A Victoria Police Department officer has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in connection to a fatal, high-speed crash on Blanshard Street last year.

Darcy David Cole, 29, died when his vehicle slammed into a light standard at Blanshard Street and Cloverdale Avenue around 2:30 a.m. on June 15, 2013.

A VicPD patrol officer had tried to pull Cole over for speeding less than a minute before the crash, but the driver fled. Cole was travelling 162 km/h when he lost control, and his blood alcohol level was significantly above the legal limit.

In his March 28 report, Richard Rosenthal, director of the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., found the VicPD officer called off the high-speed chase and asked dispatch to notify Saanich police of the incident. The officer’s actions did not constitute any criminal wrongdoing, Rosenthal said.

GPS data from the officer’s patrol car show the officer hit speeds of 89 km/h during the chase. Four witness state-ments and police dispatch audio recordings were also reviewed during the independent investigation.

The officer’s claim that he stopped at cross streets dur-ing the chase were inconsistent with GPS data, but that false recollection was not enough to constitute wrongdoing, Rosenthal concluded.

“There is no evidence available to contradict the sub-ject officer’s assertion that if he made a mistake about this detail, it was an honest one,” he said.

Two minutes later, the VicPD officer discovered the wreck-age of Cole’s car in Saanich.

“There is no reason to believe that the subject officer acted outside the ‘standard care of a reasonably prudent’ driver, nor that he ‘departed from the accustomed sober behaviour of a reasonable driver,’” Rosenthal wrote.

The VicPD officer will now be subject to an administra-tive investigation to ensure his actions complied with police training and policies.

“When you’re using native plants, the birds and butterflies know which species they pre-fer,” says Carnahan, land care co-ordinator with Habitat Acquisition Trust. “You don’t even need a bird feeder, the plants will attract the right pollinators.”

Now in its third year, the Victoria Native

Plant Garden Tour brings together a network of garden owners and professional native plant experts at 10 public and private gardens. On May 4, horticultural enthusiasts will lead tours around Haliburton Farm in Saanich, Fort Rodd Hill in Colwood and Uplands Park in Oak Bay, to name a few.

“This is quite a unique region in Canada, it’s got the Garry oak ecosystem here, which is found nowhere else in Canada, it’s a northern Mediterranean climate,” Carnahan says.

Carnahan will host a tour at his own Queens Street garden this year to show off the diverse ways of utilizing backyard space. Camas, an onion-like edible bulb, grow as a living fence along the property line next to ground-covering ferns. Carnahan’s efforts working 300 wheelbar-rows of mulch and a dumpster’s worth of card-

board into the soil has paid off.“Gardening with native plants is actually a

really smart way to go, because these plants evolved in this ecosystem,” he says. “So you’re not using pesticides, they don’t require any spe-cial treatments. You can get a beautiful floral display throughout the year if you use the right plants.”

Tour attendees are encouraged to ask for spe-cific information on plant choices, restoration techniques and gardening tips. Habitat Acquisi-tion Trust also offers consultation for homeown-ers interested in native species conservation and gardening.

Music event gets boost from B.C.

The B.C. government will give $50,000 to support the Capital

Region Music Awards Society’s bid to bring BreakOut West, an annual musical showcase, to Victoria next year.

Combining a music industry conference, a popular music festival and a prestigious awards show into a four-day event, BreakOut West helps Western Canadian musicians showcase their work and build new business connections.

BreakOut West features a variety of music genres.

Students at now defunct West-ern Academy of Photography are waiting to see if their programs will continue through another local school.

Sixteen students discovered last week the private photogra-phy school was closing immedi-ately for financial reasons, while instructors learned of problems on March 19.

“It’s like somebody died,” said

student Nate Clark, who moved to Victoria from Thailand for the one-year program. “A lot of tears between teachers and students.”

Student Melanie Orr knew something was awry at the school when equipment started disappearing from instructor’s classrooms.

She said she’s frustrated the school didn’t inform students about financial difficulties until last week.

“We’ve invested our lives in this program, we give it our all

for 10 months, and to just have that stripped away, leaves you stunned,” she said.

Western Academy’s program manager, Andrea Kucherawy, said the school’s owner, Garry Dodds, is in talks with two local schools to continue Western’s classes until June.

“I’m devastated for our stu-dents and the era that’s come to an end,” Kucherawy said. “This is the school’s 30th year. We’ve produced countless damn good photographers and writers over

those years. If there is a teach-out plan and I’m a part of it, I’m committed to see the students through to the end.”

Should a teach-out plan be approved, students still likely won’t be given a diploma with Western Academy’s certification. That doesn’t sit well with stu-dents.

“We are all strong believers in having Western on our diploma,” Orr said. “They have a reputa-tion for really great training and world-class photographers. To

just have another school issue our diploma would be a slap in the face.”

Despite the closure, both Orr and Clark said they don’t regret attending Western Academy of Photography as its final students.

“I’ve learned so much already,” Clark said.

“I’ve already learned enough that I think I can start a really good career. The only thing missing is a diploma. But all the knowledge is there.”

Solar-powered hot water tanks are the way of the future, and the Capital Regional District wants to kickstart that revolution.

The CRD is offering 100, first come, first served financial grants to help cover the cost of a solar hot water system, mod-elled on a Colwood pilot pro-

gram in operation since 2011.“Solar Colwood has been one

of the most successful solar pro-grams in Canada, second only to the nearby T’Sou-ke First Nation for the number of solar systems per capita,” said Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton.

“We’re excited to partner with the CRD to extend the grants to residents throughout the Capital Region and allow more homes

and businesses to benefit from free, renewable energy.”

The grants, funded through the federal Clean Energy Fund, cover up to a third of the cost of solar panelling and a hot water tank. After incentives, the sys-tem costs about $5,500.

Region offers solar clean energy fund


The opening this weekend of a purpose-built rental building in Victoria’s Hudson dis-trict is part of a bigger rental revival taking place across the city, says Mayor Dean For-tin.

City hall approved $290 million in con-struction permits in 2013, and Fortin said there are more cranes in Victoria’s skyline today than during the city’s last building boom in 2006.

“This is part of mov-ing forward the idea of having districts throughout down-town,” Fortin said at the Hudson Mews’ unveil-ing Wednesday.

The 120-unit rental building, located at 780 Fisgard St., will provide 83 one-bedroom and 37 two-bedroom rental apartments, and fill a demand for rental prop-erties in the downtown core, Fortin said.

