29Who should I contact if I have a problem?

CONTENTSchange as Rushden was recognised for its potential in boot and shoe manufacture. Rapid expansion followed and the town’s population increased from 2,500 in 1876 to 15,000 by 1916. Today, Rushden is a vibrant town of over 30,000 residents making it the fifth largest town in Northamptonshire.

Burgeoning boot and shoe manufacture in the early 1900s brought wealth and prosperity. At its height Rushden was described as one of the most remarkable towns in Northamptonshire because of its manufacturing capacity.

A strong sense of community grew up around the factories. Factory owners not only provided housing for their workers, they also catered for their spiritual wellbeing with churches, chapels and meeting places. The factory owners, happy to display their wealth, endowed the town with many fine examples of late Victorian and Edwardian architecture.

Reliance on boot and shoe manufacture had largely died out by the 1960s and now only four high-quality shoemakers remain.

Today, Rushden is again looking to the future by beginning an exciting new chapter in its development. Rushden Lakes (open 2017) provides an opportunity to shop, eat and relax within

a world-class setting of outstanding natural beauty.

The existing High Street meets everyday needs via a mix of independent shops and well-known national outlets, within a unique heritage setting. It is at the heart of a number of community events.

Footpaths/cycle tracks (the Greenway) offers a safe route between the town, Rushden Lakes, and beyond.

The many parks and green spaces provide areas for leisure activity or a quiet place to relax. The superb Rushden Hall sits within 34 acres of beautiful parkland and overlooks the town’s major annual event, Party in the Park, attracting thousands of visitors to Hall Park each year.

Further expansion is anticipated with the development of Rushden East. The extension will bring houses, employment and infrastructure, enabling more people to live and work in the area.

I hope this has given you a sense of Rushden as a town steeped in strong community ideals that is looking to the future wellbeing of its residents.

I hope you find it interesting and informative.

Please enjoy Rushden and all it has to offer.

picturesque St Mary’s Church and brings together a selection of specialist independent arts and crafts and allows an opportunity to linger over a freshly baked cake and a cup of tea or coffee.

The appeal of Rushden High Street is enhanced by some attractive examples of late Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The banks in particular, Natwest, HSBC and Lloyds are all flamboyant examples of the affluence of the time. Decorated in stone with strapwork, floral details, urns and gargoyles they are more in keeping with a city branch than that of a small town. The number and opulence of these relics of a former era endow the town with its unique qualities.

Whilst the High Street and surrounding streets are the main hub of shopping activity, other areas such as Church Street, Wellingborough Road and Newton Road offer further goods and services including coffee shops, antique shops, bicycle shops, kitchen designers, beauticians, hairdressers, pet groomers and much more.

To discover the full range of businesses in Rushden please visit the Rushden Town Partnership website www.rushdentown.org.uk

Rushden Lakes to the west of the town centre (adjacent to the A45) provides a whole new

shopping experience by mixing retail, restaurants, and leisure within a unique 220-acre setting of outstanding natural beauty.

RUSHDEN CARNEGIE LIBRARY

Newton Road NN10 0PT0300 126 1000Opening hours: 9am-6pm

Opened in 1905, Rushden’s library was provided through the benevolence of Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-born philanthropist, and by shoe manufacturer, John Claridge, who wrote to Andrew Carnegie in 1902 requesting financial assistance to build a library for the people of Rushden.

Major refurbishment took place in 1995. In partnership with East Northamptonshire Council, a magnificent atrium was built providing the building with disabled access for the first time and allowing the library to expand considerably. This allowed the best features of the old library to be retained. Rushden’s is one of the few Carnegie library buildings in the country retaining its use as a library.
