Dear Parent/Carer,
Whether you are a student, teacher or Principal, starting in a new school is an exciting time. I have enjoyed my first 4
weeks at the College and already appreciate the strengths that have made Gleneagles the school of choice for so many
families.
Our strengths and successes were on public show this week at our ‘High Achievers’ assemblies. With motivational
speeches from our College Captains and inspirational musical interludes from our bands we celebrated the pursuit of
excellence and stamina of our high achievers.
A stand out for me was the number of parents and families who attended the assemblies. In many cases younger
siblings came in to share their brother or sister’s special moment. Having such a great turnout shows just how high our
community aspirations are and how hard we all work to achieve the very best for all our youngsters. It is only when
school and families work closely together that we all achieve our best.
LANDSCAPING
Gleneagles is located on a 25 acre site that is blessed with beautiful native plants and birdlife. Over the last 12 months
the College has undertaken significant improvements to the landscaping of the Campus.
The new spaces and plantings respect the native flora and topography and are already changing the feel of the College. The students are enjoying the spaces and it will have help to strengthen the sense of pride and confidence in the College.
This work was led by former Assistant Principal Adele Duffy and it leaves a fitting legacy to the Gleneagles community for which I am most grateful.

VICTORIAN SCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL
We are very excited to announce that the Gleneagles Senior Concert Band, under the direction of Kim Ball, received a
Gold Award at the Victorian Schools’ Music Festival on Tuesday 30 July, at the Hawthorn Town Hall. The band
performed with three other bands from around the region. At the completion of the performance, the Chief Adjudicator,
Jeff Ball, came onto the stage and congratulated the band on their great performance. He then spent some time working
with the students and giving them advice on how to further improve areas of their playing such as balance, interpretation
and musicality.
The students walked away from the experience feeling very proud of their efforts after receiving on-stage compliments
from the Chief Adjudicator, and a very encouraging written report from both Jeff Ball and Erin Ellenburg. The Head of
Instrumental Music, Zorana Horvat, and all the Instrumental Music staff, are very proud of the students’ efforts.
This is the first Gold Award for our school and reflects the dedication of the students over the last year, as well as the
hard work of the instrumental music teachers: Kim Ball, Mark Dipnall, Paul Dunn, Nicole McAlister, Steven Lebsanft and
Simon Dewar.
Congratulations to the Music Department staff and all participating students!

SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH 2019
Students in 7E and 8E have recently entered the 2019 Science Talent Search. Students entered a number of categories
including creative writing, models, computer games, scientific posters and videos. All the entries relate to the “Mission
Moon - scientific discovery and space”
Many students gave up their Saturday on 3 August to attend a judging session either in Kew, Bundoora or Windsor. We
look forward to hearing about their results at the end of term. Congratulations to all who entered and thank you to the
parents who transported their children to the venues and to the teachers from Gleneagles involved as judges.

YR 12 SOCIOLOGY EXCURSION - JEWISH MUSEUM & WALKING TOUR OF RIPPONLEA
On Wednesday 31 July, the two year 12 sociology classes went to the Jewish Museum and Ripponlea as part of their
study on community. We have been learning about what the concept of community means and Tonnies theory on
Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft.
Gemeinschaft community consists of relations between individuals based on close personal and family ties. We had the
opportunity of speaking with local shop owners and touring the museum. This opportunity was invaluable for Unit 4
AOS 1 and will help us significantly with our case studies and social research. It taught us what it means to belong to a
close-knit community and gave us a greater understanding of a community that varies from our own. We learnt about
food, culture, religion, customs and traditions. The excursion was enjoyed by all who attended.

YR 7 SOCCER
Last Wednesday 31 July, the Year 7 boys soccer team won the
Southern Metropolitan Region soccer match.
The boys showed great resilience and determination fighting back
from a goal down against McKinnon and Dandenong to win both
matches before defeating Frankston 3-0 in the final to become
Regional Champions. The boys represented Gleneagles superbly
showing great effort and sportsmanship throughout the day. Well
done boys and good luck in the state finals!

SUBJECT EXPO AND INFORMATION NIGHT A SUCCESS
Term 3 at Gleneagles is an incredibly important and busy time for our students in years 8-11 as they take ownership of their learning through the course counselling process.
On Monday 22 July our college held a Subject Expo which was designed to inform our student body about the options available to them in their Senior Pathways. Our College values regarding student responsibility were emphasised during the expo and information presentations with students firmly taking the ‘my future, my choice’ seriously.
We as a College would like to thank the Universities, Tafes and other providers who spoke to our students and informed them of alternative options as well as prerequisites required for further study.
The course counselling team were incredibly proud of the students who volunteered their time to speak to their peers and parents regarding the subjects they are passionate about along with staff who were able to assist students in understanding the wide range of options available to them.
We would also like to thank the college community for attending. The night saw over 450 students and parents attend our first Subject Expo.
We are looking forward to supporting our students in making the right choices for a brighter future here with us at Gleneagles.

YR 9 ROMEO & JULIET INCURSION
On Tuesday 30 July the Year 9 students were treated to a performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by the
Complete Works Theatre Company.
Three actors shared the roles of all characters, with the humorous Nurse a particular highlight for students. A handful of
students participated in the opening scene, donning costumes and learning lines on the spot. Students responded well
to the performance and asked the actors lots of questions at the end of the play. Overall, it was an exciting opportunity
for students at Gleneagles.

YR 7 CITIZENS OF THE WORLD INCURSION
On Wednesday of Week 2 all year 7 students experienced an important presentation run by the City of Casey. The main
message of the talk was that we are all citizens of the worlds we live in, such as our family, our community and our
school and that we have a right to feel safe and to help those around us feel safe as well.
Students were taken through the impacts of bullying behaviour, and the ways they can use positive thoughts and actions
towards others. They were also reminded of how to stay safe online and to make sure that their social media accounts
are on private settings and to be careful with how they use their phones and accounts.
Students reported that they learnt the following things:
“To always stand up for someone being bullied and help them.”
“Bystanders have a big power over bullies.”
“Bystanders can help stop bullying.”
“If you’re being bullied or see someone being bullied you should do something about it no matter what.”
We hope to see our year 7 students enact these new learnings in their day to day schooling.

CANCER SYMPOSIUM
Thursday 18 July saw six students from year 10 attend the High School Cancer Symposium at the Walter and Eliza
Murdoch Institute of Medical Research. As part of the program, the students listened to lectures by professionals within
the cancer research community. The guest speakers consisted of:-
Dr. Belinda Yeo: Breast cancer and translational research
Dr. Misty Jenkins: Killer T cells and Cancer Immunotherapy
Professor Mark Rosenthal: CAR-T cells and Brain Cancer Trials
Professor David Vaux: New leukaemia drug: Venetoclax
The students also had the opportunity of touring cancer research laboratories at the institute, attending a networking
session with Honours, PhD, post-doctorate and clinical researchers, and a workshop with cancer survivors from the
Breast Cancer Network Australia and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Lucie Turner | Year 8 Team Leader
“The High School Cancer symposium was a very valuable programme for me. It allowed me to know in depth about
cancer and how the treatments for it have changed over time. I'm glad that I was one of the 6 lucky year 10s' to attend
this programme. I liked listening to the cancer survivors’ stories and all the difficulties they went through to overcome it.
I was inspired by the speeches that were given to us. I'd like to thank Ms. Turner for giving us this opportunity.”