Last week, Victo-ria council approved another all-rental devel-opment, a 138-unit, three-tower complex at the corner of Cook and Pandora streets.

“This is exactly what we want to see, and when we talk to resi-dents, this is what they want to see,” Fortin said.

The completion of Hudson Mews marks the latest chapter in the ongoing development of the Hudson district, said Rick Ilich, Townline president and owner. Townline is putting for-ward its next develop-

ment application to city hall staff next week for an adjacent building.

“The district really is taking on a life of its own, anchored around the Victoria public market,” he said. Ilich thanked the public for their patience after a

vandalism incident last November caused con-struction delays to Hud-son Mews.

Coun. Charlayne Thornton-Joe said the city is finally seeing the benefit of focusing on district creation across the downtown core.

“All of these models of anchoring our busi-nesses and residents around districts started with Chinatown,” she said. “It’s exciting to see this latest project mov-ing from concept to reality.”[email protected]

Monk Office has taken the idea of giving back to the community to new heights.

The Victoria-based business with 10 stores from Victoria to Port Hardy raised $5,330 during the United Way of Greater Victoria’s annual fundraising campaign.

financial officer Ross Hill also joined the United Way’s campaign cabinet.

“It’s part of our work culture to give back to our communities,” said Catherine Novak, Monk’s director of com-

munications and mar-keting.

“We have really good leadership. We don’t just pay lip service. Our management team gets out and helps fundraise and that encourages our staff.”

But it’s not just the United Way.

Monk Office also helps with many other organizations in Greater Victoria and throughout the Island, including Mustard Seed Church and Food Bank, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Surrounded By Cedar and school par-ent advisory commit-tees.

Heather Skydt, United Way’s direc-tor of marketing and communications, said Monk’s ran an excep-tional campaign.

“They participated in (United Way) training, created opportunities for employees to learn about United Way with community partner and donor presenta-tions and contributed a corporate match,” she said.

In additions to Monk’s award, the United Way handed out 11 other awards from outstanding campaign committee to leader-ship on March 28.

Kootenay Bill Bennett has done what I reported last November he was doing: seizing the horns of the sacred cow that is the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Henceforth there shall be two land reserves. The Island, South Coast and Okanagan, which produce 85 per cent of B.C.’s total farm revenue on 10 per cent of protected land, retains its strict anti-development rules.

In the much larger area Bennett likes to call “beyond Hope,” non-farm uses will be considered to help maintain the many economically marginal farmers.

This is the Interior, Kootenay and North, where development pressure is mostly an urban myth. In remote areas, ALR diktats with no relation to reality are routinely ignored.

Political critics were quick to call this a B.C. Liberal hidden agenda to pave the ALR for their developer pals.

Certainly neither party’s 2013 platform talked about the ALR, although B.C. Liberal leadership candidates Kevin Falcon and Mike de Jong promised relief from its more senseless bureaucracy to Peace country farmers in 2011.

When the zone plan was revealed last week, media went to ALR pioneer Harold Steves, the hero of all Lower Mainlanders who try to tell northern farmers what to do.

“My real fear is that they want to open the door for fracking and natural gas and oil,” Steves said.

I’ve got bad news for the socialist sage of south Richmond. Oil and gas companies have operated on

farmland since before the ALR was created in 1974.

Conspiracy buffs should read the delegation agreement that took effect just weeks after last May’s election, giving the Oil and Gas Commission authority to administer wells, pipelines and waste pits on farmland.

If the ALR interferes with the prescribed handling of drilling waste, it interferes with safety measures.

University of the Fraser Valley “food security” professor Lenore Newman went on CKNW to refute what she called “uninformed arguments,” and then offered one of her own. This two-zone change is connected to the exclusion of large tracts of Peace land for the Site C dam, she said.

Actually, the government exempted that project last December using the long-standing “provincial interest” provision, so this phase of the alleged capitalist plot against farmland has no effect on Site C.

Steves is also concerned about second homes being built beyond Hope, and later sold rather than being destroyed as is the current disastrous rule.

He warns that farmers might end up with “non-farm neighbours,” or as we like to call them up north, “neighbours.”

Again, this is an urban problem projected onto rural B.C., where costly restrictions mainly serve to accelerate the depopulation of rural and remote areas.

Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington is livid about the legislation, which has no effect on loss of farmland in her constituency.

The growing federally regulated port supersedes provincial laws, and the Tsawwassen First Nation is growing a big shopping centre on its treaty land.

Aboriginal entrepreneurs are also starting to force big-box development on southern Vancouver Island, home of the purest of the pure left.

This is where farmers can’t even protect themselves against deer.

The most damning charge is that the six regional ALR panels now in place are open to corruption under new rules.

Panel members have always been cabinet appointments, but currently they have to be from outside the region so they are less likely to hand out exemptions to their friends.

That is certainly something to keep an eye on.

So is the status of B.C. farms, where the average farmer age is 56 and rising, and half of farms have income less than $10,000 a year.

Home sales during the month of March were up 20 per cent from the same time last year in Greater Victoria as the busier real estate season continues to ramp up.

The Victoria Real Estate Board reports 575 properties were sold in March, compared to 483 in March 2013.

Average sales for the month of March over the past five years is 607 properties per month, how-ever, which reveals sales haven’t yet returned to pre-recession highs.

“This time last year sales weren’t outstanding – the mar-ket was sluggish,” said Tim Ayres, Victoria Real Estate Board president.

“Tightened mortgage amorti-zation rules resulted in slower

sales as buyers adjusted to the new requirements. Property val-ues were stable, but inventory didn’t move quickly.”

The Victoria Real Estate Board uses the MLS® Home Price Index to report on property values.

The HPI uses the concept of a benchmark home, a notional home with common attributes of typical homes in a defined area.

Through the analysis of ten years of Victoria Real Estate Board MLS sales data, the MLS HPI defined benchmark homes for single family homes, town-houses, condos and for each neighbourhood.

The benchmark starting point was 2005, where each type of property and neighbourhood was assigned an HPI index

139.3, compared to 139.1 this time last year.

While these overall numbers indicate little change in the last 12 months, some areas have changed more than others, Ayres said.

“The stable property values year over year, along with the strong inventory of properties we see for sale, shows that we have returned to balanced mar-ket conditions.

