PROJECT CLEAN 2015-16

An exhaustive campaign on cleanliness had begun in the month of August with the sole purpose

to encourage students to keep their surroundings clean. With stringent rules to be adhered to, the classes saw reduction in the littering. Since then the Conscious usage of the bins has been on the increase. The sense of ownership ingrained in the students had them organising themselves into groups and taking up the responsibility in rotation. The cupboards with labelled shelves and books in order have taught them that working in an organised environment is highly effective. Instructions to the helping staff with a schedule for the cleaning of the washrooms have proved fruitful in that quarter. Teachers continue to reiterate that Cleanliness is next to Godliness and it is hoped that the students would continue on this serious note in the years to come and spread the message beyond the classrooms.

Articulation is your stairway to success.

The most effective way to communicate is through speech. The four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are all inter connected. Proficiency in each skill is necessary to become a

well-rounded communicator .

You many ask, why English? Learning English offers many benefits in today’s world. It is the official

language in many countries and it is estimated that the number of people who speak English on a daily basis is nearly 2 billion! English is the most dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter a global workforce; Therefore, its importance

can never be understated. Also, many of the world’s top films, books and music are published and produced in English. So, learning English can give you access to a greater wealth of entertainment and you can have a greater cultural understanding.

Speaking right is of cardinal importance . Shakespeare once quoted in “King Lear”, “Mend your speech

a little, lest you may mar your fortunes.” Speaking well can have a dramatic impact on your professional and personal life. From the quality of your voice to your manner of saying things, your audience will glean information about various subjects, the most important of them all being your intelligence or

expertise. Clear, confident articulation usually indicates a firm and an astute grasp of the subject. . Remember, speaking is an art. The kind of language, slang and accent you use is a reflection of your personality, thoughts, mind set and opinion. It is of paramount importance to consider the audience we

are addressing and speak in a lucid manner. Speaking decent English and avoiding the usage of un-parliamentary language sheds light on one’s perspective, ethics and morals they value and oblige by. Also, aping a supposedly “correct” accent distorts your true personality and emotional range when

speaking.

In short, speaking skills are not just limited to one’s professional aspirations, it can enhance one’s personal life too, and thereby bringing about the well-rounded growth we all seek.

Rage of Fury

Nature’s fury witnessed in December,

Etched ever in our minds to remember,

The reservoirs and lakes became full,

And came out like a fierce bull.

It all happened with the rain,

Taken over by misery and pain,

The flood was very fierce,

And caused many tears.

Water also came from lakes,

And brought many poisonous snakes,

The people made the precious water got to the sea,

But now for water, they are working as busy as a bee.

My Dream Pet – Cat

I would like to have a cat,

Nice plump and fat.

With stripes on its back,

In the colour of white and black.

I think my dad would let it stay,

But I wonder what mum would say?

I wish it to be like a cute furry ball,

So I could let it stay in the hall,

Only if it didn’t dirty the floor with its hair,

Mum needn’t stare.

I would really like to have a cat,

So fluffy and fat.

I wish my mum would say a “YES”

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

Believe. It is a common word you hear all around the world in different languages. But what does it

mean? Nothing you may think. But every word has a meaning and like that believe means trust

yourself. But we never do that. Why? We believe in rumors, facts, gossips, etc. But we never believe in

ourselves. Why? Because we don’t trust ourselves anymore. We usually compare ourselves with others

and think we are inferior to them. And by doing this we lose our self-confidence and we are not able to

perform well in activities in which we are the best. Nothing is impossible in this world if we believe in

ourselves. Decades ago, man thought that travelling in space and breathing underwater was impossible.

But it’s common these days. But how did he achieve it? I can only think of one word. HE BELIEVED

IN HIMSELF! So if he could achieve so many “impossible” things just by believing, imagine how

many things we youngsters who are growing can really achieve? Is it a difficult thing to believe in

yourself? No. so, how about from now on we believe in ourselves and win every competition and

ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE? BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, MY DEAR FRIENDS.

