Editors Letter WelcometothefirsteditionofBritMagazine,aspecialcelebrationofallthingsBritishinFashion,followingthesuccessofthesummerweBritonshadin2012. Withthisismind,wehavecreatedthisissuewithsomeofthemostinfluentialfactorsinBritishFashion,includingmodels,fashionhouses,anddesignersalike.TheissuealsotakesalookintothelifeofDavidBailey,andhisEastEndex-hibitionshowcasingthegreatBritishpublicthroughaseriesofimagescollectedoverBaileyscareer. Thissummer,alongsidetheexcitementoftheLondonOlympics,whichsawtheworldfocusuponthecapital,wewerealsoinvitedtocelebratetheQueen’sdiamondjubilee.ThisgivesusthechancetolooktowardsourotherdistinctiveBritishcharactersinour“BritishNationalTreasures”article,wherewelookatthekeyiconsofBritaintoday,andwhattheyhavebroughttoourcountry.Addtothisour“StarsofaBritishIndustry”articlethatexploresthekeydesignersofthePast,Present,andFutureofBritishFashion,allthearticlesgohandinhand. Wehopeyouwillagreethatthisisdefinitelyaveryspecialissue;theperfectexampleofhowtrulygreatourcountryis,andthatweshouldcelebrateitssuccess.

OneofthemostsignificantdesignerstoinfluencetheBritishfashionindustry,theworldwasshockedtohearofMcQueen’sdeathinFebruary2010.Sentintomourning,designersfromaroundtheworldwerebroughttogethertogivetheirtributestothedesigner.

RecognisedforhisBritishtailoring,McQueenwasbornin1969inLondon,andjoinedanapprenticeshipwithaSavilleRowtailorsnamedAnderson&Sheppard.ItiswiththisexperiencethathebegantobuildhisreputationwithcreatingthedesiredtailoredlookofBritishDesign.

In1994,McQueenappliedtoteachatCentralSaintMartinsCollegeofArtandDesign,andwasencouragedtoenrolonacourseasastudent.Followingthissuccess,hegraduatedfromhismasters,andhisgraduationcollectionwasboughtbyIsabellaBlow.ItwaswiththisthatMcQueenpursuedhisfashioncareerfurther.

Famousforhiscontroversy,andhisshocktacticswithinhisdesignsandpromotionalmedia,McQueenacquiredastreamoftagnamesincluding;“l’enfantterrible”,and“thehooliganofEnglishfashion”.Thisfollowedwithhisrunwayshows.Ahumanchessgame,ashipwreck,andhologramsofBritishsupermodels;anythingoutoftheordinarywasconsideredanddisplayedtothecatwalk.

Ofalltherunwayshowstocausecontroversy,McQueen’s2001VOSScollectionwastheone.Theaudiencewereleftinsuspenseforanhour,asaglassboxwasdisplayedinthemiddleoftheroom,withtheaudiencepositionedaroundit.Withintheboxwerenolights,buttheroomwasilluminatedincredibly.Whatthiscreatedwasamirroredeffect,sothatallcouldbeseenbytheaudiencewastheirownreflectionintheglassbox.Whenthehourwasup,theboxwasilluminatedfromtheinside,andthesidesoftheglassboxfelltothegroundandsmashedtorevealahoardofmoths,andamodel.ThismodelwasBritishwriterMichelleOlley.Completelynaked,andwearingagasmask,McQueensaidthatthismethodofdisplaywasbasedonanimagenameSanitoriumbyJoelPeterWitkin.

PerhapsMcQueen’smostsignificantappointment,hewasappointedasheaddesigneratGivenchyin1996,wherehisinfluenceonfashionmadehiscareer.Butitwasn’tallroses.Thedesignerhadnosoonerstartedatthecompany,whenheinsultedthefounder,andreleasedcollectionsthatweretoocontroversialforGivenchy.Onlyoneofhiscollectionswasspecificallysuccessful,whereamodelwassprayedwithpaintbytworoboticguns,towhichMcQueenleftin2001.

AfterhisdeathinFebruary2010,SarahBurtonwasnameasthenewcreativedirectoroftheAlexanderMcQueenbrandinMay2010,andtheMcQueenbrandliveson.

