Transcoding will be essential for the continued evolution of thevideo entertainment market since content is king and consumersdemand transportability of video on any device. Transcoding is theability to take existing video content and change the format, bitrate and/or resolution in order to view it on another video playbackdevice. Transcoding a single video format is available today butthat will not meet consumers’ needs to easily navigate the chang-ing video environment. The ability to seamlessly view content onany device in real-time requires the need to transcode many videoformats, thus multi-format transcoding is key.

Multi-format transcoding is the most important challenge to over-come for manufacturers and service providers to solve before real-izing the potential tremendous growth in video. Consumers have aninsatiable appetite for immersion in entertainment, and transcodingmultiple formats in real-time will be a necessary function for allfuture video products to be successful.

TI will leverage its proven expertise in supporting multi-formatadvanced video codecs to enable this key market need. A researchstudy done by IDC finds that transcoding is an essential technologyfor delivering digital content to video playback devices that werepreviously incompatible. Read more about this report: “Transcoding:

The Future of the Video Market Depends on It” and view a paneldiscussion on this topic: www.ti.com/transcoding

As the accelerating video market extends its reach to products suchas cell phones, portable media players and automotive infotainmentsystems, consumers are demanding easy access to their video contentthroughout the home and on the go. Multi-format transcoding willenable the seamless transmission of video content between all typesof video devices.

Digital television (DTV) broadcasts and receives digitally in contrast tothe analog signals used in traditional TV. DTV, which can be receivedin standard-definition or high-definition formats, uses digital modula-tion data, which is digitally compressed and requires decoding by aspecially designed television set or a standard receiver with a set-topbox. DTV’s rapid growth in popularity is spurred by the high-definitionvideo quality as well as the availability of a variety of new features/services including video on demand (VoD), gaming, security, PVR, inter-active TV, merchandising and Web browser capabilities.

High-performance streaming media technologies cover a wide range ofdigital media and emerging media-based technologies that includeintegration of video, voice and data content into many new and differentapplications, reshaping the way digital media content gets delivered.

Some of the challenges faced by streaming media include real-time performance, greater channel density and the software programming flexibility for simultaneous processing of video, voice and data streamsacross both wired and wireless networks. Typical digital mediaprocessing functions include encoding and decoding media streams, transcoding (converting from one format to another) and transrating

streams (scaling from a higher to a lower bit rate) to accommodatevarious system-level dependencies. Other processing functions includecompression, decompression, encryption, packetization and transportof media streams.

Texas Instruments has a long history of providing expertise and superi-or products to video market. TI’s comprehensive solutions cover theentire video chain – everything from the initial capture of video con-tent to the final viewing experience.

Digital Video RecorderA digital video recorder (DVR) and a video server (SVR) are appliancesused in the realm of video surveillance. The DVR/SVR takes the analogvideo signals from multiple analog surveillance cameras and digitizesthem. A processing engine encodes the video streams in digital for-mats such as H.264, Motion JPEG, MPEG-4 or using proprietarycodecs.

A DVR is designed to store and view this video stream locally. An SVRsends the encoded video to the larger security network using theTCP/IP protocol. Higher performance DVRs/SVRs also have analyticalcapabilities allowing for the automatic detection of motion, crossing ofvirtual fences, etc.

DVRs and SVRs are used to upgrade existing security systems, whichare based on analog surveillance cameras. Replacing tape-based VCRsthe DVR/SVR automates the storage of surveillance data and enablesremote access to surveillance installations via TCP/IP networks.

DVRs/SVRs typically have 4-, 8- or 16-input channels. With furtherintegration the channel count will increase to 32, 64 and beyond.

Texas Instruments has a long history of providing expertise and superiorproducts to video market. IP video nodes, video servers and video matrixes serve very similarneeds. They handle multiple camera inputs, digitize, compress andstream digital media content over an IP network such as a LAN,intranet or the Internet, turning an analog video system into a networkvideo system. Users are able to view live images using Web browsersor application software on any local or remote computer on a network.User configuration and control can also be done remotely. It allowsauthorized viewers from different locations to simultaneously accessimages from the same analog camera(s), as well as network cameras ifthey are added to the system. These devices can also store video as anoption and typically operate as standalone units.

Digital video transmission is fast becoming the standard requirementfor security and surveillance systems. TI’s DSPs provide developers the

flexibility to design a wide range of digital surveillance products. Byleveraging the DSP programmability, processing performance, video-specific peripherals and support for all major multimedia codecs, developers can design differentiated products with customized fea-tures to meet changing market needs.

Active Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance

Systems (ADAS) Overview

Active safety and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) aregrowing in popularity for automotive designs. These automotive sys-tems are using video, infrared, radar or lidar sensors coupled withpowerful processors to create a virtual model of the car’s surroundingsthat can either be presented to the driver as information to avoid colli-sions or can be used to take partial or full control of the vehicle toimprove driver comfort or mitigate the severity of a crash. Applicationsinclude adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, pedestriandetection, night vision, parking assist, drowsiness detection and blindspot detection.

All of these ADAS applications require high levels of real-time pro-cessing to remain accurate and relevant. TI has automotive-gradeDSPs and system-on-chip (SoC) devices in production, many of whichhave already been designed into ADAS applications. DSPs are wellpositioned to address a majority of ADAS applications due to high pro-cessing power at a relatively low cost, complete programmability, strong development tools and an extensive ecosystem of third partiesand complementary products.

Texas Instruments has a long history of providing expertise and superiorproducts to video market. Machine/Robotic Vision Overview

Machine Vision (MV) has been growing in popularity over time. MVrefers to both industrial and non-industrial applications where opera-tional guidance is provided to equipment for the execution of functionsbased on the capture and processing of images. Basically this isproviding “sight” or “vision” to otherwise “blind” equipment. Thisgreatly enhances the capabilities of the equipment, resulting inimproved product quality, increased productivity and decreased costs.

TI has a variety of processors, tools and software that are beneficialfor these types of applications.

Texas Instruments has a long history of providing expertise and superiorproducts to video market.
