SURPRISE – HONOUR – LUMPY THROAT!

A

Great

Moment for Yours Truly

aving done my bit in the order of the day – how satisfying it is to present BIAE Diplomas to new members, they have

worked hard and aimed for the best – then ……… up stands the Chairman, all smiles, a „hold on a minute‟ look on her face and with not so much as a nod or a wink, by your leave, would you like - I‟m joking of course – says lots of nice things about me AND makes me a Fellow of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis! Everything went a bit blurred. A very happy moment. On arrival home, two inches taller, showing the family my framed certificate and beautiful crystal vase, my 9 year old grandson looking slightly puzzled got out the dictionary, apparently looking for the definition of Fellow!! A memorable day it was at the excellent new venue the UJC – certainly a flag day for me.

would like to add a word or two to the Chairman‟s AGM report. Mandy gave a well detailed account of her Board‟s activities but of course nothing about

herself. Instead of the usual train journey to meetings, Mandy and her husband drove up from Suffolk bringing her treatment couch and equipment to the UJC in order to give the excellent presentation and demonstration by Helen of Advanced Electrolysis. There was a queue waiting for removal of bits and pieces. Hopefully Nicky will hear from those that Helen treated giving their report on the experience and measure of success. USING THE BIAE PRESS PACK

just wanted to follow up my conversation with Jill Ferguson and those members present at the AGM regarding gaining new clients and

publicity from the BIAE Press pack. In September last year, when placing an advert, I negotiated a free editorial with a local marketing company I use periodically, they were very interested in the fact that I had a press release from my professional body. The editorial was published on one side of the magazine with my advert and BIAE logo on the opposite page, this generated me new clients in an area I had previously never had clients from. Those clients have made excellent progress with electrolysis and subsequently recommended me to their friends. Therefore my thanks to Tigerfish and the BIAE for organising this press pack. Based on this success I have now negotiated with another marketing company a half page

free editorial using the press pack mature article to promote both the BIAE and my business and hope to once again generate new clients and further income for my business. I would urge any of you who are wanting to generate more income or who have felt the pinch with the recession to try using the press pack and taking out a small advert to go along side it, I think you will be impressed by the response. The general public are looking for therapists /operators who can deliver good quality electrolysis treatments so flaunt your BIAE logo and qualifications and let people know that they will be in safe hands with you. BUSINESS BOOSTERS FOR BIAE MEMBERS IN 2011

emember the census form you filled in last year? They all had lots of fantastic comments and suggestions from

members on what the board can do to help you more. So here's a quick rundown of what to expect in the coming months. 1. More prominent promotion of advanced electrolysis as performed by BIAE members (meaning, we're not going to promote just advanced treatments, we're going to make sure people understand they should look for a BIAE member). This will include short video clips on the BIAE website, taken from the fabulous demonstration at the AGM, and a directory of BIAE members providing advanced treatments. IMPORTANT You need to TELL US if you provide advanced treatments otherwise you won't be on the list. Please check the website www.electrolysis.co.uk and see if you're listed. If not then email or call and we'll add you on. 2. Simple and very affordable websites created and maintained by the BIAE for you. Even if you don't like computers and never use the internet, you'll be able to have one because all you need

to do is tell us what to put on it. Think of the internet as a massive noticeboard that can be seen by the whole of the UK. Your website is a brochure pinned to the noticeboard. More details in the summer of 2011. Don't pretend you don't need one! 3. Details on our very own training course for electrolysis, offering more choice to students and employers wishing to train up their staff. Sadly Habia will probably not support us but this actually gives us the freedom to set a higher standard than nationally accredited courses. If you are considering teaching electrolysis then please contact the office and let us know so that we can contact you as soon as we have more details. Hopefully we can attract more men to the profession too. 4. More help when choosing a new epilator. A proper buyers guide will be created so you can compare and decide with more confidence. FRANCES GODFREY

Kay Treby and Frances Godfrey

am very sad to announce that Frances Godfrey passed away very peacefully aged 103 on the 7th April 2011 following a massive stroke.

