Facing Our FearsWhat will you be doing with your family for vacation this summer? Sharon and I have plans to spend a week camping. Plans are still up in the air as to where we are going. Wherever we end up I am sure we will have a great time. A couple weeks ago I suggested to my adult children that, as a family, we should all go to either Hershey Park or Dorney Park for a day this summer. Both parks are very kid friendly, offering rides for small children and thrill seekers as well.When I was a child living in Virginia, our family would visit relatives in Pennsylvania almost every summer, and a trip to Hershey Park was always on our agenda. As a child I thought Hershey was a great place. I still remember the gravel walkways and the white wooden roller coaster.As an adult, I must admit I am not a big amusement park ride fan. In fact when it comes to amusement park rides, I am the biggest coward God ever created. When visiting places like Dorney with youth groups I am amazed at the courage of our teenagers. At Dorney, there are at least four roller coasters that travel at amazing speeds and heights, twisting and turning and throwing the rider from here to there. There is one ride where you are strapped

in a contraption that shoots you straight up in the air for about 150 feet. I am not much good when I get five feet off the ground. I am always terrified just watching this thing, but whenever I visit Dorney there are always people waiting in line to ride that contraption.

The ability to face one’s fears head on is an admirable trait. I am always reminded of that fact whenever I go to an amusement park and find myself sitting on a bench in the shade, watching others enjoy the ride of a lifetime. I am also reminded that the ability to face one’s fears goes beyond amusement park rides. It is applicable to life itself. Life itself can be a roller coaster at times. What gives us the courage for the journey is faith in our Lord, who is with us at every twist and turn of life’s path. Our task is simply to trust in the Lord and to hold on for what is truly the ride of a lifetime!

WOW! Poor Oksana sure did have a scare last week. She overheard a conversation and caught words like summer, tanning, and children. These words sent panic through our ostrich friend because back home she knows that ostrich hides (especially young ones) are often tanned and used to create ostrich leather products. Thinking that someone might be looking to turn her into a pair of shoes, Oksana was planning a hasty retreat to the savanna. Upon hearing the explanation of how the word “tanning” was being used she relaxed and realized no one was scheduling her demise. With further clarification she understood that the original conversation was probably mothers discussing the value of protecting their children from too much sun and tanning during the summer.

This scene reminded Oksana and the food pantry crew that our supply of products for babies and young children has been depleted. So, during the month of July, we would like to fill the grocery cart with any item that can be used by our youngest individuals. We can use jars of baby food, baby cereal, baby snacks, diapers, baby wash, shampoo and especially baby wipes. We do know that some of our eldest clients at food pantry are also in need of items such as baby food and wipes. When you are grocery shopping, add a few baby choices for the grocery cart in the narthex. All contributions will be taken to the food pantry for distribution on August 2nd.

Oh, yes, Oksana reminds all her St. Paul’s family members to use the appropriate SPF when enjoy the summer sunshine!

Senior Spotlight This Month

This month we are spotlighting Marie Boyer of 301 W. Vine St., Fleetwood. She recently celebrated her 87th birthday on May 12th. Marie was born in Wanamakers, PA near Kempton. At the age of four, her family moved to a 240 acre dairy farm in Windsor Township between Lenhartsville and Hamburg. She continued living at home until after her marriage in 1945.

Marie grew up in a large family with five brothers and two sisters. Four siblings are now deceased and her brother, Bob Lenhart, sister, Grace Shollenberger, and brother, Jim Lenhart all live in Berks County.

Growing up on a large farm required hard work, and Marie was a "tomboy" who toiled out in the fields just like the boys. Her brother Bob often tells her, "You did a man's work!" However, there was always time remaining for the siblings to make up their own games and have fun. In the winter when roads were treacherous, she recalls her father using the sled to transport milk to the creamery.

Until 8th grade, Marie attended a one-room country school called The Sunday School near Hamburg. She graduated from Hamburg High School in 1942. Getting to school required walking long distances of one to three miles.

During high school, Marie's favorite past time was participating in a roller skating club called the Fleetwood Stumbling Bums. She enjoyed spending free time at Trexler's Rolling Rink near Hamburg skating with her friends. Sometimes the club would rent a bus to travel as far away as New Jersey.

In fact, Marie's interest in roller skating provided the opportunity to meet her future

husband. Her best friend introduced her to Raymond who was known as “Red Boyer" because of his red hair. Everyone in Fleetwood called him by his nickname, and it took a year before her father actually asked, "What is his real name?" She was the first one in her family to have a church wedding in July of 1945.

Marie and Raymond have three children. Richard lives near Breinigsville, Diane in North Carolina, and Dennis lives locally. They also have been blessed with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

After getting married, Marie’s full-time job was taking care of her family and raising her children. In 1956 she took a job working in the cafeteria at the old Fleetwood Middle/High School. Next she worked for the Penn Dutch Cookie factory first half time then full time, retiring in 1984.