“There is no extreme upward or downward pressure on hous-ing prices right now.

Deal could broker Island rail resurgence

A tentative deal between Southern Railway and Via Rail could see the return of rail passenger service to Vancouver Island.

The new deal, announced at a press conference Tuesday, will allow the Island Corridor Foundation and Southern Railway to access more than $20 million in funding for track and bridge improvements through the partnership of federal, provincial and regional governments, accord-ing to foundation co-chairwoman Mary Ashley.

Freight and train operations will be based out of Nanaimo and will run as far north as Courtenay and south as Victoria, including an early-morning route to the provincial capital.

The schedule will have to go through some adjustments, how-ever, and there is no set date for when everything will be up and run-ning, said Ashley.

“There’s much work to do before the passenger train whistle blows again,” said Ashley. “The agreement is to be ratified by the three respec-tive boards, funding agreements will be signed off, tendering and award-ing of bids will proceed and there will be approximately nine months of track work.”

The foundation has stated that it will cost more than $100 million for repairs.

Island Corridor Foundation chief executive officer Graham Bruce said the repairs will come incrementally over the next few years.

“The report of 2009-10, from the Ministry of Transportation, looked at an initial report that had been done and came back and said that there was no way anyone was going

to put $110 million into the railway,” Bruce said. “If we approached it on an incremental basis, there was a plan that could be developed and that’s what we developed with Southern Rail, to bring passenger rail back.

“So that gives us 10 years of oper-ation and allows the rail company to expand out on other types of opera-tions. There’s different examples that have been spoken about and how that might occur.

“Each one of them would have their own package, depending where they were running, of other infrastructure improvements and dollars would be found to look after that.”

Regional District of Nanaimo directors voted recently to withhold about $945,000 in funding to the foundation until passenger service returns to the Island and according to regional district chairman Joe Stanhope, while the announcement is good news, the funding will not be released yet.

“I still think there’s another bridge to cross and that is the infrastruc-ture deficit is well over $20 million,” Stanhope said.

Passenger rail was discon-tinued in spring 2011 due to unsafe track conditions.

According to Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan, also a regional district director, $20 million is not enough to get everything

fully operational, but it’s a good start.

“While we didn’t get all the money we wanted, $20 mil-lion will be enough to start the service and hopefully, as the passenger traffic grows and the

freight traffic grows, that will enable the governments to look at a bigger investment, once the business case is built by actu-ally running the train,” Ruttan said.

Arts council on right course

For the past month in Esquimalt, the Township Community Arts Council has been working behind the scenes and getting a lot accomplished. On the surface the formation of the arts council might seem to be just another arts group and hold little significance in the bigger picture of community life.

But in reality, the arts council has the opportunity to create civic pride and at the same time help create a vibrant economy for the township.

So far, the council has announced three major arts events for this summer, and one – Sculpture Splash – has the potential to gain international significance on the world stage, if it is given time to nurture and grow. Other events for later in the year are in the planning stages. The spin-off effect would see a series of sustainable annual events that people will look forward to every year, and businesses can benefit from.

The arts council has the opportunity to create something special for Esquimalt. It can not only create a buzz within the township but in the region, it can engage the community through active participation. What that will result in is a greater sense of residents’ connection to the community.

The task won’t be easy, nor will it be an overnight success. Money is scarce for arts groups now, with provincial and federal governments continuing to cutback. Township council, however, has given the group seed money and other funding has come from other non profits and the business community.

It is this kind of support that is encouraging to the arts council’s small board of seven directors which is enthusiastic, full of many ideas and committed to making it a success.

It is also encouraging that local politicians see the value of such a grassroots organization, which will produce huge dividends in the years ahead.

The provincial government has tabled legislation to make municipal council terms four years instead of three, as of 2018.

This appears to be a step in the wrong direction.

Sadly, some of the people holding municipal office have demonstrated their intransigence and lack of interest in prevailing public opinion on some major issues of late - the Blue Bridge, sewage treatment and the kitchen scrap programs come to mind.

Instituting four-year terms for municipal councils, without an effective means of removing them from office early, is a recipe for abuse and misuse. If these elected municipal officials get even longer terms, they might feel less inclination to listen to majority public sentiment in non-election years.

The preferable alternative might be two-year terms for municipal councils.

Literacy funding cut ‘heartbreaker’

This program has been a godsend to children and adults.

It is brutally selfish when we read in the paper repeatedly about senior government employees and even their spouses submitting first-class airline fares, five-star hotels and extravagance in every sense of the word, including food. And yet a mere $30,000 across all of B.C. for a literacy program dies.

It’s poetry from the heart from the some of the city’s best young poets.

The fifth annual Vic-torious Voices poetry slam takes place at the Victoria Events Center next week (April 7 to 9).

Eight teams com-prised of high school students from the lower Island will com-pete for the Victori-ous Voices title. They have three minutes to perform original group works and individual poems.

“It’ll blow you away,” said Victorious Voices director Jeremy Love-day. “These youth speak their truth pow-erfully. The best way to celebrate their voices is to come and listen, really listen.”

Semi-finals begin at 7 p.m. on April 7, where the eight teams will be cut to four.

Audience members are invited to boo the judges and cheer wildly throughout the night. They will also be asked to judge the competi-tors on a scale of 1-10.

There will also be an alumni showcase on April 8 at Solstice Cafe, featuring some of Victoria’s most tal-ented young spoken word artists. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.

he government has declared March 31 to April 6 “Make-a-Will Week” to encourage more British Columbians to create a

Will or bring an existing Will up-to-date. This coincides with a Mustel Group poll conducted this month for the Society of Notaries Public of BC that found only 55% of adults in British Columbia have a current and legal Will.

The Mustel Group poll, conducted by telephone from March 7 to 19, included 502 adults in BC, and found that only 20% of people in the 18-to-34 age range, 51% between 35 and 54, and 83% of individuals over 55 have a Will in place.

“No one wants to think about dying, so for most people the hardest part about making a Will is taking the first step toward making plans and booking an appointment with a Notary or lawyer,” says Kristy Martin, a Langford Notary. “That said, most people are surprised at how easy it is to create a Will, once they set their mind to it, and find the process leads to important discussions and decisions. For many

clients, creating a Will brings families closer and creates more certainty and peace of mind for everyone.”

