Gord Ballantyne took ownership of the Viewfinder as a reflection of his pride in the many accomplishments of the company. He was the first editor-in-chief and expanded all sections of the Viewfinder, especially the employee areas to bring together a sense of family within the company.

Gord joined Applied Electronics in 1967. Hence, I’ve had the privilege of knowing him since I was 8 years old! Even at the time he joined Applied Electronics, Gord had already had a lengthy career in the television industry, beginning in Hamilton, Ontario at CH Television in February of 1954. Throughout his years with Applied, Gord became the conscience of the company. Upon the passing of my father and company founder, Mike Stechly, Gord rose to fill the void in guiding the path of the company. Once again, his sense of family projected throughout the company.

Gord was a pillar of the organization known as SMPTE. He was a member and board participant since the 60’s and inspired my own current involvement in the organization.

The most important principles in Gord’s life were his family and his work. His work ethic can only be described as total commitment. He did find some time to pursue outside interests, his biggest passion was vintage aircraft. Gord had a long involvement with the Brampton Flying Club and participated in the construction of several WWI aircraft replicas. He was also a long time member of the Harvard association and helped restore many of the Canadian built WWII training aircraft. Those examples grace the CNE airshow every year.

Next to his wife, Edie and his children, Rob, Steve and June, Gord once said that the best thing that ever happened to him in his career was joining Applied Electronics, we beg to differ – it was the best thing that ever happened to Applied Electronics.

Applied Electronics’ relationship with Shaw Media has brought forth many exciting projects and challenges for Applied Electronics’ team, including the new studio for Global’s The Morning Show, located at 121 Bloor Street E. in Toronto, Ontario. The show launched last fall with the street side studio’s ceiling-to-floor glass windows facing the busy downtown street front so passerbys could see the studio’s visually stunning Christie MicroTiles, Sharp LCD monitors and screens and advanced broadcasting technologies. After the Audio Visual Systems Division of Applied Electronics successfully installed the studio backdrop with vibrant LCD panels and monitors, Applied Electronics’ Broadcast Systems Division provided two robotically controlled HDL 45A Ikegami cameras mounted on Telemetrics Televators. Additionally, HDK 79EX III cameras completed the complement, one used on a Steadicam and the second on a Jimmy Jib. Canon HJ 17ex7.6 IASE lenses were chosen for all four cameras because of their high optical performance and ease of operation. Shaw and Applied Electronics were faced with the task of routing and controlling the cameras located in The Morning Show’s downtown Toronto studio from Global’s Don Mills master control room in North York. Even with the challenges of the master control room running miles away from the studio, Applied Electronics’ project team was able configure everything so that the show can run smoothly every weekday morning. For more information about this project, please contact Eugene McEleney at our Toronto office.AEL team: Eugene McEleney, Peter Gillespie, Donnie Gallant, Keith Treble

TEKTRONIX SEMINARS 2012After four years of successful Video Insight Seminars, Tektronix and Applied Electronics once again hosted its annual complimentary seminars throughout the spring and summer of 2012. Seminars were held in Toronto, Montréal, Québec City, Edmonton and Vancouver in May and June. The workshops provided tips and tricks on tackling today’s video challenges while demonstrating new techniques for post-production and broadcast solutions.

Each seminar was a huge success and received an excellent turnout. They focused on helping attendees understand:

The Robbins Learning Centre is a high-tech medical training facility where health care professionals from across the province share knowledge, innovations and techniques that can be used to continually improve patient care.

Contracted by Alberta Health Services, Applied Electronics supplied and integrated the Robbins Learning Centre with state-of-the-art presentation technologies. Located in the Robbins Pavilion at Royal Alexandra Hospital, the Robbins Learning Centre contains a 181-seat auditorium and three classrooms equipped with high-definition audio-visual technology that provides a digital link to classrooms, operating suites and other learning facilities from across North America, creating opportunities for collaborative-based teaching and training. To bring the latest in presentation technology to life, Alberta Health Services worked closely with Applied Electronics to design and implement a state-of-theatre immersive medical teaching environment into the Robbins Learning Pavilion. The centerpiece of this advanced system is the Robbins Learning Centre Theatre, a 181-seat auditorium that presents viewers with an unprecedented training opportunity. The theatre has the capability to remotely connect to facilities around Alberta for a completely unified collaboration experience, allowing medical staff to experience telepresence on a provincial scale. In addition, three interactive classrooms are located in this exciting facility as

