Sand consists mostly of quartz (90%) and small amounts of feldspar and magnetite.

Wind must blow at least 12 km per hour to move fine sand and more than 40 km per hour to move coarse sand.

Dry loose sand can take on a maximum slope of 34 degrees, known as the angle of repose.

Marram grass, or American Beach grass, is a pioneer species serving as a dune builder by trapping wind blown sand.

Anyone want to climb a dune?Anyone want to climb a dune?

Michigan has over 275,000 acres of sand dune formations which are considered the worlds largest assemblage of freshwater coastal dunes.

Only a small percentage of the earths land forms are sand dunes.

Approximately 40 percent of Michigans sand dunes are in public ownership.