A Will is the best way to ensure that the people, charities or non-profit organizations you care about receive the benefit of your estate. If there is no Will in place, or the Will is not properly prepared, an estate may not be distributed as the deceased intended.

The costs of administering the estate may be higher if a legally enforceable Will does not exist.

“I’ve witnessed first-hand the tremendous angst and difficulty a family

experiences when there is no Will. It can take years to unravel and sort through at excessive legal cost to the survivors,” says Laurie Salvador, a Notary in Sidney. “An even greater concern is the lack of a Will leaves your children vulnerable to wait in foster care while courts decide

on a suitable guardian. Whereas, a Will empowers you to nominate someone you trust to take immediate care of your minor children.”

A carefully planned estate can eliminate or at least reduce stress, taxes and conflict amongst loved ones of the deceased. Without a will there can be doubt, anxiety, stress, hurt feelings, and delays in administering the estate. There is even uncertainly about what the final funeral arrangements should be and who should pay for them. The kindest thing you can do for your loved ones is to leave your affairs in good order.

Kia taking on the small cars from the big guys

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Kia rounds out its attack on the country’s best-sell-ing cars with the launch of the final two models to the Forte lineup.Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyun-dai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships.The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego. The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast. LooksThe Forte5 is the more practical of the two new Kias with a hatchback design that sets it apart from the competition. Many competitors don’t offer a hatch so this is sure to be noticed by people who need extra storage and passenger room. Sold with a new base 2.0L engine or an optional 1.6L turbo engine, there are varied looks depending on which trim is chosen. The non-turbo Forte5 gets a front grille similar to the sedan with a smaller lower intake and a larger grille opening. The Forte5 SX turbo gets the same grille as the Koup, with the opposite

front treatment, a bigger lower opening and a smaller, more aggressive grille. The great news is that all Forte5 and Koup models come with alloy wheels; 16-inches on the Forte5 and 18-inch alloys on the turbo version. The Koup has 17-inch base alloys or 18-inches on the turbo.InsideI drove the top Turbo version of the Forte5 and the base, non-turbo version of the Koup. Both have an amazing level of interior refinement. If you have ever questioned that Kia knows how to make good quality cars, just look at these new products. The switches and dials look and feel first rate and the layout is logical and easy to use. Koup can actually fit adults up to six feet. The dash has either a conventional radio layout with a smaller screen but when the backup camera is added on either model, the screen jumps to 6-inch-es and becomes a touchscreen device. If the buyer wants the navigation system, then the top turbo model with luxury package is needed. The front seats sit high off the floor for good outward visibility. What continues to amaze me is the level of equipment Kia offers from standard Bluetooth and satellite radio to optional heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, power folding outside mirrors and more. True luxury touches.DriveKia has put some punch into both the base and turbo versions of the Forte5 and Koup. The base engine is a large 2.0L direct injection engine with 173hp. In comparison, the top selling Civic has 143hp. The turbo model gets a 1.6L direct

injection engine with a solid 201hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque that comes on at a very low 1750 RPM. The turbo also gets a stiffer suspension, bigger wheels, sharper steering feel and shorter gear ratios from first to third gear. This makes the car livelier and handles better but it also makes the car a bit twitchy on the highway when driving straight.

The base 2.0L would be my choice. 173hp is loads for a car of this size and the smaller wheels and less aggressive suspension might be a better day-to-day driver. Ei-ther way, Kia has kicked things up a notch and both are fun to drive and never feel underpowered.

VerdictThe Forte5 starts at $19,495 and tops out at $28,395 for a turbo with navigation. The Koup comes with a few extra standard features and it runs from $20,895-$28,695. Some might think that the higher end models are getting expensive but they have features such as dimming rearview mirrors, power outside mirrors and heated rear seats that are not generally avail-able in this class.Kia has been growing steadily since it entered Canada 15 years

Helping get through motoring madnessDear Reader:After I get this off my chest, I am going to feel a whole lot better but I doubt you will.For it is my hope that you will be mad as hell and want to tell. We will get to that later so bear with me.I have been writing about cars, driving, and traffic safety for more than 25 years. I got into this by acci-dent, no pun intended. I had been covering the often-grisly crime beat for some years when the late Vancouver Police Supt. John Lucy told me in the late 1980s that he was transferring to the traffic division. I blanched. This guy had set up the strike force and dealt with vice in the big city. “You want blood and guts, Morgan, come and talk to me in traffic,” he said dramatically.I did and he was absolutely right. The needless carnage on our roads was, and is to this day, almost unbelievable. I say almost because the more you observe human nature the less incredible motoring mayhem appears. Simple math reveals that in order to shave even five minutes off a typical commute you have to exceed the speed limit excessively and run some very late reds. That kind of driving drives me crazy and now we get

to the nub of this column. Telling you what sends me off the edge is a form of therapy that invariably evolves into group therapy. Hence, our weekly “What Drives U Crazy?” spot in Driveway, in which we encourage you to reveal what poor driving habits send you off the deep end. Your correspondent also has a less selfish wish that by identifying this appalling behaviour we could educate the sources of our collective annoyance. I know that might be considered dreaming but let’s give it the old college try.When I talk about what burns me at gatherings, people usually say “don’t get me started” then pro-ceed to regale me with their pet peeves. As that is the purpose of this exercise, let me get you started.Five things that drive me nuts, a short putt I know. 1. Those who either won’t move more than their front wheels into an intersection on a green light or remain behind the line.2. Drivers who let cars stack up behind them because they want to make a left over a solid white centre line.3. Weaver birds who race down the curb lane then cut into traffic when they near a parked car.4. Impatient folks who try to swing around you dangerously as you proceed to park at the curb. 5. People who signal a left as the light changes to green.That last example makes me want to ram the offender through the intersection. Many more manoeuvres needle me. However, I’ll get off the couch now because I think I may have got you riled enough to share your road rage.What Drives U Crazy? – Tell me. You will feel much better for having done so. I promise.

Five misleading car namesFew things in the develop-ment of a new car are more crucial than the name.