Kaavya 7B

Childhood Recollections The memories of my childhood are one of the most precious things in my life. When I contemplate and reflect upon the past, these memories bring bliss and pleasure. During reminiscences, a sweetness of memories is created which encourages our mind to forget our boring and mundane lifestyle. When I sit alone in a dismal mood, I remember the times I played jenga, uno, lego and computer games with my brother. I also relish the moments when I played cricket, volleyball and exhilarating sports with my friends. The most relishing memories are a beautiful garden with flowers of every kind-roses, hibiscus, lilies and chrysanthemums. The echo of the insects, the chirping of the birds along with the rising sun created a perfect summer morning in our garden. The world of memories is a place that is completely different from reality. We often transcend into a memory in search of strength and courage during hardships. But our time in it is transient and unfulfilling because our work stress prevents us from having a peaceful moment. So we must use our time wisely. We must also think about our future. Past memories give us inspiration during times of uncertainty. Let us create a new memory during the present which is inspirational for our future.

"Bouquet", was the topic for the project day 2015-16. This was a confluence of various aspects of flowers. Classes KG to X participated in putting up a fine show covering different facts of flowers. Aspects such as inflorescence, petal arrangement, aestivation, pollination, fertilization, flower trade, flowers in literature and history of flowers were depicted beautifully and aesthetically by students on charts and as models. It was a wide learning experience, instilling in the child the essence of team work and practical knowledge of the topic. The models and displays presented by the students under the leadership of the Principal and the guidance of teachers was well appreciated by the faculty and the parents. Creating beautiful vistas with flowers, the children of all classes participated with great fervour. “Bouquet”, the project day was a great learning opportunity and a moment to be cherished for all and sundry!

Communication Skills

-S.Karthik 12 B

Communication is an important facet of life. Communication skills are essential in all spheres of life. Be it an interview or dealing with the project leader or working out a solution with a team or writing a report, getting across a point effectively is what matters The success of an endeavour hinges on the ability to communicate effectively in today's fast paced life, everyone is asked to do more with less. In such a scenario effective communication holds the key. Effective Communication centres round the usage of words, speed of delivery, pitch modulation and body language. Using the right tools to communicate the right messages at the right time can salvage a crises and motivate people to work towards success. Truly said, communication works but for only those who work at it. In the existing globalisation scenario, most of the information technology enabled services ,management institutes, public and private sector, multi national companies, union public service commission and state public service commission are in search for a right and suitable fresher for executive posts. Whatever be the recruiting criteria that I.T, ITES ,industry giants had in their agenda, once this was clear ,a first class degree would not serve the purpose ,the candidate has to satisfy the skill sets that the companies were looking for. And unanimously ,the skilled they were looking for were effective communication. People in organisations usually spend 75% of their daily time on communication through writing, reading, listening, inter-debating etc. Effective communication is an essential component for organisational success, whether it is the interpersonal intra group organisation or in the external level. the command over

Sanjeet was a man of twenty. He belonged to a poor family with countless debts. But Sanjeet had a sound mind and was called by an IT company for a splendid technology based work. He didn’t know anything about the outside world. He just studied whatever was taught in his government school. That was a day which was going to clear all their debts. Yes, it was the salary day. Sanjeet received his salary from his boss. He cleared all the debts but still he was not satisfied with that. He didn’t get any promotion, this made him feel frustrated and the next day he went straight to the company and shouted at his boss. He resigned the job and searched for another posting that he wished. All the companies rejected him saying he was not fit for that posting. He thought he could change whatever happened. If he had not fought with his boss this situation wouldn’t have happened. As he was thinking about this, he fell asleep . That was a deep, ’heavenly’ sleep. He found himself to be in heaven. But he didn’t die of any disorders in his sleep. He had silver wings and was glittering like a star. There he didn’t have any technology; he just wanted to live a life. He learnt to be sociable. He started helping others in heaven. There he got his promotion. He became the “God of Gods”. He had so many supernatural powers. He gave people what they wanted. He found this life to be interesting and wanted to stay there . But, he had to wake up. The alarm was booming to the core and finally he woke up. He was really bored to lead a normal life. There was a sudden spark . It told him to be more sociable

in the normal life. He learnt to be more sociable and cared for the nation. He was liked by many and

was appointed as the counsellor of his place. His boss came to ask him favours. There can be no higher

position for him. He became the “Boss of his Boss” in real life. So, it is upon us to decide the path of

our life to be successful. Sanjeet’s dream must be thanked for making his future better. Now, Sanjeet is

the only Indian representative in the United Nation’s Organisation.

