Executive summary
Door Step School would like to thank VIBHA for sponsoring our “Project
Foundation” activities over the past 3 years.
“Project Foundation” is part of the Direct Education Programme of Door Step
School which addresses the needs of children in the age group of 6 to 14 who do not
have access to formal schools. DSS runs Non Formal Education (NFE) classes and
study classes for these children, supported by Balwadis and Day Care Centres.
This report presents details of the 58 Centers funded by VIBHA covering the period
January 2010 to December 2010. Of these 58 centers, 18 were closed and new
centres identified to replace them. Overall, a total of 4521 children were benefited
through our Direct Education Program and more than 700 children benefited through
the support activities.

1. Door Step School – At a glance
All children deserve an education. An alarming number of India’s urban poor still
remain without an opportunity to receive formal education.
Door Step School (www.doorstepschool.org), an NGO working in Mumbai and Pune, has a vision to be an instrumental force that brings development to these children. Our mission at Door Step School is to bridge the divide between children who do not have access to school and the formal education system which already exists. We use innovative programs that facilitate in bringing education to the children and help them make the transition to literacy and brighter future. Our key goal is primary education to all children up to 14 years of age. Our programs are divided in two main categories:
1. Direct education program - Project Foundation
Children of construction site labourers do not go to school for various reasons. Door Step School sets up temporary education facility with the help of the builders at the construction site. The following programs are run in these facilities:
Literacy (NFE- Non-Formal Education) Classes
Pre-primary Education ( Balwadi)
Day care centers ( Crèche)
Study Classes for (School Going Children) A transport facility is also provided to children who are enrolled in mainstream schools. Details about all the services are given on our website.
2. School Intervention program – Project Grow With Books Door Step School works with Municipal Schools to conduct 90 minute reading classes in the primary schools. The main goal of this program is to enhance reading capabilities of the children and to inculcate reading habits in the children.

2. “Project Foundation” at Door Step School
“Project Foundation” is part of the Direct Education Programme of Door Step
School which addresses the needs of children in the age group of 6 to 14 who do not
have access to formal schools.
Since its inception, Door Step School has seen a steady increase in the number of
sites covered and the number of children brought under its network.
Under Direct Education the following four programmes are conducted-
Balwadi –This programme is for preschoolers in the age group of 3 to 5 years.
Non-Formal Education (NFE) – This programme covers non-school going children in the age group of 6 to 14 years.
Study Classes – This programme caters to school going children in the 1st and 2nd standard.
School on Wheels - These are buses that serve as mobile classrooms to enable us to reach difficult areas or to collect children from smaller sites to one location.
We also have other Supporting Activities under our Direct Education
Programme. The following programmes are conducted-
Crèche – This programme caters to children in the age group of 0 to 3 years.
School Transportation - -It is an added service provided for bring children to municipal schools as well as collecting them from different construction sites to one location for conducting classes.
The Project Foundation also assists in age certificates, school enrolment and
external examinations.
Currently Door Step School has its Direct Education Programme at 90+ construction
and urban community slums in Pune.
Over the years many funding agencies have been supported the “Project
Foundation” program at Door Step School and we thank VIBHA for supporting this
program over the last 3 years.

C. Qualitative Impact
Various competitions are held under Project Grow with Books for the children of the Reading Class
Program in the municipal schools that they attend. Nikita Shinde and Savitri Kale from the Amritvel
center won prizes at these competitions. Shirappa won the second prize.

Children would climb up 11-12 floors with their parents and avoid attending classes. The site
engineer then named two safety officers to ensure that the children went to the classroom.
Children started attending class regularly after this.

DSS distributed the "swacha va Sundar Shala" books, donated by the Kirloskar Foundation, to all
our centers. Teachers used it to teach the children about personal and environmental hygiene. This
has brought about a big change in the children’s attitude towards cleanliness.

Suraj's parents went to their village but he stayed back as he did not want to miss school. He stays at home alone and cooks for himself before going to school. Suraj, who is a student of Std. 5, is very intelligent and hence his parents have enrolled him in a

Five children migrated to shiroor, 120 kms away from Pune and they got admission in
school there and they were in touch with our teachers through the process.
Lakshmi and Shivappa migrated to Karnataka. They contacted our staff and got admission in schools there.
Pappu Yadav of Hattikhana who was studying in the 3rd standard when he was shifted to
Ghodegaon. The concerned coordinator posted his school-leaving certificate to his parents
on their Ghodegaon address. However the certificate never reached his parents. His
parents informed the builder that they did not receive his school-leaving certificate. On the
builders request the coordinator requested the school headmaster for a duplicate certificate.
The head master was very understanding and he issued a duplicate certificate without any
problems. The builder was very helpful and he hand delivered the duplicate certificate to
Pappu’s parents. Pappu could join the school in Ghodegaon. Thus, with the cooperation of
everyone Pappu got admission in a Ghodegaon school.

Sairam of Mont Vert 2 studied in NFE and passed the 4th std. examination externally. He is currently studying in 6th Std. and attends our reference library. Recently his parents shifted to another site at Balewadi. Sairam commutes on bicycle and attends school and reference library regularly. During vacations he does small jobs and earns enough for his school supplies.
Rakhi and Jyoti of Mont Vert-2 shifted to Balewadi just before their external examination was
scheduled. The concerned supervisor brought them back to appear for the examination for
the 3rd standard and both of them passed the examination. In June 2009 they were enrolled
in the 4th Standard. Then they shifted to their native place in Chattisghad. The concerned
Coordinator contacted their parents and took their address and sent their age certificate and
mark list to that address. Using these documents the parents were able to enroll the girls in
a school at Chattisghad.
A Health Check up camp was conducted on 3rd feb by Doctors from DS Medical college. Doctors distributed Dental kits and educated the children them on oral hygiene and now children are in the habit of brushing their teeth regularly.
Mehraj Jelani Sheik of the DSS study center passed third standard with 96% and was first in
her class. Kajal Kamble got 90% in third standard and was ranked third in the class.

Taran's birthday was celebrated in the classroom. His parents came to watch the birthday
celebration as they had never seen one before.
Hemalata’s parents were not sending her for the external examinations because she had the responsibility of taking care of her younger siblings. The parents were worried that if she went for the exam, there would be no one to look after the siblings. Another girl, Jyoti, who lived at the same site offered to take care of Hemlata’s siblings and that gave Hemalata the chance to take the external exam.

When children were absent, we informed the contactor. The contractor spoke to the parents and he warned the parents that Rs. 500 would be cut from their salaries if they did not send their children to school. This definitely increased the parents response and improved attendance.