In the case of a bland or mediocre car, it’s the last chance the marketers have

to generate some buzz. That may well be why some of the most ordinary cars have wound up with some of the

fiercest and flashiest names. Here are five inappropriate-ly named cars:1. Chevrolet Sprint – The

Sprint was built by Suzuki for Chevrolet. Pow-ered by a rather anemic three-cyl-inder engine, its acceleration off the line resem-bled not so much a sprint but more of a drunken stumble. Its Suzuki-badged counterpart was known by an equally inappro-priate name, the Swift.2. Mercury Bobcat – A bobcat is a rather fierce North American wild cat. The Mercury Bobcat, on the other hand, was essentially a fancy Ford Pinto over laden with chrome trim and other options that added on additional pounds, sacrific-ing what little performance the Pinto possessed. While the feline bobcat is plentiful in the wild, the Mercury version is all but extinct.3. Hyundai Excel — The Excel was first car sold by Hyundai in the U.S., and given the top-to-bottom excellence of the current Hyundai lineup, it’s prob-ably a car they’d prefer to forget. Other than cheap-

ness, the Excel essentially excelled at nothing — unless someone handed out an award for “crudest interior” or “oddest-smell-ing plastic.”4. AMC Hornet – The hornet is one pugnacious insect, and as anyone who has ever been on the wrong side of one can attest, they definitely can sting. With the exception of the rare S/C 360 version from 1971, the AMC Hornet was a pleasant-looking and practi-cal compact sedan/wagon/hatchback without much of a sting.5. Hudson Jet — Jet planes were on the mind of nearly every car designer and ad man in

the U.S. during the 1950s. Fins, bogus jet intakes, jet exhausts and jet hood ornaments found their way onto countless cars from that decade. Curiously, the Jet wasn’t among them. There was nothing even slightly swoopy or jet-like about the Hudson Jet. The Dodge Dart has held its own in a sporty compact segment where competition is fierce.Perhaps it is because of its value, the various engine choices or that it has some pretty cool features (like available under-the-front-seat-cushion storage) and a fresh style – inside and out – the Dart seems to be a hit.Two years in, Chrysler has loaded it up with an engine full of gusto, unique styling cues and added a couple of letters on the back and now we have the Dodge Dart GT.What sets it apart from its siblings are a stretched-down grille and LED head-lights. You’ll find the rear clad with the ‘racetrack’ LED lights that run the full length of the trunk.Then there’s a set of 18-inch wheels come standard on this vehicle along with a 2.4L, MultiAir, four-cyl-inder Tigershark engine, matched with a six-speed manual transmission, that brings to the pavement 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. Of all the characteristics I like about this trim of Dart, I think its transmission is the weakest link. In previ-ous reviews of other Dart models – like the 1.4L, Tur-bocharged version with 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque – the gear throws are, in my opinion, too long to really give it that edge and sporty vibe that it needs to compete with vehicles like the VW GTI, Honda Civic Si or even the Ford Focus ST. The gear throws are long and the clutch has little weight to it, taking away the performance aspect of the GT that it should have.On the flip side, the light clutch works favourably in the urban environment. This setup makes being stuck in traffic bearable.Getting back to the gear-box, I really wanted to like

the Dart more. I really did. So I concocted scenarios in my mind to figure out a way to not be so sad about its lack of panache. I think I found one. Buyers of the GT will like what they get for the value.After all, it has a starting MSRP of $21,995. That’s thousands less than the aforementioned compet-itors. And some buyers of vehi-cles who want that extra kick don’t necessarily need all the sports sedan-like characteristics. They want power but in a comfortable and affordable package.Furthermore, they enjoy added touches like a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, GT specific sport leather seats, a park view rear backup camera and more. The interior has a pleasant look to it and it’s very agreeable to drive. On the highway, special attention from designers and engineers were paid to make sure you drive in a quiet cabin.Minimal road noise entered the GT’s cabin, allowing my passengers and I to enjoy the musical stylings of var-ious bands being listened to on the Alpine premium stereo system with nine speakers (an additional $1,295 for this sun and sound package.) The sun

portion of the package adds a power express open/close sunroof to the mix.After I switched into this mindset, I found I was able to alleviate my frustrations of what the GT didn’t have, but what it did have.Additionally, a feature that I love about the Dart – and all other Dodge/Jeep/Chrys-ler products – is the Uco-nnect media interface. The GT comes standard with the 8.4-inch touchscreen and

is a dream to work with. Large icons, easy prompts and a no-fuss approach to pairing your handheld device to the Bluetooth system all come standard.Whether taking the GT for a drive in the city or on the open road, it does have some solid legs to stand on. Visit www.dodge.ca for more information.

Noodling on the web one morning I found out that I was selling vehicles illegally. If I was in the business of selling, I need to be licensed as a dealer.Oh well. Everything’s been working out just fi ne for me. I skated through those recent bad deals. My previous sales were a distant memory – I was eager to start selling more. So, I decided to up my game a bit. I got a low-end truck and a car from an auction and another car from a new parking lot friend. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is fl exible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice?The fi rst two cheaper vehicles sold quickly.The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask?Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the fi rst two. I had no information on the last.So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.”I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back.Four days later, I got a call from a young

woman. She asked if the car would fi t a family of four. “Defi nitely!” I practically screamed. I was a wreck during this sale. I just needed to get rid of this car – fast. I told the nice lady the details of the car. Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice!I told her I was in a hurry to visit my mum in the hospital. She was in a hurry too – her three-year-old was anxious, pulling at her pant legs. She seemed to not want to be there as much as me. Finally, she agreed to buy the car. Phew! I was saved. Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine.I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to fi nd me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.

Organizers expect an empowering environ-mental youth festival to draw hundreds of stu-dents from as far afield as the Lower Mainland to Claremont secondary.

“We’re attracting a lot of students from across the province,” said Grade 12 student Jeff Lewis-Manning, among the organizers of the 4th Annual YesBC Youth Cli-mate Action Summit and Off the Grid Music Festi-val at Claremont.

The festival shifts to

Claremont from the West Shore where it was held near the end of May for the past three years and included the Fort Rodd Hill outdoor venue for the concert. Claremont offers a more weather-proof indoor venue for the April 17 summit and festival.

“We found that even at the end of May it was a bit late to catch the senior students, who are busy with exams then,” said Judy Fainstein, founder of YesBC (Youth for Envi-

ronmental Stewardship). “We’re trying something different this year, and everything’s going to be at the school, Claremont secondary. We hope the students take more own-ership of the event.”

She hopes to hit 200 to 300 students this year with the by-registration summit for middle and secondary students dur-ing the day, and the pub-lic concert after school hours.

“A lot of this is student-led so it’s been an evolv-

ing thing, where over the years little by little students have taken on more leadership roles,” Fainstein said.