BEING DIFFERENT IS GOOD

Acceptance and approval are something we all inherently seek. Be it from friends, family or society, there is nothing more satisfying than knowing that people do like you, and that you are, well, accepted in society. However, sometimes, acceptance can’t be achieved only by means that won’t necessarily make you proud. Your friends might consider you studious if you admit you like math or science a little too much. You are apprehensive about wearing a dress you own because of the disgruntled looks you’ll get from people on the street. Society is a wonderful, yet damaging thing – it is wonderful to be accepted into society but psychologically, emotionally and mentally damaging to be ostracized or rather judged in it. Sometimes the only way to fit in is by becoming the follower of the crowd. And that is a very sad thing indeed – changing your identity in order to have a better social standing. Let’s face it, do we really need to do this? There have been many instances of people being bullied, taunted and humiliated for being different. It’s not just at school level. Wars have been fought through history over differences. Conflicts have risen due to linguistic and social differences. Is this really the way to go about things? Does it really have to take terrible experiences for people to realize that you can’t see the world through a mirror? ”One man’s meat is another man’s poison.” It’s high time we realized this and started changing. For we all deserve to live our lives to the fullest , and not for anyone else .

If you pause to think, you have a cause to thank. -G SAI MANAS XI B Teacher-The word invokes a whole lot of emotions in us. Teachers have the very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children. A student may reach the greatest peak of success, but no one remembers the teacher/mentor who had guided him/her on the correct path. How much ever we reach the level of success, our teacher stays there only. One such teacher whom I admire very much and whom I consider to be my role model is Mrs.Hemalatha who was my primary social studies teacher. Our student-teacher relationship was one of the best of times. She had taught the subject for 5 years but taught more of “LIFE SKILLS”. She praised me for the good I do and punished me for the bad. After each punishment, her advice left me wiser. “A MAN MUST LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES” I always had a goal to lead a life without committing any mistake. But my teacher explained to me that a life without mistakes is like a body without a soul and slowly started explaining the ingredients to a successful life. She also taught in such a way that which everyone liked and eagerly waited for the social studies period. She also listened patiently to the students and their feedback. Her constructive criticism moulded me to follow the right path. Teachers are consistent in our lives, from school to colleges. Mrs.Hemalatha is one teacher whom I

would never forget in my life. She is the sole reason for what I am now. I am always thankful to her.

Teachers

Teachers are our second parents, They help to increase our talent, Teachers improve our knowledge, To continue our educational voyage, We thank you with all our heart, As you helped us to do our part. Avaanthikha VII – ‘A’

Dreams – A portal to a new world

Where is that land where the sea forms the sky? Where is that land where anyone can fly?

Where is that land where the seas are many fathoms deep? Where is that land you visit only when you sleep?

Yes, it is that land of infinite dreams, It is the land of cakes and creams,

It is the land which shows you the desires of your heart, It is the land of which you are an integral part!

Dreams can be of many a kind, Lots of treasure for you to find!

In your dreams, there’s no word like impossible, No matter how wild, everything is possible!

From dragons, to snakes to talking fish, In your dreams, you can eat any type of dish!

From balls, to parties, to adventures in a cave, Your dreams will give you all the excitement you

crave. From a hero to a bird as fast as the breeze,

You can be anything that you please. From the top of a mountain to the bottom of the sea,

You can be anywhere that you wish to be. Sometimes your dreams might be a vision, To tell you about your life’s main mission.

In your dreams, you might see many a thing, Oh yes, even a new piece of bling!

In short. Your dreams are very important, Because, without them, life becomes redundant.

