Youth Alive Zambia-CAYA and Bread For The World

Youth Alive Mpika/CAYA-Bread for the world through the consultant provided technical

support out in the area of developing tool for monitoring and evaluation in the area of gender

activities in the life unlimited project since inception.

The Government –

As an organization we still continue enjoying cordial relations with ministries and other

stake-holders in the following areas:-

A. District commissioner (DC) is the overall person oversees the district on behalf of the

government. Some of the successful relation- ships have been in the area of blessing the

project implementers by giving a go ahead word to them so that activities can be happening

in the District. It is the office that needs to be aware of whatever things happening in the

district.

B. District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) under the ministry of Education

Heads district pertaining education since the majority of the target of the project beneficiaries

comes from the school, the office of the DEBS in the District helps by granting CAYA

permission to hold activities in schools.

C. Ministry of health/ we have been working directly with the district Hiv/AIDS, TB

and Malaria coordinator whose office has been helping the project in mobilising

participants from the health sector, granting permission to work with health institution in the

District where we have been working

D. Ministry of youth and sport

The youths have been the major target hence the ministry has been playing a key role in

mobilising youths especially for events like open for a and musical show even in the area of

giving information to visits that has been coming to monitor and evaluate the project.

E. District HIV/AIDS Task Force (DATF) is a consortium of all groups/organisations in

the district that deals with HIV/AIDS to the extent that on quarterly basis. It reports are sent

to DATF and sent to province and finally to the nation through NAC that feeds information in

the national statistics. Of which CAYA has been a member of the DATF at district lever and

the consortium has been able to bring all the stake-holder involved in dealing with HIV/AIDS

and Gender in the district

Others are Church leaders, community and village leaders, mpika community radio

grassroots soccer Nazareth catholic women group helping the facilitators in the areas

good practices of culture and traditions.

Some of the communities includes Mpika township,lwitikila,malambwa,sabwa,chibaye,chikakala,chalabesa,mpepo,mundu wa ntanga and chambeshi communites. We are linked to the network through Youth Alive Zambia as our leading working partner. We have been working in partnership for over 10year and have seen support funding coming from EU, Bread for the world, global fund and JFA because of this network. Through the support of youth alive Zambia, we have also received expert technical support from consultants from Bread for world thereby enhancing our capacity to deal with big projects such as the life unlimited project.

Key activities * We are involved in reproductive health programmes. This is an

intervention to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in youths and children. These programmes are done through workshops like Behavior Change process which is the main programme. It is a behavior change formation. This is targeted for youths between the ages of 15years to 24years.

We have the special programme for children for between the ages of 7years to 14 called adventure unlimited. This programme the to create a positive image for the child as there pass through a transition

We also have life skills. This is a programme designed to provide youths with skills to apply as they sustain the behavior formations adopted in the Behavior change process.

Gender programmes is one of the key programmes we offer. The programmes are offer through awareness activities through music and one day workshops. They are also one of the key issues as when we conduct open for meetings.

We also have workshops on child and psycho-social counseling which helps anumber of youth that face life’s challenges.

Results Working with governments *

What results have been achieved as a result of your work with government to implement the 28 targets of the SADC Gender Protocol? Do you sit on government delegations on regional and international platforms? Please give at least one example of the influence you have been able to exert in these structures? 200 words

Working with the government has helped us facilitate our programme in the targeted villages and communities. We were able to reach out to 10 communities and villages were we implemented various activities including gender awareness programmes in school with the permission from government through the DEB office. Mr .Lungu the head teacher at Kabale secondary school testified to say because of the project activities pupils` behaviour have been changed positively and there had been a reduction on school dropout due to early pregnancy which was positive to the school but also to the district. He testified this during an open for a event which we organised inviting the government officials under education, health personnel parents, teachers and over 300 youths. By engaging the Government we also seen that out efforts have bee recognised through reports sent to DATF and sent to province and finally to the nation through NAC that feeds information in the national statistics since we are the only youth organisation involved in district wide youth activities on gender and youths reproductive health.