Topics for the student-led workshops this year include green careers, food security, youth activism and social media for social change.

Claremont will utilize its work at Haliburton Farm as its session dur-ing the summit, taking a group out for a tour of the farm.

Other area schools

including Reynolds and Oak Bay are set to pres-ent among the 12 work-shops organized so far.

“It’s providing stu-dents with great lead-ership opportunities because not only are we facilitating workshops, people will be giving presentations and we’ve been organizing every-thing,” Lewis-Manning said. “Engaging the com-munity is a big part of it. We’re basically ambassa-dors for YesBC and the community.”

Guests include Saa-nich-Gulf Island MP Elizabeth May, Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver and Saa-nich South MLA Lana Popham.

The day winds up with the Off The Grid festival that celebrates youth empowerment in environmental steward-ship, with live music, art, demonstrations and information booths from local sustainability lead-ers. Local bands Mindil Beach and Carmanah

will perform this year on the stage run entirely on human and solar power.

The community is invited for the free Off the Grid Festival starting at 3 p.m. at Claremont school, 4980 Wesley Rd.

“I’m looking forward to the whole bike stage that’s going to power everything,” Lewis-Man-ning said.

The Victoria Royals will advance to the second-round of the Western Hockey League playoffs for the first time in franchise history tonight (April 4) when they faceoff against the Portland Winter-hawks.

But it won’t be easy against the heavily favoured Winterhawks.

The Winterhawks have won their last 11 games, 32 out of the last 33, and last week they scored three goals in 56 seconds against the Vancouver Giants to sweep their opening series. The Royals took out the Spokane Chiefs in four straight games.

The Royals-Winterhawk series begins in Port-land tonight for the first two games of the series. The teams play in Victoria on Monday and Tues-day.

“Obviously, we’re excited,” said Royals head coach Dave Lowry. “We’re heading into new terri-

tory for our hockey club. We have the opportunity to take on one of the top teams in the country and it’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Lowry believes the tough odds only make the players more determined than ever to beat their opponents.

“Nobody expects us to win, so it’s a great feeling for us,” said Lowry. “We’re going to have to play our best hockey and hopefully, they’ll have a little chink in their armour.”

Royals goalie Patrick Polivka, 20, has the oppor-tunity to showcase his skills this weekend. He has performed extremely well in the post-season, allowing only three goals on 55 shots to end the series against the Chiefs, finishing with a .945 save percentage.

This weekend the pressure on Polivka will be extreme, and he’ll have to overcome any doubts to give Royals’ star forwards a chance to work their magic.

Victoria Mariners are set to take part in one of the biggest pre-season baseball showcases in the Best of the West tournament held at McArthur Island Park in Kamloops starting tomorrow.

“This showcase tournament is considered to be one of the best pre draft tournaments in the coun-try for scouts to assess the West Coast talent prior to the MLB June amateur draft,” said Marty Lehn of Big League Experience.

Ten invited teams will be competing from B.C. and Alberta.

Oak Bay Heritage Commission hopes to have Trial Island Lighthouse designated a national, heritage lighthouse.

The commission has been anxiously waiting since May 2012 for the federal government’s decision, which can come anytime from now to May 2015. So far, four B.C. lighthouses have received the designation, including Fisgard in Colwood and Estevan Point on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. A heritage designation would protect the lighthouse from being altered, decommissioned or unmanned without community involvement.

There has been a lighthouse on Trial Island since 1906 and commission chair Bronwyn Taylor said safety is one reason to maintain it.

“The Trial Island lighthouse has saved lives,” Taylor said, explaining the water in that area can be treacherous due to the current and shallow depth. “It is particularly important as a marine aid and will be even more important if the oil tankers get to

go up and down the coast.”Taylor also said the Island is

an ecological preserve as it has indigenous plants that can’t be found anywhere else, which

is one reason why visiting the Island is not encouraged.

To engage the community, Grade 6 students from Monterey Middle school created a collage

of the lighthouse and they were recognized at a special event on by Oak Bay council. Former senator Pat Carney, who championed for the Heritage

Lighthouse act, was also be in attendance.

Heritage commission volunteer Tara Smith said the lighthouse has been a visual, symbolic part of Oak Bay’s heritage for more than a century.

“When you ride your bike, drive your car, or go out boating, you see it and we can relate to it everyday,” Smith said. “Trial Island and its physical viewscape is one of its most redeeming features.”

During heritage week in February the B.C. Maritime Museum featured the Trial Island lighthouse with a display.

The days of bidding wars on Greater Victoria homes and deals being written on the kitchen table after a viewing seem like the distant past when considering today’s resi-dential real estate market.

Agents who have spoken to Home-finder in the past have said that’s a good thing, in that it not only allows them to spend more time working with clients to determine the right price for which to sell their home, it can give sellers more certainty and understanding of the market.

“In this kind of market, if a seller is really well prepared, for example, if the house is really well presented and ready to go, they’re going to find their experience is that much better than someone who isn’t prepared,” said Victoria Real Estate Board presi-dent Tim Ayres.

The stability of the market these days means sellers are not having to take a huge drop from their asking price, he said.

With no real upward or downward pressure on prices, the decision to sell can be one that comes when moving “feels right” to the home-owner, Ayres said.

There are still people who are not as motivated to sell and delay put-ting their home on the market, in an attempt to ride an upward wave and maximize the amount they’ll receive. Doing so can be a mug’s game, he said.

“I think timing the market is always impossible. You’ll never

know whether it was a good time to buy or sell until a few months down the road.”

In general, there is still enough product out there for buyers to be able to take their time. Conversely, sellers are also going to have to be patient, he said.

There are some exceptions to that rule, however.

As Ayres said, well-prepared, well-priced homes are still getting snapped up quickly. As well, prop-

erties in Oak Bay, Fairfield, Gordon Head and the family friendly Saanich West neighbourhoods of Glanford, Layritz and Northridge are proving popular right now, from a price and location perspective.

As well, the $400,000 to $600,000 price range seems to be a “sweet spot” for homes right now, he added.

Looking at the sales figures for Greater Victoria, sellers have reason to be optimistic.

In March, 575 properties were

sold, spread through the vari-ous residential categories. That’s a bump of nearly 20 per cent over March 2013, when the trickle-down effects of the global recession were being felt more strongly and such factors as tighter mortgage restric-tions were still pretty fresh.

