VICTORIAN AGE I’ve chosen this topic because it was a period that led a progress in all fields but at the same time a controversial one. The name of the period derives from Queen Victoria , who ruled from 1837 to 1901 and became the symbol of the nation. During this period Great Britain was a very important and rich nation and London was the biggest and influential city in Europe. As i said before in the Victorian Age were positive aspects and negative ones. First of all there was an economic progress, which transformed agricultural economy in urban economy thanks to the growth of new factories, especially manifacturing industries. About progress we can say also that trades increased and this was possible thanks to the improvement of communication routes. The mid of 19 th century was also a time of great technological innovation, in particular the invention of steam-powered machinery which revolutionised industry and transport, for example in this period railways were opened for the first time. As regards the policy we can say that a working-class movement known as “Chartist movement”, although after many years, obtained some rights that were previously banned. In 1918 the vote was extended to all men over twenty-one, and later also to the girls (1928). Another positive aspect of this era was the territorially expansion. In this period in fact England colonised lots of countries like India or Australia. But technological innofation, of which i had previously discussed, brought also negative consequences within British nation. Mechanisation meant indeed competion and as a result of this the prices of finished products fell and the only solution to this problem was to cut production costs, in particular wages. Everything all brought to the spread of starvation among workers. As a result they couldn’t feed their children and to solve this problem children were separeted from their families and sent to work in workhouses, in return of food to survive. In addition in this period poverty was considered a crime and punished as such. Also education had problems, in particular teachers were incompetent and often they applied corporal punishments to students to maintain discipline.