Famousforthepunkinfluenceinhercollections,andversatilitytoBritishDesign,VivienneWestwoodisoneofthecurrenticonsinBritishFashion,whohasbeenawardedthetitleasBritishDesigneroftheYearthreetimes.BorninApril1941,Westwoodfirstbecameknown,aftershemadeclothesforMalcomMcLaren’sboutiqueintheKing’sRoad,anditwaswiththisabilitytoadapttoacompaniestrendthatstoodout.

BornasVivienneSwire,WestwoodmovedtoHarrowattheageof17.ShestudiedattheUniversityofWestminster,butleftafteroneterm,claimingthatshecouldn’tmakeasuccessoutofworkingintheworldofart.ItwaswiththisthatWestwoodbecameaprimaryschoolteacher,andalsocreatedheronjewellerywhichshesoldonPortobelloRoad.AftermarryingDerekWestwood,thisrelationshipendedwhenshemetMcLaren,andtheymovedintogether.TogethertheysuccessfullyranWestwood’sboutique,nownamedWorldEnds,wheretheVivienneWestwoodlabelisnowsold.

“At one time, I was very angry. I even treated fashion like a kind of crusade: you were either with us or against us, that kind of feeling. Now I know we need ideas, not kicking down a door,”

Evidentinthemajorityofhercollections,Westwoodisconstantlyinfluencedbythepunkphenomenonofthe1970’s,added alongside this the elements of Scottish Design includingtartans,andasasuccesstothishasarangeofstoressituatedacrosstheglobe.Hertasteforfashionmayhavealsostemmedintoherchildren,withhersonJosephCorrefoundingcompanyAgentProvocateur.

Moreprominently,WestwoodcausedcontroversyinApril1989,whensheappearedonthecoverofTatlerdressedasPrimeMinisterMargaretThatcher.ThesuitinwhichshewasmodelledhadoriginallybeenorderedforThatcher,buthadnotarrivedforherintime.Thatcherwasfuriousatthemagazine,butthecoverwaslaterawardedTheBestEverUKMagazineCovers,bytheGuardian.

Throughrecognitionforhersuccesses,WestwoodwasawardedanOBEbyQueenElizabeth||,atBuckinghamPalace.IntrueVivienneWestwoodstyle,shewasknicker-lessattheceremony,caughtbythephotographerswhowerepappingherfrombelowasshetwirledinherskirtaftertheevent.Forservicestofashion,WestwoodwasadvancedfromOBEtoDBEin2006attheNewYear’sHonoursList.

NewtotheBritishfashionindustry,ThomasTaitisoneofthemostsuccessfulupandcomingdesignerstobenamed.TaitisfromMontreal,inCanada,andhavingstudiedatCentralSaintMartins,heissuretobethenameoneveryoneslipsashereleasescollectionaftercollection.WithastyleperhapssimilartoBalenciaga,GarethPugh,andCeline,Taitscollectionscomeacrossasimplistic,butwithasmallburstofcolour.Celebratedforhistechnicaldrawingdesigns,withlinesandcollaboratingshoulderslopes,Tait’sdesignsaresophisticated,andcompelling.Allcollectionscouldbedescribedas‘framingthebody’,anditiswiththisuniquestylethatwillkeepTaitprogressingthroughandthroughasquitepossiblyoneofthemostsuccessfuldesignersinBritishdesignhistory.

“People do refer to my work as minimalism, but I’m not so sure. During the design process there’s a lot of cleaning up that goes on,”

Specifically,theexhibitionfocussesonthreeperiods;60’s,80’s,andthemostrecentyears.ArticlesincludeunseeninformationbeforeontheKraybrothers,whichcouldneverbe published before because of the brothers appearance in courtatthetime.Specifically,theimagesfromthe60’sdepictEastLondonwhichisunrecognisabletoday.Theyshowtheheritageofthetown,andwhatisoncewas.Throughtheexhibition,Baileyhastakenandproducedphotosovertime,leavingandreturningbetweenthedecadestocollatehiscollection.Inrecentimages,Baileyhascapturedthedevelopmentofthetownasitisbeddedoutintoflatstreetsandroadsformorecommercialliving.Whatcan also be noted of the more recent images are the changes incultureofthearea,andhowmultiracecommunitiesarepartofthelivinginBritaintoday.Thecontrastsinculturearedescribedas“stark”,andtheexhibitioncanonlybedescribedatBaileysownpersonalinterpretationofthedevelopmentofourcountryasweknowittoday.