Looking longer-term, the five-year average for March is 607 sales, show-ing that things are gradually getting back to normal in the region’s real estate market.

Kia taking on the small cars from the big guys

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Kia rounds out its attack on the country’s best-sell-ing cars with the launch of the final two models to the Forte lineup.Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyun-dai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships.The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego. The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast. LooksThe Forte5 is the more practical of the two new Kias with a hatchback design that sets it apart from the competition. Many competitors don’t offer a hatch so this is sure to be noticed by people who need extra storage and passenger room. Sold with a new base 2.0L engine or an optional 1.6L turbo engine, there are varied looks depending on which trim is chosen. The non-turbo Forte5 gets a front grille similar to the sedan with a smaller lower intake and a larger grille opening. The Forte5 SX turbo gets the same grille as the Koup, with the opposite

front treatment, a bigger lower opening and a smaller, more aggressive grille. The great news is that all Forte5 and Koup models come with alloy wheels; 16-inches on the Forte5 and 18-inch alloys on the turbo version. The Koup has 17-inch base alloys or 18-inches on the turbo.InsideI drove the top Turbo version of the Forte5 and the base, non-turbo version of the Koup. Both have an amazing level of interior refinement. If you have ever questioned that Kia knows how to make good quality cars, just look at these new products. The switches and dials look and feel first rate and the layout is logical and easy to use. Koup can actually fit adults up to six feet. The dash has either a conventional radio layout with a smaller screen but when the backup camera is added on either model, the screen jumps to 6-inch-es and becomes a touchscreen device. If the buyer wants the navigation system, then the top turbo model with luxury package is needed. The front seats sit high off the floor for good outward visibility. What continues to amaze me is the level of equipment Kia offers from standard Bluetooth and satellite radio to optional heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, power folding outside mirrors and more. True luxury touches.DriveKia has put some punch into both the base and turbo versions of the Forte5 and Koup. The base engine is a large 2.0L direct injection engine with 173hp. In comparison, the top selling Civic has 143hp. The turbo model gets a 1.6L direct

injection engine with a solid 201hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque that comes on at a very low 1750 RPM. The turbo also gets a stiffer suspension, bigger wheels, sharper steering feel and shorter gear ratios from first to third gear. This makes the car livelier and handles better but it also makes the car a bit twitchy on the highway when driving straight.

The base 2.0L would be my choice. 173hp is loads for a car of this size and the smaller wheels and less aggressive suspension might be a better day-to-day driver. Ei-ther way, Kia has kicked things up a notch and both are fun to drive and never feel underpowered.

VerdictThe Forte5 starts at $19,495 and tops out at $28,395 for a turbo with navigation. The Koup comes with a few extra standard features and it runs from $20,895-$28,695. Some might think that the higher end models are getting expensive but they have features such as dimming rearview mirrors, power outside mirrors and heated rear seats that are not generally avail-able in this class.Kia has been growing steadily since it entered Canada 15 years

Helping get through motoring madnessDear Reader:After I get this off my chest, I am going to feel a whole lot better but I doubt you will.For it is my hope that you will be mad as hell and want to tell. We will get to that later so bear with me.I have been writing about cars, driving, and traffic safety for more than 25 years. I got into this by acci-dent, no pun intended. I had been covering the often-grisly crime beat for some years when the late Vancouver Police Supt. John Lucy told me in the late 1980s that he was transferring to the traffic division. I blanched. This guy had set up the strike force and dealt with vice in the big city. “You want blood and guts, Morgan, come and talk to me in traffic,” he said dramatically.I did and he was absolutely right. The needless carnage on our roads was, and is to this day, almost unbelievable. I say almost because the more you observe human nature the less incredible motoring mayhem appears. Simple math reveals that in order to shave even five minutes off a typical commute you have to exceed the speed limit excessively and run some very late reds. That kind of driving drives me crazy and now we get

to the nub of this column. Telling you what sends me off the edge is a form of therapy that invariably evolves into group therapy. Hence, our weekly “What Drives U Crazy?” spot in Driveway, in which we encourage you to reveal what poor driving habits send you off the deep end. Your correspondent also has a less selfish wish that by identifying this appalling behaviour we could educate the sources of our collective annoyance. I know that might be considered dreaming but let’s give it the old college try.When I talk about what burns me at gatherings, people usually say “don’t get me started” then pro-ceed to regale me with their pet peeves. As that is the purpose of this exercise, let me get you started.Five things that drive me nuts, a short putt I know. 1. Those who either won’t move more than their front wheels into an intersection on a green light or remain behind the line.2. Drivers who let cars stack up behind them because they want to make a left over a solid white centre line.3. Weaver birds who race down the curb lane then cut into traffic when they near a parked car.4. Impatient folks who try to swing around you dangerously as you proceed to park at the curb. 5. People who signal a left as the light changes to green.That last example makes me want to ram the offender through the intersection. Many more manoeuvres needle me. However, I’ll get off the couch now because I think I may have got you riled enough to share your road rage.What Drives U Crazy? – Tell me. You will feel much better for having done so. I promise.

Five misleading car namesFew things in the develop-ment of a new car are more crucial than the name.

In the case of a bland or mediocre car, it’s the last chance the marketers have

to generate some buzz. That may well be why some of the most ordinary cars have wound up with some of the

fiercest and flashiest names. Here are five inappropriate-ly named cars:1. Chevrolet Sprint – The

Sprint was built by Suzuki for Chevrolet. Pow-ered by a rather anemic three-cyl-inder engine, its acceleration off the line resem-bled not so much a sprint but more of a drunken stumble. Its Suzuki-badged counterpart was known by an equally inappro-priate name, the Swift.2. Mercury Bobcat – A bobcat is a rather fierce North American wild cat. The Mercury Bobcat, on the other hand, was essentially a fancy Ford Pinto over laden with chrome trim and other options that added on additional pounds, sacrific-ing what little performance the Pinto possessed. While the feline bobcat is plentiful in the wild, the Mercury version is all but extinct.3. Hyundai Excel — The Excel was first car sold by Hyundai in the U.S., and given the top-to-bottom excellence of the current Hyundai lineup, it’s prob-ably a car they’d prefer to forget. Other than cheap-

