Course Overview and ObjectivesStoryboarding is, in many respects, the most important stage of film/television production. It is where the script is transformed from words on a computer screen into a sequential, visual story. It is where concepts of cinematography, stage-setting, blocking and acting are first realized.

This workshop will explore the basic concepts of storyboarding and allow participants to create and review storyboards of their own. Concepts addressed will include: tools, methods and techniques, visual storytelling and narrative structure, shot composition, “acting,” and character development, among others.

Storyboarding Course Outline

Lesson 1: The process: storyboard stages from concept sketches and (previsualization), to thumbnails, to storyboards, to animatic, and beyond

Lesson 2: Tools of the trade: tools and methods for storyboard creation

Lesson 3: The importance of drafting and revision during the boarding process; dealing with notes

Lesson 4: Effective boarding strategies

Lesson 5: Visual storytelling: creating/controlling/conveying the narrative

Lesson 6: Blocking and composition: controlling the eye

Lesson 7: Coherence between shots, making sure boards “read”

Lesson 8: “Acting” and visual character development: bringing the script to life

Lesson 9: Conveying the mood: scene tone (comedic, dramatic, action-based, et cetera); visual idioms and tropes

Lesson 10: Storyboarding and the rest of your team: scripts and screenplays, character design, props and backgrounds, layout, animation, audio design

Lesson 11: Storyboarding for your bosses: “the network,” producers, directors, art director, et cetera
