A Motivational 5 Introspection

A Soldier was finally coming home after a war.

He called his parents from Siachen. “Mom and

Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I

have a friend I’d like to bring home with me.

“Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”

“There’s something you should know,” the son

continued, “he was hurt pretty badly in the

fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an

arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I

want him to come and live with us.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help

him find somewhere to live.”

“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.

‘’Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what

you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap

would be a terrible burden on us. We have our

own lives to live, and we can’t let something like

this interfere with our lives. I think you should

just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll

find a way to live on his own.”

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The

parents heard nothing more from him. A few days

later, however, they received a call from the

Siachen police. Their son had died after falling

from a building, they were told. The police

believed it was suicide.

The grief-stricken parents flew to Siachen and

were taken to the city morgue to identify the body

of their son. They recognized him, but to their

horror they also discovered something they didn’t

know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are like many of us. We

find it easy to love those who are good-looking or

fun to have around, but we don’t like people who

inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable.

We would rather stay away from people who

aren’t as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.

Thankfully, there’s someone who won’t treat us

that way. Someone who loves us with an

unconditional love that welcomes us into the

forever family, regardless of how messed up we

are.

Educational field trip for IX and X Standard

The world is a classroom. Learning can happen everywhere. Field trips

have been a part of education for thousands of years. Imbibing valuable

learning experiences outside the classroom requires a lot of planning.

In spite of all the odds, the school management, and teachers

of class-IX and X had planned for Hampi & Badami trip for the students of

grade IX and X on 21st, 22nd and 23rd August 2016. It was a memorable trip.

Excitement was filled in the air. Hampi, the then capital of Vijayanagara

Empire spoke of its rich and cultural heritage. The beautifully sculptured

architecture was discernible in Virupaksha and Balakrishna temples which

were constructed in Nagara style. The open market system spoke of the

abundance of gold, silver and diamond. The visit to Aihole, Pattadakal

and Badami gave an opportunity for the students to witness the Nagara,

Dravidian and Vesara style of architecture. The rule of Chalukya

enriched the places at that period. Badami caves enthralled everyone.

The carvings of Vishnu, Mahavira, Buddha, Lord Shiva and Nataraj made

everyone enchanted. The visit to the Tungabhadra Dam gave the

Students a vivid description of how hydroelectricity is produced in

dams. The musical fountain show attracted the attention of every

child. This trip gave the children an immense scope of learning while

travelling.

S Murugan now 32 years of age was born, in Kerala to

a mother, who worked as a plantation laborer and a

father an alcoholic. He had no food and clothing

during his formative years. His family shifted to port

Kochi to find a new beginning. He collected discarded

and soiled vegetables to satisfy his hunger and killed

rats for shop owners to earn money. The cruelty of

life was a gross understatement compared to what

went along in Murugan’s life. But he never lost hope.

His friends became gangsters and landed themselves

in jail. He moved to an ashram at Pulluthurthy,

worked as a mason, sold newspapers. He also started

to work with children as a volunteer.

He was saddened by the pitiable states of children

and elderly living on the Streets who were holding on

to their dear life He worked hard, gradually saved

enough money to buy an auto rickshaw. He became a

social worker and wanted to bring about a change in

the life of the deprived. But saving life was not an easy

task. Once in a market area a group of people brought

a little lad to beg, pouring some liquid into the child’s

eyes, that made the child blind. Murugan sped in his

auto to rescue the child. On his way, back he was

attacked by the same gang who attempted to destroy

his auto. After judicial focus, he won violence through

love. It is with this selfless motive that Murugan

started “Theruvorum’ initially facing Hiccups, he with

the help of his wife accommodated 20 deprived souls

in Theruvorum.

Book Review

- By Mrs. Swapna Tanner

He is now actively working in 17 districts of

Kerala, till date “Theruvorum” has rescued

more than 9000 children. In his words the only

vision I have is “A society where people live for

others. This world is not my home, I am just

passing through, and I won’t take anything

with me, so why not help others rather than

asking for material things.” Awards and

recognition do not matter, what you do for

others does. I try my level best with what I

can. I am just an Auto driver who once lived

on the street.