So, enjoy your dreams to heart’s core, But, just for that, don’t start sleeping more!

EXPLORING THE EARTHIAN PROJECT

Sustainability is the efficient consumption of resources so that their availability is not affected. Biodiversity is the variety of natural organisms in our environment. We have to use our natural resources carefully so that our future isn’t affected. We the students of Vidya Mandir @ Estancia worked on a project called Earthian which was about sustainability, biodiversity and water. We worked in a group of ten students under the guidance of two teachers, Meenakshi ma’am and Uma ma’am. There were two groups and each comprised of five students and a teacher. The first group worked on sustainability and biodiversity and the second group worked on water. I was a part of the sustainability team. Both teams presented our projects as comic books. There were two parts in the biodiversity project; the first one was the practical part and the second one was the theory part. In the first part, two pots were filled with soil and dry leaves. We observed the temperature, colour and the growth of organisms in the soil. We also went around the school and identified insects, birds and small animals and took their photos. We built an aquarium and looked after the fourteen fishes we bought for 20 days. In the second part, we wrote a 2500 word essay on food! We also interviewed people whose professions were related to nature and presented the interviews as comic strips. The water team looked about the water distribution in our school, ensured if all the taps were working or not and how many people used the restroom per day (it was given in the rules book!). They also made a comic strip on water which was very interesting. They also conducted an experiment about the concentration of water from different areas of our school. Together, we all played a card game on biodiversity. Two people went out of the game but we still enjoyed it. We also took so many photos that it took us a whole book to stick to! I benefitted from my experience in the Earthian very much. I learnt to be more co-operative with my group members and how to admire the beauty of things around me……

Vacation-A Time to Relax Who doesn’t look forward to vacations, be it summer or winter? Cool ice creams in summer, warm blankets and hot chocolate in winter, these are the first things that crop up in our minds. Vacations are times when you can laze around, relax, or play with friends all through the day. Summer vacations are drawing nearer, and with it, a period of fun and frolic. However, summer vacations aren’t for sitting in front of computers or watching television, they’re about doing something enjoyable with your companions. Running, cycling, or playing with them, having sips of cool juice now and then, or eating ice creams, maybe a visit to the beach or a hill station with relatives, that’s the way I would like to spend my summer vacations. What about you? R. Sreepriya 8 ‘B’

Edition of God!!! Flakes of snow poured on the ground, were glittering through the harvest moonlight. Mo, seated uncomfortably in a car, was driving at a peak speed. Just then, he heard he heard his phone ring. His boss, James Watt, was at the other end. “Mo”,he began, “I hope your project will be ready by tomorrow? The investors will be visiting us anytime this week.” It was already late in the night. After a few minutes of chatting with him, Mo resumed his thoughts about his earlier life. Suddenly his thought-process was disturbed by a harsh engine note. That was a sound of a car engine breaking down. He was completely exasperated. Mo came down to the road to see an old gloomy building on the other side. His tension rose minute by minute and he felt an uncanny atmosphere around, as there was no one ready to lend him a hand. It was pitch-dark. He felt perplexed. After hours of waiting in the cold, Mo drew up the courage to enter the bare building on the other side. Initially, he felt well. But, soon he began to hear muffled cries…The shrieks grew louder and louder. The rattling of chains, the dreary cobwebs, and the yelling made Mo think of it as a place of paranormal creatures. These sent a chill up his spine and he had a blood-curdling experience. His chest felt tight and all he wanted was to be out of the terrified situation. He threw up his hands over his eyes and when his pupil in his eyes expanded, he stared at the most appalling sights of all… He was in a graveyard standing fear-struck. He was completely baffled. Just then, he noticed something amorphous presently taking shape. It looked pale and sombre, and to his astonishment it was moving towards him. Mo felt as if a thousand tiny spider legs scuttling down his back. It drew closer and closer to him and finally it was there, touching his head soothingly. Suddenly, for no reason, tears rolled down his pale cheeks. It began with a mild tone, “Mo, I did not expect this from you. Don’t you know that using mobile phones while driving kills? If your engine hadn’t broken down, you would have met an accident. And so I drove you in here….I hope you are able to recognize me???” Mo knew who it was. It could be none other than his own mother since he was well aware that the bond that grows between a mother and a child will never falter, no matter whether they continue to exist or not!!! - K.Pooja 10 A