additional training and telepresence environments. Each classroom possesses the ability to show high definition presentations in a variety of room sizes and configurations, with the potential for distance learning and collaboration. To take full advantage of the training potential of this facility, the system has also been designed to accept video and audio feeds from Stryker surgical suites located within the Royal Alexandra Hospital and beyond in additional Alberta Health Facilities. This capability will allow viewers to virtually attend a live surgical procedure and communicate with the surgeon from the comfort of the classroom or theatre via real time interaction with medical staff. To welcome visitors to the Robbins Learning Pavilion, an interactive touch screen kiosk allows visitors browse through dynamic content at their leisure while viewing information on subjects such as donors, facility capabilities and current event schedules. Accompanying this interactive display is a dual display digital signage system to show additional information that can be updated remotely to target specific visitors on any given occasion. While each of these rooms is independent of one another in both operation and location, all of the supporting technology is positioned in a centrally located space with communication and distribution via high bandwidth, low latency fibre optics. This advanced design approach allows each individual system to operate independently from one another with up to five presentations or conferences occurring simultaneously. All systems can also be seamlessly combined into one large virtual meeting space.Applied Electronics very proud to be part of the development of this ground breaking facility. For more information on this project and list of equipment incorporated into these systems, please visit our website or contact Kevin Reiser in our Edmonton office.AEL Team: Kevin Reiser, Morris Fenerty, Cliff Cockrall, Caleb Huget, and Devyn Brick.

CANADIAN TIRE DECKED WITH DIGITAL SIGNAGEWith their Corporate Home Office located in the bustling Yonge-Eglinton area of midtown-Toronto, Canadian Tire approached Applied Electronics with the goal to update their facility with new presentation technology.Canadian Tire wanted their reception lobby to be a showcase of its long standing history by proudly displaying samples of their old advertisements, merchandise, company videos, etc. On the main wall adjacent to the entrance of the lobby is a large 80-inch Sharp LCD display monitor which runs archival footage, with the possibility of accommodating future expansion with digital signage software system. Accompanying the 80-inch display monitor in this area are two 42-inch Sharp LCD monitors intended to exhibit historic Canadian Tire advertisements and videos about the company’s history. Located above the reception desk are three narrow bezel 40-inch LCD monitors to display daily messages and additional archival media as required. All the display monitors are fed content from pro-grade DVD players.Serving as a dual-purpose space, their Cafeteria / Town Hall is equipped with a full audio system for voice reinforcement and background music. It also boasts a motorized Da-Lite HD format Cinema Contour projection screen and a Christie Digital LW555 5,000 ANSI lumen widescreen LCD projector for presentation purposes. Two 32-inch Sharp LCD monitors are also incorporated to display daily news programs and to enhance the presentation system during high capacity assemblies. Both the Lobby and Lunch Room/Town Hall systems are fully automated with Crestron CP2E compact control systems with ethernet. All the displays and the projection system are linked back to a Central Rack Room via an Extron MLS608 hybrid switcher and Extron MTP Series Twisted Pair solution which minimizes signal loss and the overall cabling requirements and cost. For more information about this project, please contact Bill Archibald in our Toronto office.AEL Team: Bill Archibald, Brian Power, Campbell Brown, and Jody Fitzpatrick.

Applied Electronics will once again be packing up and moving to a larger space this year. Our Montréal office will be relocating to 5200 Rue Saint Patrick, Montréal, Quebec to provide better services and convenience for our clients.

The new 8,800 sq.ft. facility is bigger than the previous building and is closer to the downtown core where most of our Montréal clients are located. This new building offers ample space for warehousing, office operations, truck access and sufficient parking near the downtown area.

Quebec and Eastern Canada Manager, Mario Cusson, is currently working on integrating technologies such as Christie MicroTiles, video and web conferencing, LCD screens and projection systems in boardroom and meeting spaces throughout the office.

The official grand opening of our new Montréal office is anticipated for early 2013, but will be fully operating by the end of October 2012. Our Montréal staff look forward to having our clients, industry partners, clients and fellow employees from other branch offices visit the new facility.
