WELCOME TO KNOXKnox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all

ages, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic situations are included as equally valued participants in our congregational life. We cherish our diversity, offering a safe place of belonging to any who wish to

explore their beliefs in an atmosphere promoting discussion, the development of healthy relationships and spiritual growth. We strive to be open to dialogue and shared experiences with people of other faiths. We enjoy worshipping the God made known in Jesus, endeavouring to do so in ways that are relevant to our daily lives, respect the integrity of creation, and make a positive difference

to our wider world.

A loop system for hearing aids operates at Knox.

Toilets are available through the door on the lectern side of the sanctuary.

The Call to Worship:We light a candle in the name of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world.

JESUS, A SMALL FIGURE BEFORE THE EMPIRE’S MIGHT;JESUS, WHO SPOKE OF ANOTHER KINGDOM;JESUS, OUR HOPE FOR PEACE IN THE WORLD.

Kia noho a Ihowa ki a koutou. God be with you.MA IHOWA KOE E MANAAKI. GOD BLESS YOU.

Hymn:Hanover probably William Croft (1678-1727)

1. The kingdom of God is justice and joy;for Jesus restores what sin would destroy.God’s power and glory in Jesus we know;and here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow.

2. The kingdom of God is mercy and grace;the captives are freed, and all people find place, the outcast is welcomed, God’s banquet to share;and hope is awakened in place of despair.

3. The kingdom of God is challenge and choice:believe the good news, repent and rejoice! His love for his people, brought Christ to his cross:our crisis of judgment for gain or for loss.

4. God’s kingdom is come, the gift and the goal;in Jesus begun, in heaven made whole. The heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call;and all things cry “Glory!” to God all in all.

Bryn Austin Rees (1911-1983)

Prayer of ApproachThe kingdom of God . . .a tiny mustard seed we believe will grow,a light placed on a stand, that all may see,a treasure hidden in a field, we’re given grace to find:FOR THAT KINGDOM, THANKS BE TO GOD.

The kingdom of God . . .a determination to set captives free,a promise that peace will come upon the world,a vision of swords beaten into pruning forks:FOR THAT KINGDOM, THANKS BE TO GOD.

The kingdom of God . . .a new community gathered around a Galilean preacher, people forgiving and being forgiven,a ground-swell of people’s hope awakening:FOR THAT KINGDOM, THANKS BE TO GOD.

The kingdom of God . . .a man without no guns in his hands,

Page 4:   · Web viewKnox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all ages, sexual orientations,

facing off a dictator, questioning the world’s assumptionthat might is right:FOR THAT KINGDOM, THANKS BE TO GOD.

The kingdom of God . . .someone living for others, someone dying on a cross,a Friday death waiting to be answered by a Sunday miracle:FOR THAT KINGDOM, THANKS BE TO GOD.

Repeated in our time, O God:the innocent person subjected to condemnation, the crucifixions, the swords and spears hurled in warring spirit, the cycles of bombing and killing. So we say

. . . Lord have mercy.CHRIST HAVE MERCY.Lord have mercy.

Assurance and Response. . . In the name of Christ I say to you:

You are forgiven and you are free.THANKS BE TO GOD.

Prayer of Supplication:

Jesus from Nazareth, your identity confuses the violent, and you are feared by those who need to be in control;YOUR KINGDOM IS NOT FROM THIS WORLD.

Give us grace to take our place within your kingdom,TO SPURN THE WAYS OF VIOLENCE,TO LIVE WITH REDEEMING GRACE,AND TO ENSHRINE IN OUR COMMUNITYTHE VICTORY OF LIFE.

We pray this in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray, saying:

. . . OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN

Gospel Lesson: John 18: 33-37

This is the gospel of Christ.PRAISE TO CHRIST THE WORD.

Hymn:Irish From Collection of Hymns and Sacred Poems, Dublin, 1749

1. Our Lord, you stood in Pilate’s hall, his judgment to endure.Yet all he ruled would one day fall;you reign forevermore!

2. You are our King and yet you saidit’s not by sword or might;where truth is lived and love is spread, your reign comes into sight.

3. Where people live in deep despair, forgotten, hurt, alone,we hear their urgent, whispered prayer:“when will your reign be known?”

4. And where your Christian church todayis mighty, rich and strong,Lord, may we not forget your Way,nor lose your kingdom’s song.

5. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done”not just in heaven above;May we on earth obey your Son,who reigns o’er all in love.

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette (b. 1961)

Music for Reflection

Hymn:Martyrdom Hugh Wilson (1766-1824)

1. The reign of God, like farmer’s field, bears weeds along with wheat;the good and bad are intertwinedtill harvest is complete.

2. Like mustard tree, the reign of Godfrom tiny seed will spread, till birds of every feather cometo nest, and there be fed.

3. Though hidden now, the reign of Godmay, yet unnoticed, grow;from deep within it rises up,like yeast in swelling dough.

4. The reign of God is come in Christ;the reign of God is near.Ablaze among us, kindling hearts, the reign of God is here!

Delores Dufner (b. 1939)

1. Christ is the world’s true light, the source of its salvation, the day-star clear and brightfor each and every nation;new life, new hope awakeswhere people own his sway:freedom her bondage breaks, and night is turned to day.

2. In Christ all peoples meet, their ancient feuds forgetting, the whole round world complete, from sunrise to its setting:when Christ is throned as Lord,we shall forsake our fear,to ploughshare beat the sword,to pruning-hook the spear.

3. One Lord, in one great nameunite us all who own you;cast out our pride and shamethat hinder to enthrone you;the world has waited long, has travailed long in pain;come, heal its ancient wrong, come, Prince of Peace, and reign!