Working with civil society *What strategies have you used to mobilise support amongst civil society to work on the 28 targets of the protocol? What have been the results. 200 words

Open fora has being one of the most effective and successful strategies to mobilizes support from civil society. the open for a is a platform were we invite stakeholders such as ministry of education, ministry of youth, ministry of health, traditional and community leadership, media, parents and community youth. Youths normally air out there views and concerns on a number of issues happening in the communities and the stakeholders respond to these issues. This has been effective because in the district this platform was organized for the first time by our organization to bridge the gap between the government civil society and the parent and youths. During one of the open for a, Lubamabala ward councilor Margret Chituli said she took interest in evaluating the impact CAYA programmes had made in the community and was gladdened to know the positive feedback from schools, event saw that her own son and daughters behaviors’ becoming positive since the time they joined CAYA. Through this strategy the Government was

able to grant CAYA a 100m x 100m land free to establish a youth centre.

Working with communities *What are the results of your engagement with communities on the SADC Gender Protocol? Please provide at least one example. 200 words

Cross cutting issues in Community to do with gender has been mainstreamed in such a way that a number of issues such as education and training gender based violence HIV/AIDS, governance and Reproductive Health have been addressed with the help of issues to do with culture and traditions where we talked through the workshops and musical shows the involvement of some parents and youths in programs like gender workshops and musical show where information on the importance of giving equal opportunities to boys and girls in-terms of education, services on reproductive health and adequate information are emphasised on. Parents have been involved in activities to do with gender to help reduce the element of forcing girls into early marriages and also the promotion of open dialogue between youths and parents.Mostly during workshops emphasis has been on the issue of having 50% and 50% in-

terms of difference between girls and boys in the area of participation. During workshops,

cross cutting issues such as Children’s rights and Gender equality have continued to be

incorporated in all the project activities.

Working with the media *How do you engage with the media to popularise the Protocol? 150 words

We are working with the community based radio station called Mpika radio through an interactive and education show in local language that involves our members discussing a number of topics including gender issues.

Almost on weekly basis Mpika local radio programmes for the period of 4 years now are done by the CAYA and DP coordinators and sometimes with some facilitator where a number of programs are being aired on Mpika community radio pertaining the challenges that youths of Mpika face together with how best they can overcome the challenges with the support and contribution that we receive from the European union and other stake holders. The producer of the programme is CAYA district coordinator Mr Clement Mumbo.

Over 1000 copies of the Life Unlimited Success Stories magazine were published after Mr Master Chimbala a MUVI TV presenter and producer visit of CAYA and did an interview with youths and stakeholders.

Lessons Learnt

The organization learnt from this action taken in the period under review that; The focus of the project to direct it to communities and churches is a very good idea

in terms of sustainability. It was easy to sustain change and monitor in churches as the

one can belong to a church from birth up to the old age compared to communities

were one can easily relocate

Gender activities for the communities and churches were planned in such a way that

they they took long and at times could not full benefits of the programmes due to the

fact that youths and children are difficult to maintain within the church or community

vicinity as compared to those coming from the school background. For the school if

anybody doesn’t attend the workshop he/she will have fear to be punished hence end

up attend the workshop without fail unlike in the church or communities where such

measures are not there. Our experience had been either today you have this number

and type of audience and tomorrow a different group of course with a low turn-up

Sustainability of support groups was very much feasible and if sports gala were incorporated in them just to make them busy all the time.

Taking the Project to rural communities where activities of that nature are not common has being good in attendance but we still had challenges in interpreting programmes material to our local language. Illiteracy is also one challenge we face especially in village

Open fora is the best practice and the easiest way of addressing issues affecting youths as it created a platform for youths to directly express themselves on the issues affecting them on gender and other topics with the Government and other stakeholders.

Training of facilitators in the targeted communities and churches is the best in-terms of sustainability

To be able to organise, manage and implement programs effectively, support groups were formed but no to the extent were facilities like football or net ball were involved. We hope to network with organization that will help us in this area and others like income generating activities for the sustainability of these groups.