Since Marie's husband was a member of the Lions Club, they had many opportunities to travel to the national conventions in Hawaii, Texas, and western Pennsylvania. They also enjoyed traveling on many car trips as well. In July 1995, a particularly memorable 50th anniversary celebration trip was taken out west with their son. Sadly, her husband passed away in September of that year. Since that time, she has continued her love of travel and has taken trips to Germany, Switzerland, and Alaska. Every winter Marie spends three months in Florida. Marie continues to stay active by participating in Blandon Senior Citizen's bus trips. Once a month she enjoys going to a dinner theater and is looking forward to a trip to Minnesota in September.

When she was younger, she enjoyed sewing and making all her own clothes. Family ties are very strong and there are always gatherings of the Lenhart clan on July 4th, Christmas, and other occasions.

Marie has been a member of St. Paul's since 1946. Since her parents lived next door to Rev. Kehm, she felt a special bond to his ministry. She has been active in the life of the church as a deacon, and assisted with potpie suppers, bazaars, rummage sales, and baskets for Women in Crisis. She was acquainted with Pastor Pat before he came to St. Paul's since her daughter and husband were members of St. Paul's UCC in Amityville. Attending church regularly, she continues to strengthen her strong beliefs. What a cheerful smile and exuberant energy Marie brings to our St. Paul's family!

Summer Camp is SizzlingCome one Come all to Summer Camp!!!!!!!! It is still going on for the month of July, Monday through Thursday for 3-6 year olds from 9-12n. The cost is $50.00 a week. We have all kinds of fun and themes planned such as Dinosaurs, Cowgirl/Cowboy, Disney, Zoo, and Beach. Applications are available on the information brochure board in the narthex, on the website or at the school office.

We are filling up very quickly for next year. If you or some one you know is interesting in preschool, playgroup, extended care or kindergarten, please give them our name and number. We have programs from 20 month old to 6 years old. We have one to five day programs as well. Don’t loose out, grab a spot. Call the school office at 610-944-5808 for information. Half Day/ Full Day Kindergarten/Advanced Prek- Our Kindergarten/Advanced Prek program will run Monday through Friday. It will provide a positive school experience for your child. Our unique curriculum prepares your child for the primary grades in a personalized private and nurturing environment. Extended Care – Before and after school is provided for families of students of St. Paul’s UCC Church and School. If you are having difficulty matching school hours and work hours, this is finally your answer. It will be supervised and maintained by the school and provide loving care for your child when you are not available. Please give us a call.

I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, visits, flowers, hugs and kind words during my recent illness. St. Paul's is just filled with loving friends who are there when you need them. Special thanks to Lynda Shenk for all those doctor visit trips and food. It is a comfort to know we can count on each other through whatever life brings.

A kind deed is like water for a flower; it makes the heart bloom. Thanks to everyone for planting a garden in my heart.

Mission News

Helping HandsIf you or a family member needs some

"Helping Hands", please contact Joanne Knoll at 610-944-8513 who will be the coordinator for July. After a busy month of April, Helping Hands activity has slowed down: 20 calls and 4 transports.We now feel that the Helping Hands program has become well established and recognized by church members as a valuable source for help in certain situations. Our volunteers continue to “answer the call” when needed and we cannot thank them enough.

Fleetwood Food Pantry On Thursday, June 7th, 98 families were served at the Fleetwood Food Pantry. Thanks to all of our members who donated snack food items for Oksana Ostrich's shopping cart; each family was able to select a snack. The next food pantry will be on Thursday, July 5th from 3:30-6:00. It is St. Paul's "official" turn at the pantry. We will need lots of volunteers, especially since this date is right after a holiday. Also many of our youth and adults who regularly help will be on the youth mission trip in Maine, we will need both adults and youth to help to bag orders and carry them to the client's cars. Hope to see lots of folks that afternoon. Remember that plastic bags are needed to pack orders and can be dropped off in our church kitchen.

Clean Up Buckets In response to Church World Service's recent appeal for clean up bucket, the mission committee voted at their meeting in June to use money from their funds to buy the needed supplies and shipping costs for 10 clean up buckets. After the supplies are purchased, time to assemble the buckets will be announced in the weekly bulletins. We will need many hands to help with this worthwhile project.

Parish Visitors On Tues, May 22nd, 13 parish visitors and guests toured Keystone Villa, a senior living facility in Blandon. All in attendance were impressed with the beautiful facilities and services that are provided for the residents. After the tour, refreshments were shared and there was a short meeting.

New Beginning's Mission House The Vidal/Coleman family continue to make progress towards their goals with many different folks helping with support services such as money managers, a case workers, tutoring, etc. The family is very appreciative all of this help. New Beginnings continues to make an impact on both the family and all of those involved.

Ghana Mission Update Pastor Pat and 4 other members of his family will be traveling to Ghana from Oct. 30th to Nov. 13th for the centennial celebration of Wegbe-Kpalime and the dedication of the kindergarten school which the Ghana Mission Trip of 2011 helped to support. Pastor Pat is looking toward early 2014 for the next congregation-wide mission trip.

