VIDEO TUTORIAL 2 LOVE ME DO by THE BEATLES

This week’s second video tu-torial is an early Beatles tune called Love Me Do.

A few weeks ago I ran a series of columns called ‘Learn Songs Not Scales.’ That column will be compiled into a PDF eBook and will be freely available soon to all members of First Bass And Beyond so that you can cross reference it as needed.

In that series of columns I created a learning sequence of songs for be-ginners....and some of the songs in that sequence I’ve never covered - whether on YouTube or here in the Bass For Beginners course. And I wanted to fix that so that absolute beginners can start playing bass lines to real world songs almost immediately.

Love Me Do marks the transition in the learning sequence from bass lines that use ‘long notes’ to more quarter note oriented bass lines. Love Me Do has a ‘two beat’ feel - where the bass predominantly plays on Beats 1 and 3. And predominantly uses root notes and 5ths. You’ll find ‘two beat’ style in country music and in jazz too.

Here’s the intro to the tune:

Next up is the verse - I’ve used repeat bars and ‘1’ and ‘2’ lines over the top of bars to save space for the minor variation that is used in the verse format. We use ‘Verse 1’ when we go back to a verse format. And we use Verse 2 when we went to transition to the bridge:

For Verse 1 simply play the first 12 bars - and omit the bar with the ‘2’ over the top.

For Verse 2 play the first 11 bars - and replace the bar with the line and the ‘1’ over the top with the bar with the line and the ‘2’ over the top. That bar of G will transition nicely to the bridge:

And that’s essentially the song.

There are some extra bars of G after the second play through of the bridge - but you simply play the two beat pattern going from G to D. The video lesson next week will make this all clear, so watch out for that!