BorninLondon,inSeptember1981,Cottonhasastringofhistorybehindher.Alongwithpresentingchildren’stelevisionshows,mostfamousofallonTheDisneyClub,shehasnowbranchedintouppertelevisionpresenting;theXFactor,ChildreninNeed,andEurovision.Youcouldperhapscallherthe‘now’presenterofBritishbroadcasting,andthissuitsherverywell.

Withastringofrelationships,CottonisnowdatingJesseWood,thesonofRollingStonesguitaristRonnieWood.Theyareexpectingtheirfirstchildtogether,andtheyaresuretobethemostrockfamilyofalltime.

OfallourNationalTreasures,Lily(Cooper)Allenappearstobethemostrecentofthemall.Withacareerspanningacrosssinging,acting,anddesigningforthefashionindustry,AllenisthedaughterofKeithAllenandfilmproducerAlisonOwen.Oncethenaughtychildinapromdressandtrainers,AllenhasgrownintoanEnglishBeauty,andhassincemodelledforChanel,andhadherownfamily.

BorninwestLondon,inMay1985,Allenattendedhigh-costpublicschools,13intotalofwhichshewasexpelledfrommanyofthem.Hersingingcareeractuallystemsfromschoolthough,whereshewasoverheardbyoneofherteacherssinging,andwasinvitedtoattendsinginglessonsoverlunchtimewhilstshewasthere.Afteryearsofbeingrejectedbymusiclabels,whichsheblamedonhersurname,AllenusedherfathersconnectionstogetsignedontoLondonRecordsin2002.ShethenmovedtoRegalRecordingswhofundedherinproducinganalbum,andthisiswhereshecreatedherdemoswhichprovedtobethestartofhersuccessaftershecreatedanaccountonMySpace.

Allen’smusiccareercontinuedtodevelop,anditiswiththisthatbrandsstartedtobecomeattractedtoher.KarlLagerfeldnoticedher,andhiredherforChanel’scampaignin 2009 to promote and advertise their recent line of handbags.ThissawAllenbeginningtodesignherownranges,beforegettingmarriedandhavingherfirstchild.

KateMossisanicon.Ouricon.At38yearsold,shehasstillgotit,andthisshinesthroughinherreputation.Though that is not said that her reputation didn’t get taintedonceortwiceafterherinfamous‘drugscore’,butshehasrebuilt.Companieswanther,andsheisthefaceofBritishModelling.

Bornin1974,inCroydon,Mosswasdiscoveredasamodelin1988atJFKAirportinNewYork.Shortlyafterthis,hercareerbegantoescalateafterCorinneDayshowgreyscalephotosofherforBritishmagazineTheFace,andthiswaswhenMossdevelopedastatementforherself.Asoneofthemostinternationallyrecognisedmodelsofthe90’sandthereforeafter,MosshasbeingthemainfaceofmanycampaignsincludingChanel;CalvinKlein,Rimmel,andBurberry,andthisseesherbeingphotographedbythelikesofMarioTestino,PeterLindbergh,andStevenKlein.Mostrecently,wesawhersuccessbeingcelebratedfurtherwhensheappearedattheLondon2012Olympics,alongsideNaomiCampbell.

Onthehighstreet,MossdesignedarangeofclothesforTopshop,whichwerelaunchedacrosstheUK.Tolaunchthecollection,shestoodinthewindowofTopshop’sflagshipstoreonOxfordStreet,wearingareddressfromthecollection.Ofthefiftydesigns,thepricesrangedfrom£12to£150,sothecollectionwasinstantlysuccessfultoalltypesofcustomersnomatterwhattheirbudget.Withthecollectionssuccess,followeditsreleaseintheUnitedStatesatBarney’s.

Asanoverallcharacter,itisclearthatKateMossisoneoftheiconsofBritain.Wehaveloved,felloutoflove,andregainedourrelationshipwiththemodel.Perhapssheisjustirresistibletous.