2012 Patch for Blanket Sunday We received a thank you note and a badge for our contribution of $1,000 from our collection taken earlier this year for Church World Service's Blanket Plus Program. There is a banner in the narthex that shows this patch with 2012 on it. Many thanks to all of our members who so generously donated to this special offering that makes a difference to folks around the world.

Frozen Meals For quite a while, Helping Hands volunteers have been cooking and assembling individual meals which are kept at church and taken by Parish Visitors to their parish "friend" or used for Helping Hands needs. These meals are really appreciated by those who receive them. Carol Strause will be coordinating this ministry and will be calling Helping Hands volunteers who signed up for meal preparation on a rotating basis to help. If you feel that this is a ministry for you, please call Carol at (610-944-7786) to volunteer.

Here’s An UpdateOn Women’s Guild Happenings

The 2012 Rummage Sale Committee (consisting of Nancy Boyer, Mary Lou Knerr, Janice Lenhart, Pat Lenhart, and Carol Strause) would like to thank everyone that donated clothing and/or baked goods, or assisted in setting up, sorting, selling, and cleaning up after the sale. Profits from this year’s sale (clothing and bake sale combined) totaled $1,378.30. $1,000 of this profit will go into the church’s General Fund, (the remaining proceeds will stay in the Guild treasury for start-up funds for upcoming Guild activities, scholarships, etc.). Thirty-nine people (with qualifying vouchers acquired through Friend, Inc. and our local Fleetwood Food Bank) were able to shop free after the sale ended and before Deka Volunteers collected the leftover clothing as part of a fundraiser for a local boy, Austin (as part of his fundraiser for juvenile fibromatosis).

Consistory Notes for July 2012The Consistory held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, June 11, 2012. The highlights of that meeting were as follows:

The Property Committee reported that we have a bid of $5975 to complete the curbing project; it was agreed that money from the maintenance fund will be utilized to pay for this project.

The Property Committee also presented a revised bid for the sewer line project in the amount of $15,270; this will cover the cost of replacing approximately 200 feet of pipe from our driveway out to the street. The lower figure is based upon M & M Mechanical’s determination that we will not need to replace any asphalt as part of this project. The Consistory gave its approval to move ahead with this project as soon as possible.

The Consistory revisited the Finance Committee’s proposal for distribution of the bequest which we received from the estate of long-time member David (Davey) Moyer and voted to approve this plan as presented. More information regarding this matter is available in a separate article on page 10 of this newsletter.

As has become our tradition, the Consistory will not hold a regular meeting during the month of July. Our next meeting will take place on Monday, August 13, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the lounge off the narthex. As always, our meetings are open to the congregation, and we invite you to attend.

St. Paul’s Is Recipient of Generous Bequest

For those of us who have been members here for a very long time, the name Davy Moyer is a very familiar one. Davy was a long-term member of this congregation who could be seen singing with the senior choir every Sunday for many years and who was annually recognized for his perfect attendance in Sunday school for more consecutive years than almost anyone in our church.

A short while ago Davy passed away, and he is, of course, missed by all who knew him. However, recently we learned that Davy has left a very tangible reminder of his time with his church family in the form of a generous bequest to St. Paul’s. The actual amount of the bequest is $130,000, and the total amount was given to us with no designation as to how the money is to be used.

Because we want to remain faithful as a church community in a way that best honors Davy’s gift and that best reflects our gratitude to Davy, the Finance Committee and Pastor Pat met to discuss how we might best apportion the money. Following two very lengthy discussions accompanied by serious prayer, the committee presented the following recommendation to the Consistory for its approval:

Tithe 10% to Mission $13,000 Endowment Fund $30,000 Loan Principal $37,000 Capital Improvement Fund $50,000

After prayerful consideration, the Consistory voted to approve the Finance Committee’s plan for the distribution of the estate funds as stipulated above. It is the feeling of everyone involved in this decision-making process that this apportionment best honors Davy’s generosity to our church.

From June 18th through the 22nd, 59 children gathered along with 41 adult and youth leaders for a week full of singing, teaching, Bible stories, crafts, adventures with Chadder, recreation, and delicious meals. It was a really powerful week to say the least.

Each night started with a family dinner where we simply enjoyed each other’s company and broke bread in the social room. From there we spent some time with our teachers before coming together for our large group time full of amazing energy, singing, and fun skits. We were joined by Flashy Flo each day as we learned different ways to trust in God. Next, we split up by grade to spend time in crafts, Bible adventures, Chadder’s Theater, and some outdoor playtime. Each day ended with more time together as we sang, shared the different ways that we saw God throughout the day, and recapped the message of the day…which included…

Monday - No Matter Who you are…trust God based on Matthew 8:5-13

Tuesday - No Matter How you feel…trust God using the text of John 11

Wednesday - No Matter What People Do…trust God centering on Matthew 26:36-27:31

Thursday - No Matter What Happens…trust God which focused on Matthew 27:32-28:20

Friday - No Matter Where you are…trust God based on John 21:1-14