She was a totally wonderful lady who was the greatest teacher and mentor to me - and to many, many others over several decades. A Founder member of The Institute of Electrolysis she was involved in the very early days of establishing standards of training, examination and practice for our profession. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her but her example and the memories of her will remain with us all. The funeral for Frances took place on the 19th April in Worthing where she lived. I am so glad that I visited only a few weeks ago and had an uplifting afternoon with her - she was in such good spirit and that is how I shall remember her always. Kay Treby

The following recently appeared on the Mail Online Website – the BIAE response follows

Beauty Bible Beauty Clinic

Q - Can you please advise me about getting rid of unwanted facial hair. I am prone to rosacea so have to be very careful what I use on my face . I was considering buying a laser unit for home use ̶ do you think that would be a good idea? I have had electrolysis over the years, but it has left marks on my upper lip.

A - Electrolysis is the only more or less permanent method of facial hair removal, and there are some very good results. But as you have experienced, it carries the risk of scarring, according to consultant dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe of the Cranley Clinic, London (drnicklowe.com). He says: ‘I have seen many people with scarring from professional electrolysis, and it’s particularly common on the upper lip because it’s difficult to get the current just right. If the hair follicle is repeatedly overheated, you get tiny depressed pinhead scars.’ However, Janet Ellard-Smith of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis (electrolysis.co.uk) refutes this, saying: ‘If a client has treatment by a recognised professional, such as a BIAE member, scarring will not happen.’

BIAE RESPONSE

BIAE member quoted in the Daily Mail 27th April 2011

BIAE member Janet Ellard-Smith was asked to respond to comments from Dr Nick Lowe claiming electrolysis is difficult to get right on the upper lip, and that scarring is a common result. “Janet Ellard-Smith of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis (electrolysis.co.uk) refutes this, saying: „If a client has treatment by a recognised professional, such as a BIAE member, scarring will not happen.‟ ” While the BIAE does not in any way dispute Dr Lowe must have seen several clients with scarring as a result of bad electrolysis (as our members have too), anecdotal experience should not be used as evidence to judge an entire profession. As stated in the article electrolysis when performed correctly will not leave scarring. If a female client has received correct treatment and has no hair left to remove, she will simply get on with her life. However if she has received incorrect treatment resulting in scarring then she will seek out help from clinics such as Dr Lowe‟s, hence only bad cases are seen which leads to a skewed view of the treatment. Dr Lowe‟s experience shows that bad electrolysis treatment will probably lead to scarring, which is something we agree with. That is why we personally check the skills of each BIAE member before they are allowed to join.

GETTING TO THE POINT

The 1st in a series of Member Interviews

Nona Girling F.B.I.A.E

Q -You live in Suffolk now but where did you grow up?

Born and grew up in Suffolk Q You have been in the Beauty Industry for a long time. Q Did you have any other career prior to becoming an Electrolysist? Q When and where did you do your Beauty training? – Q What was your first job when you qualified?

2

nd World War probably changed my future

completely. My great aim was the Royal Ballet School. Alas the war prevented this SO for 7 years I did secretarial work. I think now how boring but of course many aspects of business have been useful to me as also was my 2 years at Art School. When my second child was 6 years old I realised a need to create something more than cooking, decorating and gardening, much as I still love doing all of those. I enquired at the then Ipswich civic College about a beauty course. There was only hairdressing but the Head of Department said “go and get yourself trained and come back to see us”. So with 2 children to care for and very little money I did a short course – a little beauty, a little electrolysis with Gertrude Hartley in Dover Street, London. I soon realised the practical side was excellent but I needed to know more about anatomy and physiology to make sense of it all SO did one year at Civic College two evenings a week to do an A Level in Anatomy and Physiology. Out of the blue I got a phone call from the Head of Dept at Civic College, who I had seen a year before, to ask what I was up to. I filled her in and she said “come down the college and let’s have a chat”. On leaving she said “go to Boots, order all you need to start teaching beauty therapy to full-time and day release hairdressing students, course to commence this September”. In at the deep end. I did it part time for 28 years, but at the same time I realised I wanted to do