Hunt For the Hidden Way! Every person in this world is different. Most of the people in this world give up things easily but there are some who try again and again and finally reach their destination. One must read stories of failures and not that of success to reach their destination. There is always a way to reach your destination and come out with flying colours. I believe that nothing in this world is impossible. Will power is one of the greatest powers. It is something which is stronger than all the forces in nature. Once there lived a girl who was extremely good at studies. Her grades were excellent. She became over confident and stopped taking her studies seriously. A few months later the weekly tests started and her grades started deteriorating. The girl was helpless and didn’t know how to tackle the problem. She didn’t know which subjects she must read in the beginning and which at the end. One fine day, she went to the examination hall to give her test and her results were amazing. The credit for this went to her mother and her hard work. When the girl was getting less marks consistently in all her tests her mother asked her about her problem. The girl told her mother that she became over confident and didn’t devote her time to her studies. Her mother suggested her to go in for extra classes to catch up with what she had missed and to work as hard as she could. The girl followed her mother’s instructions and found her lost smile again. From the girl’s story we can learn that there is always a way which solves a person’s problem. People need to think in different angles and must hunt for the way which would lead them towards success. In a nutshell, if people have a strong determination and will power they can rock the world and set an example for the others to follow. People must learn to play hide and seek to find out their hidden way! Esha Singh XI-A

My Mother My mother cares for me well, Cooks food having a lovely smell. She helps me in many a way, So that my grades don’t sway’ Beautiful and thoughtful, Making everything peaceful, Nobody is better than her, As the others come only after. She has magic hands, To finish everything fast. Her magic legs on skates Makes sure nothing goes late. No aggression, always calm, Her work always a soothing balm. I can’t ask for more of anything, Her praises I can always sing. Ashwin.S IV ‘A’

MY MOTHER My mother is the queen of all, Who likes to hear a song, You can ask her anything, She won’t answer it wrong. When I am in trouble or anything else, She always stands by me, And whenever she supports me, I always get out free. I love my mother very much, She is always bright and gay, Throughout the year I wait for May, So I can wish her ‘Happy Mother’s Day’. - Neeraj .B IV ‘B’

DETERMINATION PAVES THE WAY “I can’t believe I got so low in the Math test!” exclaimed Matthew. “I have no idea how I am going to pass the final test.” His best friend, John, was the type who would look at the glass being half full instead of being half empty. John said, “Matthew, remember, in the story of Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling, he found it hard to destroy one part of Lord Voldemort’s soul? He felt discouraged, but he found a way.” Matthew listened to this with a smile on his face. He said, “Yes, but I don’t see how there’s a path in this situation.” John looked around as if searching for a road and then exclaimed, “Oh! I just saw the path!” Matthew just looked confused. John grabbed Matthew’s shoulder and spun him around to face a corridor in his school. Matthew looked frustrated and said, “I still don’t get it!” John laughed and said, “That’s the corridor to our Math teacher’s office. She’d definitely help you by giving you extra coaching. Now you would be able to pass.” Matthew laughed as he understood John’s message. He resolved to try his best and make use of his resources. Lily and her friend Amanda were trekking through the forest. They were having a great time together and did not notice that they had strayed off the path. Suddenly, they realized that the trees had blocked the sunlight. They looked around with increasing alarm. Amanda suggested that they stop and eat something to calm down and then figure something out. Lily was so scared that she kept seeing animals sneaking up on them. The leaves around them started rustling. “I don’t see a way out of this mess! What are we going to do?” moaned Lily. Amanda just smiled. She said, “There’s always a way if you look hard enough.” She jumped up and started to climb a tree. Once she reached the top, she could see far and wide. Amanda turned her head and saw the path. She slid down and told Lily. Together, they found the trail and got back safely. Lily learnt a valuable lesson that day. No matter how difficult the situation seems, there will always be a way. Ever heard of the saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way?” It says, even if you cannot see any path, create your own! The materials for building your own path are spread around you. Open your eyes and you will see, the million different solutions to your single problem. So no matter how dark your world seems, there is always a way, you just have to look hard enough. NATURE’S FURY

