Fred Holhubner then described the Youth of the Month Program and introduced Marc Solodky a UHS Guidance Counselor who works with the club to help identify each of the six monthly winners of the award. Marc then described the process used for identifying winners. Students applying for the award fill out an application form provided by the National Exchange Club that solicits information about the student’s scholarship, leadership, school activities and service activities. A committee of faculty members, deans, and other administrators meet monthly to review the applications and select the winner for each of the six months. Six Youth of the Month Award winners with Fred Holhubner

Each of the monthly winners was then invited to compete for the Exchange Club of Urbana’s Youth of the Year award and the potential to also advance to the District and National competition.

The most daunting requirement of the Youth of the Year submittal is to submit an essay on a topic provided by the National Exchange Club. The Youth Committee of the Urbana Club selects the winner based

All six of this year’s winners competed for the Youth of the Year award. The committee had a difficult decision, but chose Sophia Diers to receive the award. She read her essay on the topic “Responsible Citizenship for a Stronger America”. She was the awarded a Plaque and a check for $200.

Program: Fred Holhubner, Chair of the Youth Committee outlined the program for the Youth Awards. He then introduced Michael Branden and Felicia Tufano, Faculty Advisors to the National Honor Society. Mike discussed the process by which students are selected to the Honor Society. While grades are important, service to the community and to support the chapter are also very important. Members are involved in support of local

agencies and travel to other locals to participate in service projects. Thousands of hours of service are recorded each year.

Each of the senior members of the National Honors Society in attendance was then recognized and presented with a certificate by Felicia and congratulated by officers of the Exchange Club.