electrolysis more than anything else so to add to my previous short training I decided to do the one year one day a week course at Tottenham Technical College. Only 5 colleges in the country offered this course. I loved it and decided this was for me, I would specialise. I learnt to drive and operated a mobile practice in Suffolk. The demand was huge. There was never enough time in a week SO I looked for a bigger house to work from. Here I am still, 45 years later with a waiting room and a treatment room on the fourth floor.

Q You became a lecturer, which college? How long did you train girls?

Ipswich College – now renamed as the Suffolk College. 22 years, always as a part time lecturer.

Q What changes have you seen in the Industry – good and bad?

Sadly there seems little thought given to selection of the right candidates for enrolment. Electrolysis and beauty therapy do not mix. Students finish the course having had very little experience in dealing with extensive hair growth removal and the whys and wherefores of superfluous hair growth. Insufficient knowledge.

Q What advice would you give young people wanting to specialise in Electrolysis?

They have to want to enough. I pray they get well taught.

Q Thank you for sharing some of your life with us, do you think you will ever retire?

I entered the profession when the climate was right. I was lucky. I doubt it is the same now. My one regret – I never did perfect that left hand pirouette on point. Retire – not as long as I keep fit and can climb the stairs.

IT WASN’T JUST BRUISING…....

t the end of March I had a client come into the salon for a manicure. She is a wedding dress designer and

was finding that she was catching her finger tips on the fabric because of dry cuticles and rough nails. I began the manicure joking with her that brides wouldn‟t appreciate their wedding dresses having pulled threads. While lifting her cuticles on one of her thumbs I notice the client wince slightly. Asking if I was pressing too hard she replied she had noticed for several months that this thumb was tender. On looking at the thumb nail more closely I noticed that there was a slight blueing under the nail. It radiated up from the matrix to midway up the nail plate with a fine “tail” ending at the free edge. The client thought she may have stabbed a needle down the nail at some time and it was still healing. I had other suspicions…… I advised the client to see her GP as bruising wouldn‟t last as long as she was experiencing and there may be underlying infection present. The next day this client popped into see me to say that the GP agreed with me! He said that this needed checking and referred her to the

hospital as the nail may have to be removed to inspect the area properly. Two weeks later she had her appointment with the hospital consultant and was shocked when he said that she would need to have the nail resected under anaesthetic and that he suspected it was more serious than infection. The client popped in to see me again after her operation to thank me. The surgeon had removed a Subungual Tumour which was sent for biopsy. She had the centre of the nail from free edge to 1cm below the matrix removed and tissue surrounding the tumour down to the knuckle removed. If it hadn‟t been for my urging her to visit the GP she would have left it and I may have saved her thumb! Although we learn of nail disorders during our initial training it is without a doubt the knowledge I have gained through doing post graduate Advanced Electrolysis training that enabled me to recognise a possible malignancy. My client will come along to tell me the outcome of the biopsy and show me the healed thumb very soon, hopefully all will be well. Mandy Painting

CAN YOU HEAR ME?

hilst in the ENT Department at the local hospital this week, I learnt the following – Cochlear implants are being made available through the NHS to adults. This is surprising news considering the huge expense, time and surgical expertise involved.

Understandably only people absolutely right for this operation are considered. Age, general health, severity of deafness are key factors. Nonetheless electrolysists must be vigilant during consultation, To Recap – Remember – particularly teachers within the profession - clients with in the ear hearing aids must be asked to either switch them off or remove them. Those with implants must not be treated above the neck. To conform to these rulings is your responsibility. Clients may be quite unaware of the contra indications. On no account accept her saying she will take the risk – I need not explain why!! Nona Girling
