2011 CENSUS INFORMATION POPULATION PAGE 1 Victoria’s Population This information compares the City of Victoria’s population with other municipalities in the region as well as the Capital Regional District (CRD) as a whole. It also examines population growth, the distribution of population by neighbourhood, and age and gender. From the 2011 Census information, Statistics Canada provides us with valuable information to better understand our community. Objective statistical information provides a solid foundation for informed decisions by elected representatives, businesses, unions and non-profit organizations, as well as individual residents. The table below shows the city’s population growth in comparison to the other core municipalities and the CRD as a whole. It shows that: Victoria is the second largest municipality (by population) in the region, after Saanich. The city’s growth rate (2.5%) is lower than the region’s (4.3%). Growth rates have decreased in the city and in the region as whole. The table below presents the city’s population in comparison to the regional population for the past four census periods. It shows that: Victoria’s population represents 22.2% of the regional total, but occupies only 2.8% (19.68 sq km) of the regional land base. The percentage of city population to regional population has dropped slightly since 2001. Victoria’s PopulationThis information compares the City of Victoria’s population with other municipalities in the region as well as the Capital Regional District (CRD) as a whole. It also examines population growth, the distribution of population by neighbourhood, and age and gender.

From the 2011 Census information, Statistics Canada provides us with valuable information to better understand our community. Victoria’s Population by Age and GenderThe City of Victoria’s population age and gender distribution is measured every five years by the census. The following chart illustrates the age and gender distribution for Victoria in 2011. It shows that:

• The largest segment of the population is between 20 and 34;

• 18% of the population is age 65 and over;

• The median age is 41.9, which has slightly increased from 41.6 in 2006.