ness, the Excel essentially excelled at nothing — unless someone handed out an award for “crudest interior” or “oddest-smell-ing plastic.”4. AMC Hornet – The hornet is one pugnacious insect, and as anyone who has ever been on the wrong side of one can attest, they definitely can sting. With the exception of the rare S/C 360 version from 1971, the AMC Hornet was a pleasant-looking and practi-cal compact sedan/wagon/hatchback without much of a sting.5. Hudson Jet — Jet planes were on the mind of nearly every car designer and ad man in

the U.S. during the 1950s. Fins, bogus jet intakes, jet exhausts and jet hood ornaments found their way onto countless cars from that decade. Curiously, the Jet wasn’t among them. There was nothing even slightly swoopy or jet-like about the Hudson Jet. The Dodge Dart has held its own in a sporty compact segment where competition is fierce.Perhaps it is because of its value, the various engine choices or that it has some pretty cool features (like available under-the-front-seat-cushion storage) and a fresh style – inside and out – the Dart seems to be a hit.Two years in, Chrysler has loaded it up with an engine full of gusto, unique styling cues and added a couple of letters on the back and now we have the Dodge Dart GT.What sets it apart from its siblings are a stretched-down grille and LED head-lights. You’ll find the rear clad with the ‘racetrack’ LED lights that run the full length of the trunk.Then there’s a set of 18-inch wheels come standard on this vehicle along with a 2.4L, MultiAir, four-cyl-inder Tigershark engine, matched with a six-speed manual transmission, that brings to the pavement 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. Of all the characteristics I like about this trim of Dart, I think its transmission is the weakest link. In previ-ous reviews of other Dart models – like the 1.4L, Tur-bocharged version with 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque – the gear throws are, in my opinion, too long to really give it that edge and sporty vibe that it needs to compete with vehicles like the VW GTI, Honda Civic Si or even the Ford Focus ST. This setup makes being stuck in traffic bearable.Getting back to the gear-box, I really wanted to like

the Dart more. I really did. So I concocted scenarios in my mind to figure out a way to not be so sad about its lack of panache. I think I found one. Buyers of the GT will like what they get for the value.After all, it has a starting MSRP of $21,995. That’s thousands less than the aforementioned compet-itors. And some buyers of vehi-cles who want that extra kick don’t necessarily need all the sports sedan-like characteristics. They want power but in a comfortable and affordable package.Furthermore, they enjoy added touches like a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, GT specific sport leather seats, a park view rear backup camera and more. The interior has a pleasant look to it and it’s very agreeable to drive. On the highway, special attention from designers and engineers were paid to make sure you drive in a quiet cabin.Minimal road noise entered the GT’s cabin, allowing my passengers and I to enjoy the musical stylings of var-ious bands being listened to on the Alpine premium stereo system with nine speakers (an additional $1,295 for this sun and sound package.) The sun

portion of the package adds a power express open/close sunroof to the mix.After I switched into this mindset, I found I was able to alleviate my frustrations of what the GT didn’t have, but what it did have.Additionally, a feature that I love about the Dart – and all other Dodge/Jeep/Chrys-ler products – is the Uco-nnect media interface. The GT comes standard with the 8.4-inch touchscreen and

Noodling on the web one morning I found out that I was selling vehicles illegally. If I was in the business of selling, I need to be licensed as a dealer.Oh well. Everything’s been working out just fi ne for me. I skated through those recent bad deals. My previous sales were a distant memory – I was eager to start selling more. So, I decided to up my game a bit. I got a low-end truck and a car from an auction and another car from a new parking lot friend. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is fl exible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice?The fi rst two cheaper vehicles sold quickly.The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask?Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the fi rst two. I had no information on the last.So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.”I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back.Four days later, I got a call from a young

woman. She asked if the car would fi t a family of four. “Defi nitely!” I practically screamed. I was a wreck during this sale. I just needed to get rid of this car – fast. I told the nice lady the details of the car. Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice!I told her I was in a hurry to visit my mum in the hospital. She was in a hurry too – her three-year-old was anxious, pulling at her pant legs. She seemed to not want to be there as much as me. Finally, she agreed to buy the car. Phew! I was saved. Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine.I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to fi nd me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.

Instead of registering a vehicle in their name within 10 days after a purchase, as required, they leave it in the name of the previous owner. This keeps their name out of the chain of title and from being caught with a stolen vehicle or one that would not be able to be registered or insured for another reason.

Rugged beauty is more than skin deepThe all-new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a luxury sport utility vehicle that attracts a lot of attention. The body styling went through some major chang-es this year and is very different to the previous version that had more chis-eled and square edges. This

vehicle is refined and more rounded. If it wasn’t for the traditional Jeep grille you would think this was a Volvo or an Audi. The first thing you notice is the new LED lighting that wraps around the HD headlamps, it gives it a sophisticated look.

Jeep did not sacrifice its off road capabilities. Options are; Quadra-Trac 1 that features full time on de-mand four-wheel drive with single speed transfer case and equal torque split (50 front/50 rear) with brake control. Quadra-Trac 11, with a two-speed transfer

case with low range and variable torque distribu-tion that delivers up to a 100 per cent front or rear. Quadra-Lift air suspension that lifts four corners of the vehicle to provide the best in class ground clearance of 272 mm that will allow you to negotiate just about any

terrain you encounter. The Summit model has a gorgeous interior, all the bells and whistles. Premium leather seats with heated/vented 12 way power front seats. The steering wheel is heated and wrapped in leather and wood. The instrument panel, doors, and centre console are also leather stitched. The power lift gate can be controlled via the remote to make life easier loading and unloading cargo. Be careful at night, with the lift gate open it’s hard to see the bottom and if you’re not careful you will be wearing the lock mechanism as a tattoo on your forehead. Don’t ask how I know. With this model, you get the navigation screen complete with a backup

camera. There is also an optional rear seat DVD system.There is an optional stabil-ity control with anti-roll, hill start assist, trailer sway control. Front air bags with reactive head rest restraints, and side curtain airbags. Forward collision warning system detects whether you are approaching another vehicle too rapidly and alerts you to take action. Parkview/ Park-sense Park assist systems that help see what perhaps you would not see when backing up. Four engine choices here. The first is a 3.0L Ecodiesel V6 that an amazing 420 lb-ft of torque and 240 horsepower. My tester was equipped with the fuel fru-gal diesel – 9.8 /7.0 L/100 km (city/highway).

I remember as a kid, wear-ing my Sunday best and then going out and playing in the mud.