In1856,thelateThomasBurberryopenedasmalloutfittersshopinHampshire,agedjust21yearsold.justfourteenyears later the store had developed itself by focusing upon designingoutdoorclothing.AtthistimeThomasBurberryhadnamedhisstore‘Burberry’.Thisthendevelopedintothecompanyproducingwater-resistantfabrics.AlthoughBurberrywastheoriginalname,itchangeditsnameto‘Burberrys’after many of its international customers started to call it ‘BurberrysofLondon’.In1891BurberryopeneditsfirstflagshipstoreinHaymarketinLondonandwaslaterthecompaniesheadquartersbeforechangingthelocationtoHorseferry,alsoinLondon.ThelogoforBurberrywasfinalisedin1901oftheequestriantheme,andcontainedthewordProrsum,meaningforwards.Burberrywascontinuingtobeaverysuccessfulcompany,andin1914theWarOfficeaskedthecompanytoadaptaselectionofitsofficerscoatstoadapttothestyleofwarwear,andtoutiliseitsmaterialsthatithadbeendeveloping,intotheclothing.Theadaptedclothingderivedintohighstreetwearafterthewar,andafterthefamousBurberrycheckhadbeendesigneditwasthenusedtolinethecompaniesfamoustrenchcoats.Fromthenonthecompanyhascontinuedtogrow,buthasserveddroughtsofsalesinthe90’swhenthechavsceneadopted the checked style and copied it a multitude of times.Afterreinventingthebrand,ChristopherBailey(CEO)hastakenthecompanytonewheightsandbroughtbacktheBurberryfeel.Burberry currently operates under four main brands; Burberry Prorsum,BurberryLondon,BurberryBrit,andBurberrySport.

ChristopherBailey,bornin1971,istheChiefCreativeOfficerofBurberry.BorninYorkshire,Baileyisthesonofacarpenter,andawindowdresserforMarksandSpencers.HiseducationhasincludedTheRoyalCollegeofArtwherehegraduatedwithaMastersDegreein1994.HispastemploymenthasincludedworkingforDonnaKarenofDKNYasaWomensweardesigner,andlaterseniordesignerofWomenswearatGuccifrom1196to2001.BaileyjoinedtheBurberryteamin2001asaCreativeDirectorandwasthenpromotedtoCEOin2009.CreditabletoBailey,hisinfluenceonthecompanyshowedwhenBurberryshowedatLondonFashionWeekforthefirsttimein2009.In2005Baileywasname‘DesigneroftheYear’attheBritishFashionAwards,ancontinuestodevelopasoneofthemostsuccessfulfashiondesignersofhistime.Reinventing a company such as Burberry from one that has beencopiedmanytimesover,andhadlostitsindividualedge,hasprovedBaileytobegiventheexcellentreputationthathedeserves.

Developedasanalternativetoheavygreatcoatswornbysoldiersinthewar,theclassicBurberrytrenchcoatisoneoftheworldsmostsuccessfulcoatdesignsclaimedbybothBurberryandheritagebrandAquascutum.ThetrenchcoatwasaclothingitemoftheBritishArmyafterThomasBurberrywascommissionedtodesignapiecefortheOfficers.Afterthewar,thetrenchcoatdevelopedintoapieceofclothingworkbythegeneralpublic,andproceededtobefashionableformanydecadesafterWW2.Thefirsttrenchcoatsreleasedtothepublicwereadvertisedaswaterproof,andthestyleofthattimewasusuallycalflength.Featuringinmanyfilms,adverts,andwornbytheroyalfamily,theBurberrytrenchhasbeenoneofthemosticonicpiecesofthecompany.Today,thedesignofthetrenchcoathasbeentakenanddevelopedintoallstyles,shapes,andcolourseverimaginable,butallwiththesamethemeofthetrench.Thegeneralfitappearstobefitted,belted,andabovetheknee,and the most successful colour still replicates that of the originalBurberrydesign.

Internationallyrecognisedasoneoftheworldsmostsuccessfulclothingbrands,Burberrycancompetewithalmostanyothercompany.Theonlynegativeperhaps,ismaybetheyarebranchingalittletoofarafieldforusBritstoaccesspromptly.

Recently,itwasdisclosedbyKateMossthatthetattooinkedonthebottomofherlowerbackwasdonebyLucienFreud,andisworthmorethan£1million.In2002,MossbefriendedFreud,whowasconsideredtobeoneofthegreatestartistsofthe20thcentury.

ThefriendshipstemsfromwhenMosssaidshewouldlovetomeettheartist,andtheirrelationshipdevelopedfromthere.Fromthis,FreudpaintedaportraitofMossnude,andlater he revealed that he used to ink tattoos on sailorswhenhewasinthenavy,usingascalpel,andink.Theartisttoldherthathecoulddoanupsidedownchickeninabucket,whichKatepolitelysaidnoto.Theyagreedona‘flockofbirds’.MosshadherveryownoriginalFreudimprintedforlife.
