers wereinspired by Mangal Pandey. Theyoverthrew their superiors and crownedBahadur Shah Zafar king.

Rabid Christian Commander'ssacrilege

Commandant Wheeler of the 34thBNI was known as a rabid Christianpreacher, and this may also haveimpacted the Company's behavior. Thewife of Captain William Halliday of56th BNI had the Bible printed in Urduand Devanagari and distributed amongthe sepoys, thus raising suspicionsamongst them that the British wereintent on converting them toChristianity.

Also, the 19th and 34th BengalNative Infantry were stationed atLucknow during the time ofannexation of Oudh because of allegedmisgovernment by the Nawab, onFebruary 7, 1856. The annexation hadanother implication for sepoys in theBengal Army (a significant portion ofwhom came from that princely state).Before the annexation, these sepoyshad the right to petition the British

Resident at Lucknow for justice - asignificant privilege in the context ofnative courts. As a result of theannexation, they lost that right, sincethat state no longer existed. Moreover,this action was seen by the residents ofthe state as an affront to their honour,the annexation being done in violationof an existing treaty.

The sepoys were accordinglyaffected by the general discontentwhich had been stirred up by theannexation. In February 1857, boththese regiments were situated inBarrackpore.

The British army had introducednew rifles. Cartridges for these rifleswere encased in cow-grease coatedpaper which the sepoys werecompelled to tear with their teethbefore use.