Pollution on the increase With littering showing no decrease Mother Earth has displayed her anger And put our city in danger. Lots of rain fell, And our city became pell mell. With no food, no water, Everybody had to suffer. No transport was allowed on the slippery pathway, Nobody in their houses could stay. They travelled in a boat to a safer place, Their property destroyed, they had no smile on their face. Some were suffering, And some were dying, It was because of the heavy rain that came, It’s time we shoulder the blame.

Their love is so pure, So, they’re always the best! Kavinaya Sivakumar IV ‘B’

Yet another year completed fruitfully in the Primary Wing of Vidya Mandir@ Estancia. The year did buzz with activities as usual except for the eagerly awaited ‘Annual Day’ getting cancelled with the rampaging fury of nature in December. Excursions went as per schedule in the months of July and August. The destinations chosen were safe and suitable. A day out of school, children were thoroughly excited and they eagerly awaited the day of their outing with their friends. The sumptuous food provided satisfied their palate. Needless to mention, their exemplary behaviour is one we need to take pride on. With the Interdisciplinary Projects done at each grade level, the students got a panoramic view of the topic chosen. This is a multi dimensional approach that helps the students to apply the same concept in varied disciplines. The Olympiad and Asset Exams saw the students toiling hard to distinguish themselves in the competitive arena. Many, coming out with flying colours, brought laurels to the school. The ‘Chinmaya Mission’ administered ‘Bhagawad Gita’ recitation saw a whopping 130 students registering themselves for the competition. Reciting the slokas with devotion, 13 of them entered the finals after the preliminary elimination rounds. Neeraj.R of Class 4 qualified himself for the State level. The Primary Sports Day was spectacular with an impeccable Drill Display where students had the audience mesmerised with their formations of the Olympic Ring and the Blooming Flower. The wave effect created with the crescendo was the icing on the cake. The ace chess wizard, Manish Anto Christiano of class 5 continues with his victory parade garnering accolades to the school. ‘Bouquet’, the project on flowers had the students putting up a vibrant and a dazzling display of charts and models. This event also served to reiterate that we ought not to engage in practices that corrode the beauty of nature.

Once in the world of numbers,

Addition Multiplication Subtraction Division had a quarrel. Addition said “I help in adding, so I deserve to be the KING of numbers”. “No, No I deserve to be the KING of numbers” said multiplication . “How?” they asked. “Because I help in adding faster” he said. “No, I deserve because, I help the shopkeeper in giving back the correct change” said Subtraction. “No, I deserve because I help in dividing equally” said division. The quarrel lasted for long. “I deserve” . “No I” … At last they said “let us ask the judge”. So they all went there. The judge said “You all are being silly. Each of you help in one way. You all quarrel for silly things like this. So none of you deserve to be the king”. Shravya Sivakumar

The Sweet Reminiscences of My Childhood Whatever I do in my life, success or failure, I always like to go back to the past. “Climbing down the ladder” is so fascinating. I live in the past and cherish my childhood. I have an eternal longing and I do it so wistfully even today, to be left in those days when I did not know so many things and yet, I was so happy. Nostalgia is a blissful feeling though it makes us sad. Being informative does not need to mean that you are content. Escaping into another world. I look at my past self as my companion. Every now and then, I simply love to go down the memory lane to discover myself in the grounds of tall grass with a pond in the distance. Can life ever return to me those moments when I was running through trees and shrubs amidst yellow butterflies? Can I ever forget those wintry mornings when shivering with wild passion? The ecstasy was immense when I was bought some nice expensive dolls. For me, these artificial gadgets had no meaning but a touch of nature would evoke pleasant feelings in me. I would know that God is always on my side. - Anisha Rosemary Thomas XII ‘C’
