Victor Hugo In Guernsey Festival Festival Visitors 2nd to 10th April 2016 The Festival is delighted to be able to bring to Guernsey some of the most notable authorities in the ‘world’ of Victor Hugo. Gérard Pouchain Few people know more about Victor Hugo than Gérard Pouchain, author of Victor Hugo par la caricature and Promenade dans l’Archipel de la Manche avec un guide nommé Victor Hugo. M. Pouchain returns to Guernsey to talk about the caricatures that satirised Hugo during his years of exile – 1855-1870. M. Pouchain’s lecture is a must for both Hugo enthusiasts and those who simply want to learn more about this fascinating character. M. Pouchain is Vice-President of the Society of Friends of Victor Hugo, a member of the Society of Authors of Normandy, the Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Belles Lettres of Bayeux and Caen. Amongst other accolades, M. Pouchain has been awarded the Legion d’Honneur. Jean-Marc Hovasse Victor Hugo specialist Jean-Marc Hovasse comes to Guernsey to celebrate the 150th publication of Hugo’s masterpiece, The Toilers of the Sea. M. Hovasse is the author of a monumental biography of Hugo. Two volumes have been published; the third is scheduled to appear in 2017. Professor Hovasse is the Director of the Centre d’études des correspondances et journaux intimes (a CNRS department attached to the University of Brest). Florence Naugrette Professor Naugrette is a Professor at the Sorbonne, Paris. She is currently overseeing the editing of over 20,000 letters written by Juliette Drouet. This is a major contribution to Hugolien research and is throwing new light on her relationship with Hugo. Professor Naugrette holds a doctorate in theatrical studies for her thesis on the presentation of Victor Hugo’s drama. She has taught at the Universities of Paris, Stanford, Rouen, and currently holds the chair in the history and theory of drama (19th – 20th centuries) at the Sorbonne. Gérard Audinet M. Gerard Audinet, Director of the Maison Victor Hugo in Paris and Hauteville House in Guernsey, will reflect on recent research. Alain Lecompte The Festival is delighted to welcome the Canadian singer and songwriter Alain Lecompte, who will entertain with excerpts from his highly acclaimed ‘Hugo Live’ concert. Author, composer, and performer for more than 20 years, Québecois Alain Lecompte is well known in Canada, the USA, and Europe as an artist with a unique style of playing the piano and speaking the words of Hugo in truly moving performances.
