WorksheetsWord pile – Expand your pupils’ vocabulary, 15 to 30 minutes

Different or the same? – Comparing and contrasting, 30 to 45 minutes

Ask your pupils to compare their own environment with that of Daeka in the 360° photo. What are the similarities and differences? You could give them cameras to take photos of their school or homes before attempting this worksheet. As an extension for KS3 pupils, you could ask your class to write up their answers into an essay.

Drought solutions – Discussion and decision making, 30 minutes to one hour

What can be done to prevent or lessen the impact of drought? Some solutions listed are real, some are not! Ask your pupils to discuss the solutions in groups or as a class, think of some of their own solutions and rank them.

Photo CaptionThis is the village of Taysa in Somaliland. The houses here are built with wooden frames in a bubble shape. People cover this frame with old clothes or with whatever material is available at the time.

Daeka sits inside her family’s home and stirs a pot of food. She still goes to school but often misses meals because of the drought.

The food which ActionAid provides to communities arrives on the back of big trucks.

Earth dams are piles of mud built in a circle. When rain falls, the water is collected inside of these dams. Stored in this way, water evaporates more slowly so that there is some left if there is a drought.

This ActionAid worker is counting the bags of food which will go to families who need it. ActionAid has given food to over 1,000 families since the drought began.

Two women collect water from a berkhad. Berkhads are big buildings which communities use to collect and store rainwater. ActionAid helps people to look after these buildings as they are an important source of water.

This dry and dusty land used to be a river. However the river dried upduring the drought.

This well was built to help the local community get fresh water from under the ground. ActionAid has helped local people build over 150 wells and water pumps in Somaliland since 2013.

Niama’s village now has a well built by ActionAid. This means she can grow vegetables like onions, cabbages, carrots, tomatoes and lettuce.
