BACKGROUND The Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) is an important component of the student activities program within The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) that promotes mathematics across the curriculum and provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge of mathematics to a diverse range of topics. The MTQ encourages students to think deeply about mathematics and to apply it to everyday contexts. The Maths Talent Quest is organised by the Student Activities Committee at The MAV and is open to all primary and secondary school students. It is a competition which aims to promote an interest in mathematics and to foster a positive attitude amongst students, teachers and parents alike. The focus of the Maths Talent Quest is on the process of mathematical investigations. Looking at real life situations and finding that maths is everywhere helps capture the imagination of all involved. The Maths Talent Quest allows students to investigate mathematics on an individual, group or class basis with the chance to have fun, see mathematics in real life situations and receive recognition in the process. All entrants receive a certificate. Vouchers will be awarded to the Distinction and High Distinction winners for each year level at the Awards Ceremony. The entries that receive a High Distinction at the State competition are judged separately, the top entries then forwarded for Judging in the National Maths Talent Quest. National Award Winners will be presented with their prizes at a separate ceremony held following the Victorian Awards Ceremony. Now in its thirty fifth year, the MAV Maths Talent Quest has firmly established itself as a major feature of the mathematics calendar. LA TROBE UNIVERSITY AWARD The Award is presented to young women in mathematics – one junior and one senior. JIM TROTTER PERPETUAL AWARD The Jim Trotter Perpetual Award is dedicated to the memory of Jim Trotter who passed away on December 11, 1999. Jim was an active member of The Mathematical Association of Victoria’s Student Activities Committee for a number of years, and was highly committed to energising both staff and students in interesting approaches to mathematics, and in particular the Maths Talent Quest. The Award is presented annually to the best upper primary entry.
